Vidhu Vinod Chopra Vidhu Vinod Chopra is a Bollywood director, producer and writer who has got it right, delivering critical hits without losing out on the commercial side. Big stars and strong stories have helped him create his own brand of movies.

Basics on Vidhu Vinod Chopra
Vidhu Vinod Chopra was born on 5th September 1956 in Srinagar, Kashmir, India. He studied at the reputed Film and Television Institute of India, Pune, India.

He is married to Anupama Chopra, a writer.

Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Movies
Vidhu Vinod Chopra has been on the winning track since he started making short films as a student. He won the National Film Award for the Best Short Experimental Film for Murder at Monkey Hill (1977). His documentary An Encounter with Faces (1978) about impoverished children won acclaim and was nominated for the Academy Awards in 1979 under the non-fiction category.

Sazaye Maut (1981) was his first full length movie. He played a small part in Kundan Shah’s Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983). Parinda (1989) which highlighted realism in Indian cinema won him the Filmfare Best Director Award.

In 1942: A Love Story (1993) he captured a love story in the 40s with Manisha Koirala and Anil Kapoor playing the lead roles. Mission Kashmir (2000) about terrorism was an average success.

Chopra gave Gandhism a new spin with Munnabhai M.B.B.S (2003) starring Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi and directed by Rajkumar Hirani. He produced Parineeta (2005), a period film based on a novella by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay.

In 2006 the sequel Lage Raho Munnabhai was a favourite among movie goers. He came back to directing movies with Eklavya: The Royal Guard (2007).

His company Vinod Chopra Productions are producing 3 Idiots starring Aamir Khan and Madhavan. The movie is due to release at the end of 2009. Plans are also underway to produce Munnabhai Chale Amerika.
