Priyamani is one of the most talented actresses in the south today.Although she started her career with a series of flops, she rose to stardom with her acting prowess, with about 40 films and a handful of awards to her credit.The gifted starlet celebrates her birthday, and we take you on a pictorial tour of her life and career.Click on!
Priyamani was brought up and educated in Bangalore. She attended the Bishop’s Cotton Women’s Christian College in Bangalore, for a degree in Psychology.
Soon, she was noticed by various filmmakers, and started getting offers to star in films. In 2003, she made her acting debut through a Telugu movie Evare Atagaadu, which failed at the box office.
Her Tamil debut, Kangalal Kaidhu Sei, which released in 2004, also sank at the box office. Same year, she acted in a Malayalam film Satyam opposite Prithviraj which also did not do well.
Her portrayal of ‘Thulasi’ in the 2005 film Adhu Oru Kanaa Kaalam garnered a lot of critical acclaim. However, this film also was a flop, and box office success continued to elude her.
In 2006, Priyamani got her first box office hit through Pellaina Kothalo, a low budget Telugu movie which cast her opposite Jagapathi Babu. The film earned her the much needed break in Tollywood.
The biggest break in Priyamani’s career came in 2007, when she acted in Ameer Sulthan’s Paruthiveeran opposite Karthi Sivakumar, which turned out to be a blockbuster. Her portrayal of ‘Muthazhagu’ earned her a lot of critical acclaim, and she won the year’s National Award for the Best Actress, South Filmfare Award and Tamil Nadu State Film Award.
She won the Filmfare Best Malayalam actress award for her performance in Thirakkatha (2008), which was based on the real life story of late actress Srividya.
In 2009, she acted in two Tamil films, Arumugam opposite Bharath, and Ninaithale Inikkum, which was a remake of the Malayalam blockbuster Classmates, in which she was paired opposite Prithviraj for the third time.
. In 2010, she played a Mumbai based interior designer in the Mammootty starrer Malayalam blockbuster Pranchiettan & the Saint, which was the longest running Malayalam movie since 2005. Priyamani won a Filmfare nomination for the role that year.
She also played the supporting role in Maniratnam’s bilingual Raavanan (Raavan in Hindi). She was nominated for the Apsara Award for the Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the Hindi version.
Acclaimed director Ram Gopal Varma, who was impressed by her performance in Paruthiveeran, cast her in his trilingual big budget film Rakhtacharitra II, in which she played the role of Suriya’s wife.
