A candid conversation with Ram Gopal Varma
Ram Gopal Varma needs no introduction. After directing more than 25 films and producing about 35 films, he is now considered as one of the greatest filmmakers in India. His recently released film Phoonk has registered a good opening at the box-office. In an exclusive chat with filmnirvana, RGV talks about his films, future projects and his musés: You took a long break from the horror genre and made a series of films on underworld. Now you have again switched back to horror moviess. What made you take up Phoonk? First of all, I didn?t make a series of films on underworld. I have tried many things, Rangeela was a musical, Kaun a suspense killer and a political drama like Sarkar. I think the hard hitting nature of a horror film appeals to people. We can make hundred films on the same genre, like Karan Johar can make 50 films on love story and family drama and why shouldn?t he? It is one important emotion and targets a lot many people. In my case, if Bhoot is about demonic possessions, Phoonk is about black magic. Both are different films of the same genre. But both of them serve a common purpose ? to generate fear. However, thats's not all. The important thing is its story and characters which make it believable. You have also conducted a contest wherein people are dared to watch the film all alone in a theatre. The winner gets Rs.5 lakhs. What is this all about? Is it just a publicity stunt? read more of this interview on www.filmnirvana.com
