Released in the mid-nineties, superstar Rajinikanth’s Baasha remains one of the most likeable films in his career besides remaining his biggest hit for a long time till Chandramukhi (2005) rewrote the box office history. Shankar’s Sivaji: The Boss (2007) and Enthiran: The Robot broke many box office records held by Baasha (1995). Till today, the film has inspired many gangster movies made in Kollywood but none could touch the dizzying heights of the success of Baasha.
Rajini had Nagma as his heroine in this film with Raghuvaran playing his villain. The film had Sathyapriya, Kitty, Vijayakumar, Devan and Alphonsa playing major roles. Set to score by Devaa, the film’s songs were super-duper hits. The title song is still considered by many as the best ever opening song in Rajinikanth’s illustrious career.
Even now, after more than 15 years it was made, the film makes heads turn. Whenever the film is broadcast on a Tamil satellite television channel, the ticket sales in the theatres would invariably record a considerable drop as people would sit in their homes glued to their television screens watching the film. The film, which has been dubbed in Hindi, would soon hit the screens nationwide in a digital format with the same title.
Slated to release by end April, the film would have Rajini and Nagma getting voices from Mumbai based Gautham and Sushma. Gopal Ram has penned the dialogues for the Hindi version while Suresh Krishna has directed it. It remains to be seen whether the film courts the same success in Hindi as it managed in the original Tamil version.
