Telugu cinema saw the release of some of its biggest films this year, both in terms of budget as well as box office collections. While superstars like Pawan Kalyan, Nagarjuna, Mahesh Babu and Venkatesh continued to rule the box office, relatively younger stars like Ram Charan Teja, Allu Arjun, Rana Daggubati and Nani also made a mark with their respective hits.
We bring you our list of top ten hits from Tollywood this year (in order of release).
Businessman Puri Jagannath’s Businessman starring Mahesh Babu and Kajal Agarwal in the lead roles, was one of the earliest releases of the year. The action thriller produced by R R Venkat was released in about 2000 screens worldwide, and had the largest opening for a Telugu movie till date. The film went on to be a blockbuster, completing 100 days in some centres.
Bodyguard Bodyguard, starring Venkatesh and Trisha Krishnan in lead roles, was the remake of 2010 superhit Malayalam film of the same name. Directed by Gopichand Malineni and produced by Bellamkonda Suresh, the movie was a great success at the box office despite tight competition from Mahesh Babu’s Businessman.
Ee Rojullo Ee Rojullo, directed by Maruthi and starring Srinivas and Reshma, was the surprise hit of the year. Made on a low budget by a group of producers credited as “Good Friends”, the film was both a critical and commercial success, and had a long run of 175 days.
Racha Racha was young star Ram Charan Teja’s comeback film, after the poor show of Orange in 2010. The movie, written and directed by Sampath Nandi, had Tamannaah Bhatia playing the female lead opposite Charan. Produced by R B Choudhary, the movie was very successful at the BO, and completed its 100 days run.
Gabbar Singh Gabbar Singh, starring Pawan Kalyan and Shruti Haasan in the lead roles, is the remake of Salman Khan’s 2010 Hindi blockbuster Dabangg. Directed by Harish Shankar and produced by Bandla Ganesh, it is the all time highest grossing film in Telugu, with a gross collection of more than 150 crores.
Eega Ace director Rajamouli continued his success streak with Eega, a romantic graphical entertainer about a man reborn as a fly to protect his lady love. Nani, Samantha and Sudeep played the main roles in the film. Although it did not have a big star cast to boast of, with its interesting story and superior graphics, the movie was a great success at the BO, grossing more than 125 crores.
Julayi Allu Arjun’s sole release this year, Julayi directed by Trivikram Srinivas had Ileana Dcruz playing Arjun’s heroine. The movie, produced by S Radha Krishna and DVV Danayya had a good run at the BO, having collected more than 40 crores gross. The Malayalam dubbed version Gajapokkiri also garnered fairly good response.
Cameraman Ganga Tho Rambabu Powerstar Pawan Kalyan’s second release of the year, Cameraman Ganga Tho Rambabu, directed by Puri Jagannath, had Tamannaah as the female lead. The film proved to be a winner at the BO, providing both the hero and the director, their second hit of the year.
Damarukam Damarukam, a socio-fantasy written and directed by Srinivasa Reddy, is Nagarjuna’s most expensive film till date, and has Anushka Shetty playing the heroine. The film, which was released in 1400 screens worldwide, had the largest ever opening in Nagarjuna’s career. The film has emerged as a success at the BO, and is still continuing its great run.
Krishnam Vande Jagadgurum Rana Daggubati has finally scored a winner with Krishnam Vande Jagadgurum, his latest release. The movie, which also marks the comeback of actress Nayanthara, is directed by Krish. The film has emerged as a critical and commercial success, and continues its good run at the box office.
