Amala was one of the most sought-after heroines throughout the eighties and till the early nineties and starred opposite all the leading heroes in Tamil films including superstar Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Vijaykanth, Sathyaraj and Prabhu. She was considered as a lucky mascot by many producers and directors and played the lead role in Bharathiraja’s Vedham Pudidhu.
At the height of her stardom as heroine, she married Telugu star Nagarjuna in 1992 and has stayed away from films ever since. She settled smoothly in matrimonial life and aligned herself in a big way with PETA (People for Ethnic Treatment of Animals) and has been advocating animal rights.
She now makes a comeback to films and has singed up a Telugu film titled Life Is Beautiful directed by popular Tollywood director Sekar Kammula. She plays a mother’s role, obviously, but looks young enough to appear as the elder sister of most of today’s heroines. Gifted with an hour-glass figure thanks to her mixed parentage, Amala has always flaunted a flawless skin.
Talking about her re-entry in films, she says “I had been busy all these years bringing up my son Akhil and indulging in other socially relevant causes. Now that Akhil has become a grown-up boy and I don’t need to baby-sit, I have decided to try a ‘comeback’ in films. I haven’t decided as to whether I should continue to do more films in future.”
