Well i dont think that hit and flop can be a measure of best and worst, no doubt Laxmikant Pyarelal was a great director, but you cant compare the two....

If Hits / Flops would have been a criteria then Guru Dutt would never come in the list of great Directors, still I feel that when it comes to veriety in music RD Burman was the uncrowned king.

see his compositions in movies: 1942 a love story, Sholay,  aandhi etc!

Re: R.D .BURMAN VERSUS LAXMIKANT-PYA RELAL

Laxmikant-Pyarelal have given more hits than any other music directors in the Hindi Film Music...LP's consistancy was amazing. It is doubtful that any Hinid Film Music directors have composed so many hits and that too so consistantly, for the period of 37 years...It is ONLY Laxmikant-Pyarelal have done it...

Undoubtedly Laxmikant-Pyarelal have an edge over RD Burman....

We considered lucky to witness the LP and RD era.

I again repeat, hits and flops cannot be a calibrating ground.

ijazat as a film is a flop, but u see its a masterpiece, kagaz ke phool was a flop, but its an amazing movie.

Sorry u ppl just cant convince a die Hard RD fan, but on the other hand I respect LP as well they were great composers, I am not going to the extent of saying that LP was better or RD was better, but I prefer RD anyday, its more of personal choice and taste you see...

Re: R.D .BURMAN VERSUS LAXMIKANT-PYA RELAL

There are two things about song...one lyric and two melody (music)...While both are important ingredients of a song, each has its role...while lyric gives meaning and mood and music sends that message deep....

Now the comparision of mastreos....LaxmikanthPyarelal duo and Pancham....i feel we are not qualified enough to compare until we understand the genre they represent.

We, Indians relate themselves more with Hindustani.....LP's strong point....but there is a problem with this that the composer will become naturally inclined to certain raaga all the time in his composition....its kind of mother and child relation.....once you start composing...we start falling in love with it....

Sachin da  and Pancham da  are two composers who experimented folklore and relied more on melody while keeping compositions less dependent on Hindustani...this is the reason why when we see the quality of music with Lyric in mind, LP's composition may seem superior...but as far as reachability is concerned..it requires mesmarizing melody which SD and RD are UNCROWNED KINGS at.

Take me,...i am a telugu and place i belong no body speak and understand Hindi....still RD's music is very popular here...many people are like me who keep those pancham's compositions close to heart...... only when i married a north indian did i learnt hindi and could understand why musicians like LP , Roshan and ShankarJaikishan are so popular in Hindi music....

but still  Pancham will remain with me.....bcos thats the music i have grown up loving....
