Beautiful and not one to mince her words, Neena Gupta speaks her mind and lives life her own way. This has carried over into her work as an actress as she essays roles that are strong and individualistic, addressing social issues.
Basics on Neena
Neena Gupta was born on the 4th July 1959. Her father was R.N.Gupta. She was a student of the National School of Drama, New Delhi.
Gupta made news over her relationship with West Indian cricketer Vivian Richards with whom she had a daughter Masaba. She was also rumoured to be involved with Alok Nath and Sharang Dev.
In 2008, Neena Gupta married Vivek Mehra in a low key wedding ceremony.
Neena Gupta’s Work
In a career spanning more than two decades, Neena Gupta has carved a niche for herself. She has worked in television, non commercial Indian movies as well as international movies.
Television
In the 80s, Neena Gupta was seen in Khandaan (1985) and Bharat Ek Khoj (1988). In the early 90s, she acted in Dard (1994) and Gumraah (1995) which were aired on DD Metro.
Star TV’s Saans (1999) was a popular serial in which she played the role of a woman whose husband gets involved in an extra marital affair with a younger colleague. She directed the serial as well.
She has also worked in Chitthi (2003), Saat Phere (2005) and Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin. She hosted the show Kamzor Khadii Kaun, which was an Indian version of The Weakest Link.
Movies
Among the movies Neena Gupta has acted in, those which stand out are Shyam Benegal’s Mandi (1983) with Shabana Azmi and Smita Patil. The same year she was seen in the comedy Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983) by Kundan Shah.
Another Shyam Benegal movie Trikaal (1985), about a Goan family, saw her as Milagrenia. Girish Karnad’s Utsav (1984) was based on a Sanskrit play and starred Shashi Kapoor and Rekha.
In the National Award winner Suraj Ka Satvan Ghoda (1992), she played Satti one of the three women around whom the story revolved. She featured in the controversial song Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai with Madhuri Dixit in Khalnayak (1993).
