Screenplay's victory over everything else!

The film rocks! It is a victory of good screenplay over everything else. The story is very simple, too simple to be thought of as a film but the director has actually pulled out an interesting film out of such a simple premise.

An educated Muslim boy comes back to India, and wants to be with his family after the terrorist attack in London. But outside the air port, he is given a mobile phone. He is informed that his family is kidnapped and now he has to follow the instructions given to him on phone to retrieve his family. He does everything that he could but in the process he encounters the tragic realities of the life as Muslim person, which is a double edged sword. How he chooses to be different and to make a difference is the story of the film! Yes, it’s over, it’s all that is there in the film and yet the film works brilliantly.

The film follows Aamir (Rajeev Khandelwal, who has done a fairly decent job) and the terrorist leader whose phone Aamir has received. Most of the time we know what Aamir knows, and Aamir is naïve, so we also remain naïve till the end.

In the first five minutes of the film only we start to like Aamir, because he is smart, intelligent and upright. His value system is in place. He is a person with whom we can identify. He is a person who has struggled in life to achieve everythings. He has a family he cares for, he loves his people and they love him. And when he gets in trouble we want to see him out of it, but it’s not an easy journey for him.

It’s such a surprise that with such a simple story and without any star cast the film keeps audience hooked till the last moments. The film which is shot mostly on locations presents an interesting reality in front of the audience. The shots of Mumbai’s slum areas are eye openers. Camera continuously follows the expression of people who are just the viewers; who sees different things happening around them with utmost apathy. This reminds us continuously that we are letting things happen around us which should not happen and it will affect our lives. Aamir is a must see film and it is so encouraging that the theatre was house full and tickets were not available even for silver row. I whistled in excitement and happiness that Aamir is doing so well.  After all it is the victory of good film over bad films and it deserves applaud. Believe me no matter what we say to ourselves the fact is Indian audience is extremely intelligent today. They really have developed taste for good films. If a film doesn’t work today, 90% probability is the film was not good. Because audience is so receptive that they are even willing to change their sensibility to accommodate good films. Three cheers for Aamir, three cheers for good films, three cheers for good screenplays.

Whats the definition of a hindi film hero – one who beats up 100 guys all alone or defeats a crowd of well trained terrorist all alone . but Aamir is different he is  a realistic hero . a common man who s forced to make a choice between heroism & cowardice & he chosses the former . he ius a realistic hero . Aamir is quite effortlessly one of the finest films of the yr .

The story of a doctor life in one day – a day which changes his life completely . the liberal Aamir   is forced by a radical man whose face he never sees to do  some work for his radical organization after his parents are kidnapped . unknowing & innocent he has no choice but to dance like the monkey toy does in he movie according to wishes of the man & has to pass through many unknown paths of mumbai9 , one of which even propels him to vomit  . all this while the man blames Aamir of not helping his own people in the religious  fight . but the liberal minded  Aamir  contradicts him & questions his unwanted fight against innocence . this very attitude helps him in outstanding climax where he makes the fatal sacrifice of choosing to save innocent lives instead his own . the liberal wins  & the radical looses .& shows what sacricice in religion in reality is .

There are three outstanding scenes in the movie that define its brilliance – the contradicting dialogues between the two sides , the final revelation or when Aamir fights for the bag to save his famly are some of the many exhilarating moments in the movie

We hail the coming of a new genius in  raj kumar gupta the director who gives outstanding visualization to the brilliant script of Aamir ., his treatment to the movie is one which should be a lesson for all cinema students . the story though in idea similar to Cellular is much more deep in thought & spirit . cinematograh y is brilliant as it captures the rustic lanes of Mumbai superbly . the songs are in sync with the movie & have been used beautifully .

The movie belongs to Rajeev Khandelwal – What a debut , his expression are outstanding .  u don’t need to listen to him but see What aamir is thinking through his eyes . hope to see this natural actor in bigger films .

At the end Aamir is our story with which anybody can connect a story which will make u think even after a day u have watched it . Brilliant

I'd recommend this movie to every movie buff.. Its time to watch Realistic movies.. Bollywood movies come with glamour/fake to touch the hearts of people.. But this one doesn't need all the crap... It justs uses an imaginary ordinary character called "Aamir" played by Rajeev Khandelwal. Its a well directed movie.. well paced... Every moment is a great experience of thrill. I would not reveal the story. Watch it.. Its an eye-opener!!! Ditch the bad reviews!!!

There are very few films released in this year which were expected to be big hit at the box office...but resulted some disasters...In case of Aamir the picture is different.People liking it...because it should be liked....

The film starts with an NRI doctor Aamir Ali who comes India to meet her family and suddenly some very unexpected things occurs to him. Then things becomes more difficult and misterious. The film has got a good story and some extraordinary performance.Debutant Rajiv Khandelwal is a well-known face in Television industry. If he continues his film career with such good works as he did in this film...Bollywood will have another good actor. The main advantage of the story is viewers will expect something else and things will go in some different way.Its really unpredictable.

Aamir is basically a suspense thriller with very engaging plot.If we look at some other parts, camera movement and cinematography of the film was not upto that mark as it was expected. Background music is the most irritating thing. It should be enriched with good background score. The songs are not upto the mark with the film.

Director Raj Kumar Gupta attempted a different story and has done a good job. There are no  common Masala formula...no item number..It has got a offbit story..decent script,Excellent performance which are enough to make a movie a must watch.May be this type of stories were attempted in '90s in hollywood. But still people will like it.

Rajeev Khandelwal gets applaud for movie Aamir

Rajeev has done a commendable job in his dream debut movie Aamir. He was skeptical of the movie success when he joined director Rajkumar Gupta bandwagon .Rajkumar gupta himeslf confessed that new comers actors have a great commitment compare to establish actors .

