Sanjay Leela Bhansali Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s movies are typified by a strong dose of emotions and opulence.

Basics on Sanjay
Sanjay Leela Bhansali was born on 24th February 1963. His middle name is his mother’s and he uses it in recognition of all that she means to him. He graduated from the Film and Television Institute of India.

He assisted Vidhu Vinod Chopra on the sets of movies like Kareeb, Parinda and 1942: A Love Story. He chose to go his own way and made his directorial debut with Khamoshi: The Musical (1996). 

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Movies
1996  Bhansali wrote and directed Khamoshi: The Musical about a young girl born to deaf mute parents. The critics loved the movie while it was a moderate success at the box office. The movie had Manisha Koirala and Salman Khan together in the lead while Nana Patekar and Seema Biswas played the deaf mute parents. It won the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Movie.

1999  Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam was a love story that takes unexpected turns and the main characters were played by Salman Khan, Ajay Devgan and Aishwarya Rai. The sets were lavish and passions running high. It won the Filmfare Best Movie Award and the Filmfare Best Director Award.

2002  Bhansali reworked Devdas with Shah Rukh Khan in the lead, Aishwarya Rai as Paro and brought in Madhuri Dixit as Chandramukhi. It was another extravagant and breath taking project. He won yet another Filmfare Best Movie Award and the Filmfare Best Director Award along with the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. It was India’s official entry to the Oscar Awards.

2005  The riotous colour of his previous movies made way to Black which was based on Helen Keller’s life. It showed the life of a deaf mute girl who makes it despite all odds with the help of a man who later succumbs to Alzheimer’s disease. Rani Mukherji and Amitabh Bacchan both won accolades for their performance. The movie won the National Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi as well as the Filmfare Best Movie Award and Filmfare Best Director Award. It was listed among Times 10 Best Movies of the Year 2005. 

2007  Saawariya which was the debut for star kids Sonam Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor failed. It received the thumbs down from critics and the movie-goers.

Next  Bhansali is working on Guzarish with Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai. Chenab Gandhi, on the other hand, will be directed by Vibhu Puri and stars Amitabh Bacchan, Harman Baweja and Vidya Balan. It is inspired by the life of Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan, a freedom fighter.
