The National Film Development Corporation (NFDC), India's state-run film financing body, finally has a chairman in celebrated actor Om Puri. Addressing the media after taking charge, Puri familiarized us with his role. However, he could not yet clearly define NFDC’s objectives in keeping with the changing times. Asked if there were changes he’d like to bring about, he said, “There is no specific agenda in mind as of now. I’d like to know what the current projects are and what’s in the pipeline.”Most NFDC films are critically acclaimed, although they do not manage to rake in the moolah. Now that Om Puri is the watchdog, will he look into the profit inducing aspect of NFDC? He says, “It’s not a filmmaking organisation. Moreover, the sort of films NFDC makes is not commercial.”How successful Puri’s stint will be can be decided only after we see some commercial success for NFDC.
