KFCC to pay a penalty!
The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has asked the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC), among other local organisations to pay a penalty of 17 lakhs. This fine was levied on them for not approving to release other language films in maximum number of theatres.
Reliance Entertainment had filed a petition against KFCC in 2010, when KFCC had objected to release Hrithik Roshan starrer Kites in more than 25 theatres state wide. It’s a self-imposed rule in Karnataka, as they believe that releasing them in more number of theatres may affect Kannada films. Though Reliance Entertainment agreed to release the movie in a minimum number of theatres, it filed a petition against KFCC when it objected for the second time during the release of Ravan.
The CCI took up similar petitions filed by various distributors. The judgement was given on Sunday, which states that there must be no discrimination between regional and non-regional films. The CCI has also charged a penalty of 10 per cent of the average of KFCC’s three year’s receipts or income.
KFCC which was left with no other choice has decided to question the CCI’s order in the High Court of Karnataka.
