Apache Indian was born as Steven Kapur, on 11th May 1967 in Birmingham, UK. He is probably the world's only Anglo-Indian dancehall reggae artist!
The journey from DJ to recording artist: By the time Apache reached his teens he had started working with local sound systems and grew dreadlocks! Soon after, in the mid 1980s he trimmed his hair and created some respect for himself as a dancehall DJ. His first single Move Over India came out in 1990. Considering that he is a Punjabi, the single mixed reggae with bhangra. Needless to say it was loved by people who like either genre.
Very soon he brought out two more singles: Chok There and Don Raja. Looking at the quality of his music and popularity to boot, Island Records signed him up, and he released his first album in 1993 titled No Reservations. This album introduced a new genre of music to the world: Bhangra Ragamuffin/ Bhangramuffin.
His other albums are: • Make Way for the Indian (1995). It featured the hit “Boom Shack A Lak”. • Real People/Wild East (1997) • Karma (2000) • Time for Change (2005) • Sadhu (2007)
He has recorded with world famous artists like Boyz II Men, Blackstreet, Wreckx n Effect, UB40, Sean Paul, Maxi Priest, General Levy, Brian and Tony Gold, Shaggy, Yami Bolo, Boy George, A R Rehman, Sameera Singh, Asha Bhosle, Malkit Singh, Dalwinder Singh, Kaptain Laadi, Jazzy B and Aman Hayer.
Connection with movies: In 1997 he sang for the Tamil film Love Birds, and even appeared in a song with Prabhu Deva. In 2008 he sang “Mujh Pe To Jadoo” with Taz and Sunidhi Chauhan for the Bollywood film Race.
