An interesting thought may not necessarily translate into an interesting screenplay. AA DEKHEN ZARA is a prime example of this statement.
Think about it... A man inherits his grandfather's camera and with the camera comes the ability to see the future. What an idea, Sirji... But AA DEKHEN ZARA is akin to a bottle of soda, which starts off with a lot of energy, but the fizz settles down faster than expected. AA DEKHEN ZARA had great potential to be a riveting thriller, but halfway through the film, you realize that the writers have run out of ideas. In fact, by the time the film reaches the finale, the viewer is terribly confused [like the writers of this film]. This is one jigsaw puzzle that remains unsolved even after its culmination. In a nutshell, AA DEKHEN ZARA promises the moon, but what you eventually get in return is merely a mirage.
Ray [Neil Nitin Mukesh], a struggling photographer, has nothing going for him... until he inherits a very special camera from his grandfather which changes his life in a way that he could not have imagined in his wildest dreams. The power of the camera changes Ray's destiny overnight. His life becomes one big roller coaster ride that takes him from rags to riches and also helps him meet the love of his life, Simi [Bipasha Basu], who is a DJ with a mind of her own. Everything is hunky dory.
As they say with great power comes great responsibility and in Ray's case, also great danger. He must now face up to the dark side of reality and win not only against the evil forces, but also against fate.
Come to think of it, your imagination can run wild with a premise like the one in AA DEKHEN ZARA. But the film runs out of fuel midway.
Director Jehangir Surti has an eye for visuals, but he ought to know that the viewer wants to listen to a good story, told in the most simplistic manner. You ought to be extra careful if you're attempting a suspense thriller. You need to disentangle the knots in such a way that the mystery doesn't remain a mystery in the end. In this case, it still remains a mystery.
15 minutes into the film and you're drawn into Neil's world. You are exhilarated every time he wins a lottery or race. The introduction of the negative force [Rahul Dev] is smartly handled as well. But the plot slackens thereafter. Let's get specific, the second hour is a problem. The screenplay should've packed some great moments, but the writers seem to take an easy way out. Sample this. While on the run, Neil and Bipasha suddenly break into a dance in a tacky pub. Prior to that they jump from the roof of the hotel and land straight into the pool. The cat and mouse game gets more and more confusing with the finale only adding to the chaos.
Jehangir Surti can't do much since he's saddled with a poor script. Music is the sole saving grace. The songs are youthful and energetic, one of the reasons why AA DEKHEN ZARA has generated tremendous interest. Cinematography is good. The chase and stunts are well canned.
Neil Nitin Mukesh showed great promise in his debut film and you only expect him to climb the ladder in his next release. Sadly, the screenplay doesn't give him that opportunity. Bipasha Basu is alright. She looks great though. Rahul Dev is perfect for the part. Biswajeet [Neil's grandfather] has a tiny role. Sophie Chaudhary adds to the glamour quotient. She doesn't get much scope, frankly. Bobby Vats is okay.
On the whole, AA DEKHEN ZARA had the potential to be an exciting fare, but the post-interval portions prove a deterrent. The fantastic promotion coupled with the popular musical score will ensure ample footfalls in the opening weekend, but the film lacks the stamina to run steadily. |

