Personal Life:
Raj Babbar, a Punjabi, is a product of the National School of Drama. He was born on 23rd June, 1952 in Agra. He married Nadira Zaheer, daughter of his Professor at NSD. He has 2 children from her: Arya Babbar (actor/journalist) and Juhi Babbar (actor).
His second marriage was to Smita Patil, the renowned Bollywood actor. She died while giving birth to their son Prateek Babbar. Prateek was last seen in Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na (2008), in a small but widely acclaimed role.
Film career:
Some of Raj Babbar’s better known Bollywood films are listed here:
• His first film was with Reena Roy. Titled Sau Din Saas Ke (1980), the movie revolved around a tyrannical mother-in-law played by Lalita Pawar. Raj played her son.
• Insaf Ka Tarazu (1980) showed him in a negative role, that of a rapist. The film was shrouded in controversy, which is why it perhaps did well commercially. That being said, all the actors gave excellent performances and the film was indeed well made. It won several awards.
• In B R Chopra’s Nikaah (1982) he played a newspaper editor, and romanced Salma Agha. The film was a hit, and so was the music.
• He played a Professor in Aaj KI Awaz (1984) whose sister was raped and mother murdered. The story is about how he avenges their deaths.
• In 1985 he acted in a Ramanand Sagar film with Salma Agha, titled Salma.
• He played a cop in Angaarey (1986).
• Raj essayed the role of Raja in Andhaa Yudh (1987).
• He played Hema Malini’s brother and Moushumi Chatterjee’s love interest in Vijay (1988).
• In Ghayal (1990) he was Sunny Deol’s older brother who gets murdered.
• Rudaali (1993), the tear jerker saw him play Thakur Lakshman Singh, in love with Dimple Kapadia.
• Raj was seen in the 1993 film Gardish, along with Jackie Shroff, Dimple Kapadia, Shammi Kapoor and Amrish Puri.
• He played a negative role in Barsaat (1995). As Twinkle Khanna’s dad, he played the evil father, who tries to get her lover into trouble.
• In the mystery film Gupt (1997), Raj plays Bobby Deol’s father. He had a very small role in the movie.
• Rajkumar Santoshi’s The Legend of Bhagat Singh (2002) saw him play Kishan Singh, Ajay Devgn’s dad.
• In Bunty Aur Babli (2005) he played father to another star kid, Abhishek Bachchan.
• Corporate (2006), was Madhur Bhandarkar’s film based on what goes on in the corporate world. Raj plays an entrepreneur in it.
• As Priyanka Chopra’s dad in Fashion (2008), he is at first shown as strict and rigid, but towards the end becomes his daughter’s biggest strength.
Considering that Raj Babbar is a Punjabi, he has worked in Punjabi films as well. Films like Chan Pardesi, Aasra Pyar Da (1983), Marhi da Diva (1989), Mahaul Theek Hai (1999), Shaheed Uddham Singh (2000),Yaaran Naal Bahaaran (2005) and Ek Jind Ek Jaan (2006).
Political Career:
Raj Babbar joined the Samajwadi Party and became an MP thrice. However he had a fallout with Arjun Singh due to difference in ideologies, and as a result was suspended from the party. Subsequently he joined the Congress.
Unknown stuff:
Apparently Raj Babbar doesn’t for the Punjabi films he works in, as an act of generosity to Punjabi cinema.
It is said that the both times he married was out of selfish interests rather than love.
He has patched up with his first wife, Nadira Zaheer, though Prateek still stays with Smita Patil’s parents.
