The leggy and bronzed Padma Lakshmi is a model, actress and foodie who has written cookbooks and hosted several shows.
Padma Lakshmi Unzipped
Padma Parvati Lakshmi was born on 1st September 1970 in Kerala. Her family later relocated to the United States. Her father worked for Pfizer while her mother Vijaya was a nurse who dealt with suicide prevention. Her parents divorced in the early 70s.
She completed her schooling at the William Workman High School in California. She graduated in Theater Arts from the Clark University, Massachusetts.
Crash Boom Bang
Padma Lakshmi was fourteen years old when she met with a fatal accident. She has a seven inch scar on her right arm as a reminder which she often flaunts in photo shoots.
Lady Rushdie
Padma Lakshmi was introduced to Salman Rushdie by Tina Brown. The couple tied the knot on April 17th 2004 in New York. She was also his muse as characters in novels like Fury were inspired by her. Soon after Rushdie was conferred the knighthood, the couple filed for divorce.
Tangy Tart Hot Sweet
Padma Lakshmi’s love for cuisine prompted her to host shows like Top Chef (2006 to 2008), Padma’s Passport and Planet Food.
She wrote her first cookbook Easy Exotic and won the Best First Book in 1999 at the World Cookbook Awards at Versailles. She came out with her second book in 2007 and it was titled Tangy, Tart, Hot and Sweet.
Model
Discovered by an agent in Spain, Padma Lakshmi started modeling when she was twenty years old. She was seen on the catwalks of all the fashion capitals like Paris, Milan and New York and has worn designs by Emanuel Ungaro, Ralph Lauren and Alberta Ferreti.
She has also appeared in campaigns for Roberto Cavalli and has been photographed frequently by Helmut Newton.
She has been splashed on the fashion spreads and covers of magazines like Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, Harper’s Bazaar and L’Officiel India. Allure captured her in the buff on their May 2009 edition.
Television
She was featured in a documentary on fashion called Unzipped in 1995.
She landed roles in many Italian television series like Linda e il brigadiere, Il Figlio di Sandokan and Caraibi as well as the American show Star Trek Enterprise. She was seen as Princess Bithia in The Ten Commandments (2006).
Movies
Padma Lakshmi stepped into cinema as Sylk in Glitter (2001) with Mariah Carey. The movie was a flop. Her next movie was Kaizad Gustad’s Boom (2003) which also starred Katrina Kaif and Madhu Sapre. The movie again had no takers.
In 2005 she was seen in Paul Mayeda Berges’The Mistress of Spices as Anupam Kher’s grand daughter Geeta.
Her next movie is Deepa Mehta’s Kamagata Maru (2009) about immigrants in Canada. The movie also stars Akshay Kumar.