READ FULL REVIEW AT MY BLOG : CLICK HERE Without giving further details about the story, [as it is available everywhere] I would like to put quick take. ADZ is a brilliant work of fast paced screenplay. Though it slows down a little bit in second half, but that too was needed to develop the mystery and reveal new truths about the story. That worked very well. Otherwise it would have been monotonus. Also the movie has got such a unique story. Yes, there are many movies about future prediction and future visions. But this was such a crispy new idea that 'clicked'.
Bips looks wooooooooooooooooooooow. Loved her in each each frame. She is getting gorgeous day by day. In Bachna Ae Haseeno she was great and here she breaks that too. And well, she pairs up with Neil well too, even while Neil is so younger than her. The pairing looks confortable with each other. As a DJ, also she looks hawt. The bit I loved most of her was the song 'Mohabbat Aapse' when she hides behind the mic and silently cries. ooh...
Neil, is good. But not as good as Johnny Gaddar. I think this time, in this role he could have done this much better. Still, he suits the role and plays his part honestly, and succeeds. He needs to improve his voice and dancing too. Cause besides this, there are more genre he is gonna work in the bollywood. Isnt' it? My fav scene of him was when he says Rahul Dev: 'Main Khatam, tum khatam'.
Its Rahul Dev, who makes impact. In this 'few characters' movie, he leaves everyone with his impression. Okay, agree he looks quite older than he was used to. I think a good stylist could have done things better for him. But his role was developed very well. And as a baddy he worked. And loved the bit, when a shop gets looted and he alongwith Neil, runs away from there, in a nick of time he takes away SpiderMan comics !! And reads it on the way !!
Director Jehangir has chosen a pretty tough subject. Where in Bolly, sci-fi movies are a big risk. Only superhit I know is Mr India. After that, no one succeeded in the genre. And here in this movie, director gets full marks. Because he is not tempted in putting special effect heavy scenes or flying objects [though there couldn't be, in this story] But keeping everything simple he made this way more crisp with elements of mystery. Quite like Edge of Seat, what will happen next...movie. There were some technical flaws cause story deals with Date and Time. But given a Masala Movie, forgive him.
Pritam, ummm..well has given an *average* score to this one. Given a hit soundtrack, this movie could have done wonders.
I will go with 3 out of 5 for this one. Its a good masala entertainer. Watch it for sizzling Bips and yummy fresh story idea. READ FULL REVIEW AT MY BLOG : CLICK HERE |

Aa Dekhen Zara is such a nice thriller just like Johnny Gaddar. Like it has a lot of action and it is just the movie. The movie is about The out-of-work, freelance wild-life photographer hero of the film, Ray ( Neil Nitin Mukesh ), inherits such a magical, antique-looking camera from his granddad and puts it to good use. Through photographs taken by the cam, Ray takes a peek into the future and bets on horses, lotteries and stock market. Soon his cupboard is stashed with wads of cash. Penury days well behind him, Ray buys a new house, a swanky car, and everything else that easy-earned money can buy. But there’s trouble. Money can’t buy love. Ray's girlfriend Simi (Bipasha Basu) feels neglected and even as Ray tries to win Simi’s love, there are other people who come to know about the camera and want it at any cost. And then, to Ray’s horror, the camera predicts his doom. The music is so great!!!!!!!! I love Gazab and Mohabbat Aapse. Bipasha Basu is so sexy and she can dance. Sophie Chaudhary looks beauty, but she is only an eye-candy. Neil Mukesh owns the film. The performance by all the cast is great. The director, Jehangir Surti tries a lot with this film and plz, plz go and see it.

Aa dekhe zara claimed to be a romantic sci-fi action thriller but in my view it was far from any of this. Directed by Jehangir Surti in what can be called only a pathetic attempt at making a sci fi movie, the plot starts off with Ray acharya (Neil Nitin Mukesh) staring into a picture trying to look petrified and immediately the plot goes to flash back where Ray is a struggling free lance photographer. On returning from one of his escapades, he realizes his nana who was a brilliant scientist, has expired and rushes to complete his last rites. Upon reaching there, his nana’s advocate narrates the story that has been, with regard to his nana. While ray is reminiscing past memories, he chances upon a key to a locker which leads him to the sci fi bit of the story – a camera with unimaginable power. Thankfully, to end the monotony, Simi Chatterjee(Bipasha Basu) comes into the picture. She is a happy -go-lucky dancer/DJ who also happens to be Ray’s neighbour. Being so close, their fates had to be intertwined and Ray is able to pick her up with relative ease. The plot builds with the concept of them going on happily with ray making himself a fortune with the help of his special camera. Everything seems to be working out great till, what according to me seems to be the only highlight in the movie, where sophie(Sophie Choudary) walks in in a sexy bikini causing some tensions between Ray n Simi. But like most movies, there is the Dr. Evil played by Rahul Dev who is a hired gun by the advocate and is in search for the camera. The plot continues as a complete roller coaster ride with a lot of ups and downs leading to anything but a climactic end. For me it was a complete waste of two hours and Neil Nitin Mukesh and Bipasha Basu didn’t make it any better with their acting which was just amateurish. Aa dekhe zara has absolutely no dum in it. Watch it only if you’ve got the stomach to. |
