shantaram
[warning : not purely bollywood related discussion]

I just finished reading the book, and thought it was amazing. Without giving any spoilers, I would like to say the book is about an Australian who escapes to Bombay from a high security prison (in Aus) and his experiences in India over the next few years.

The book was in the news recently because it's going to be made into a (hollywood) movie starring johnny depp, produced by brad pitt & directed by mira nair.

Do check out http://www.shantaram for more info about the book, the characters, etc.

Re: shantaram

wud like to hear from all movie and novel buffs...

i read godfather long back, then i got to see the movie also... somehow i found that the effect that the novel can have on one was just missing from the movie... perhaps the power of expressing something in words is much more than the visual... perhaps its length of movie also... i specifically remember the effect of reading about luca brasi in the novel on me and then when i saw it in the movie... do you find similar thing for movies like harry potter or lotr etc?

if this is the case, unfortunately the movie might turn out to be a disappointment :-)... i think one should either read the book or watch the movie :-)...

Re: shantaram
well I havent read the novels LOTR and Harry Potter, but I read The day of the Jackal by Fredrick Forsyth and then saw the movie with the same name, and I can assure you that the movie did justice to the novel.
But on the other hand we have examples like Da Vinci Code, it was a great novel but the movie was a complete disaster, I think it depends on the Director of the movie how well he can portray the emotions  and the expressions of the novel.

Re: shantaram
well...to get back to shantaram...there was an article in bangalore times today that SRK has been approached to play a cameo in the movie. amitabh has already agreed to play a part. so looks like it will be a big starcast.

I hope the movie does justice to the book. I am not expecting anything great, just that it's able to hold a candle to the book. the latter is always better is my opinion.

Re: shantaram

I dont think SRK will be signed for this movie... but Im sure when they make a crappy remake of Shantaram 20 years from now, SRK will do Big B's role and the movie would suck.. hey guys im back..

i thought marriage would improve deepak's senses, but it has sadly not happened. i pity your wife, who i am sure is a die-hard SRK fan.

Re: shantaram
oh if she thought that SRK and Kajol are married then I can bet she is not an SRK Fan, coz all SRK fans follow the developments in his life closely!

Re: shantaram
hey shantanu...i think deepak meant SRK & karan johar, not SRK & kajol! :-)

Anyway let's stick to shantaram - anybody here has read the book and wants to comment about it?
