I agree ... Lagaan is totally a different League

Both are different .....Lagaan is not about the game but symbolises a STRUGGLE.....whereas Chak De talks about the GAME

Lagaan is a different movie chakde falls in other category but i think lagaan is much better than chak de india

they both r really good movies, but lagaan has no competetion :-) Lagaan is my vote

Lagan: I am confused what this movie was a freedom struggle movie, a sports movie an inspirational movie or just a timepass movie? Although i loved this movie but would not like to watch it 3rd or 4th time.(2 times I have already watched it) Because it is not realistic i cannot relate to it at all.

Chak De: This is a true sports movie, watched it twice and would like to watch it again. This movie inspired me to watch India-Korea hockey match yesterday. Although this movie did not have a complicated plot with skewed charachters but it had the spirit of the game in it which I really loved.

For all those who love Lagan my question is what makes you love lagan apart from its entertainment value which gets lost after you watch it twice. 

here is my take

* chak de's focus was on 4 out of 11 players, so it disguised itself as 4+1 representing the 11...  lagaan had much better focus on all the members

* chak de's touching of social issues was supeficial - more for entertainment than actual concern or any wish to change (they showed how north east folks are neglected but in the team itself the focus was not on any of them, they showed that a girl from rural area might not know english but that *very thing* was to generate some laughs, hoo!), lagaan was much more genuine in that respect

* chak de has its own cliches - komal giving the ball to preeti at the end with an idiotic dialogue, and preeti giving the favor back in form of penalty, or the guy who was shown with preeti was insensitive and rude to start with making the choice for preeti much easier... 

* incidentally i took my team out for this movie and one of them has played hockey in inter IITs, i asked him about the technicality of the stuff shown in the movie, he said it was pretty much okay, nothing great, i believe that the movie was more about team spirit and a man's fight to get back his dignity than a sports movie... i wont say lagaan was a sports movie either so none of them scores over here...

* chak de has a feel good factor when india wins the world cup and all... i think desis like their teams to win even if that is on-screen :-)...

* chak de's ability to connect to youth is much more, primary reason being that it has a certain *cool/ young* look... though it does not mean it will inspire youth to do anything, just that it has better entertainment value for a youngster... (for that matter i dont think lagaan inspired ppl to do anything but chak de's the much better connection with youth lets them become animated for sure)... i think it took an RDB for people to go and stage a dharna at india gate...

* yashraj films know their game plan very well, they are going to cash on quite some moolah from this movie :-)... 

If there was a guy's team instead of the girls in the movie, the response wouldnt have been the same, a lot of people are going to watch the glamorous Segarika Ghatge / Vidya Malvade ...

I like the movie but then too wont rate it above Lagaan

as dinrat said about the social issues, atleast the SC / ST social issue was captured very well in Lagaan, I am convinced on this point. 

As far as the hockey matchgoes... there was not much stress on the game or the technicality I guess it was always about 4 girls and the rest of the team.....

interesting piece of gossip, apparently the chak de girls have left all the team-spirit they advocated on screen and a cat fight is on between them... in the movie the focus was only on 4 out of 11, and now only sagarika (preeti) and vidya are cashing on the success... others including komal say that they were not helped/ guided sufficiently, sagarika comes from a rich family so she has hired a PR person, vidya was already a known face... they are getting sidelined and focus is on only some of them etc etc... i read this in sunday's edition of HT-brunch and definitely made for a masaledaar read :-)...

Finally back to square one, so now everybody is convinced that such team spirit can only be shown "on screen" ;-)

incidentally the same article had comments from two of lagaan-11 also, bagha and kachra... they were still better and they mentioned that even now they do play together for causes... lagaan was much more balanced in focus on all players...

Both were great. But in Lagaan I failed to understand how some ameteure villagers beat prfessional crickets. This was very much filmy.
