Prakash Jha, a National Award winning Indian director is known for making movies that highlight the social and political situation.
Basics on Prakash Jha Prakash Jha was born on 27th February 1952 in West Champaran in the state of Bihar, India. He studied at the Sainik School Tilaya which is now part of Jharkhand. He headed to Delhi to study Physics at Ramjas College. His interest in Physics lasted for a year until a creative itch prompted him to join the J.J. School of Arts to become a painter. He got sidetracked when he saw the shoot for Dharma and joined the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune to study editing.
He was married to actress Deepti Naval who acted in his award winning movie Damul and Hip Hip Hurray. They later divorced.
After making several documentaries and movies, Prakash Jha also set up the Prakash Jha Productions.
Movies apart, Jha is also behind Anubhooti that offers training in film-making and Samvedan which supports small and micro industries.
Documentaries Some of Prakash Jha’s well known, hard hitting documentaries are Under The Blue (1975) and Faces After Storm (1984). The latter won him his first National Film Award for Best Non Feature Film.
Prakash Jha’s Movies Hip Hip Hurray (1984) captured the nostalgia of college days. Damul (1985) which starred Deepti Naval and Annu Kapoor brought to light genocide, bonded labour and feudal oppression. The movie won the Golden Lotus Award for Best Film and the Filmfare Best Film Critics Award.
Parinati (1989) which was shot in Bikaner, Rajasthan was based on a story penned by Vijaydan Detha. While Bandish (1996) was inspired by Dicken’s Tale of Two Cities, Mrityudand with Shabana Azmi and Madhuri Dixit saw him go back to Bihar to show the discrimination against women.
Dil Kya Kare (1999) was a commercial venture that weaved a story around characters essayed by Mahima Choudhry, Ajay Devgan and Kajol. He worked with Ajay Devgan again in Gangaajal (2003) about politics and the police force. It won the National Film Award for Best Film on Other Social Issues. Apaharan (2005) which he wrote and directed, brought together Ajay Devgan and Nana Patekar as the father and son duo in Bihar. It won the National Film Award for Best Screenplay and Filmfare Best Dialogue Award.
The Katrina Kaif and Ajay Devgan starrer Rajiniti is a contemporary version of Mahabharata with a political backdrop and is due to release in 2009.