Rajeev plays the role of a middle class Muslim boy, who comes to India after completing his education in Britain. The young doctor returning home after studying in the UK is asked at the airport: Kyon, visa extend nahin kiya? And that hits home, both with the hero, and with us, the viewers. Racial profiling has become a huge scourge, both at home and abroad. His character, Aamir, falls into a trap as soon as he lands in India and gets involved in a bigger conspiracy.

Following his debut film, Rajeev would be seen doing a film on what he is best at - romance. “I would be seen in a love story to be produced by UTV. But the formal announcement would be made shortly,” he said.here on starboxoffice.com i found exclusive pics of movie Aamir.

Before stepping into filmy world, Rajeev was known for being a passionate lover boy in Balaji Telefilms’ soap Kahiin Toh Hoga, which brought him instant success.

Thereafter, he was seen in Zee TV’s weekly show Time Bomb 9/11, which did not amuse the audience, and finally he appeared as Captain Rajveer Singh Shikhawat in SAB TV’s youthful show Left Right Left.

Hey Everyone!!

I'm damn sure that Aamir's gonna be a superb movie. After all, when television's King is there, then there must be no fear!

Rajeev will definately do a superb job, so will director Rajkumar Gupta. The cinematography, screenplay, storyline, evrything will be astonishing. Mind my words, Aamir will definately be an enthralling experience.

How can i say that? Well, just read the review by Taran Adarsh.... I think he loved the film!!

As for the background score, it also deserves a perfect 10 from me, as i've heard all the songs.... the songs are different and very innovative.

Amit Trivedi excels as the music director - singer! I like all the songs, but i love the song Ha Raham (Mehfooz) specially.

It's a must watch, please don't miss it!!

Aamir produced by the experimental wing of UTV – UTV Spotboys by debutant Rajkumar Gupta comes across very much unlike any UTV film lacking promotion and publicity. The film starring Rajeev Khandelwal , the face of Indian television comes across as the so called smaller film of the week.

Synopsis….

Aamir, the name, means leader, but the protagonist [Rajeev Khandelwal] becomes a follower out of fear. The moment Aamir lands in Mumbai, he's transported to a world he never knew: The dingy areas of Mumbai. In its lanes and bylanes, cheap restaurants and lodges, amongst nameless pimps and whores, run-down buildings and over-crowded markets, filth and squalor, Aamir sees a different world in those few hours.

Aamir may not have been promoted well but the film from no angle is a small film. The script is splendid with a theme so universal such as terrorism. Raj Kumar Gupta excels with his storytelling and draws the viewer within the first 15-20 mins.

One element that works with the film is its length which is barely 2 hrs and the absence of unwanted monotonous songs. The hero does not break into any dance number or flashback sequences filled with the accommodation of some tracks but instead the music only acts at the background.

Another element that keeps the film going is the locations used which are the realistic bylanes within the city and the splendid cinematography. This is one film that comes as a complete exception of all bollywood rules with a film with no heroine, no supporting cast , no item numbers  etc.

It’s purely the director’s vision carried forward by Rajeev Khandelwal’s splendid acting and the excellent cinematography. The movie is a must watch. Take a look at every character used in the film be it the whore at the lodge, the men at the restaurant etc. Simply terrific.

As far as the locations are concerned it is splendid . Take a look at the lodge , the restaurant , the bylanes , the toilet sequence ; its remarkable and gripping.

Rajeev Khandelwal does a terrific job . The actors delivers well and carries the trauma and frustration the character Aamir undergoes with ease. Khandelwal comes as a revelation to Bollywood. He surely deserves much more from bollywood. Looks like lots of talent lies within the Indian television industry.

On the whole, Aamir comes as a complete surprise and emerges as the true winner of the week. Aamir is definitely a must watch and proves that a good film in bollywood can indeed be made without songs and without any big names. Ultimately, it’s the script that is king. Don’t miss the climax of the film; it’s very much unlike most bollywood films

A Leader Who Cannot Lead

When I watched the promos of the film "Aamir" a couple of times on tv, I couldn't make much out of it. So when I got the opportunity to watch the film, I decided to find out what it was all about. On a plot level, the film offers an interesting premise. A young Muslim NRI doctor Aamir Ali (played by TV actor Rajiv Khandelwal) comes to Mumbai to visit his family only to find that his day has been turned into a nightmare right upon landing at Mumbai airport. The hapless guy falls into the trap of a radical Muslim terrorist cell who kidnap his family and order him to do a job for them for their safe return. He is given his orders by the leader of the terrorist cell on a cell phone shoved at him by two youths on a mobike just outside Mumbai airport. From that moment on, Aamir keeps on running for the entire movie. During his run which takes place in dark alleys and seedy hotels in old Mumbai, he encounters weird characters including an over-eager prostitute who just can't wait to hone her craft on him, and cheap hotel proprietors who tell each other obscene jokes. He's made to obtain a phone number from a foul-smelling lavatory in a run-down chawl and then to place a phone call to Karachi. He's ordered to go to a man named Khan who gives him a bright red suitcase containing a load of money. All this time the terrorist leader is repeatedly calling him on his cell phone trying to indoctrinate him with his idealogy. When Aamir goes out with the bag, he is ambushed by some goons who beat him up and make off with the bag. Suddenly he is confronted by the same prostitute he met earlier at the hotel. She says she knows where they went and can tell the information in exchange for money. When she leads him to them, he goes berserk and starts hitting them with a stout metal rod, until they give up the bag. He then goes to a bus stop clutching the bag and is told to board a bus for Andheri. Once inside the bus he is told to hide the bag under the seat and get out. That's when he realises that he has been set up and the bag was switched, and it now contains a bomb that will go off any second. Aamir is overcome by emotion and pangs of guilt, so as an act of defiance, he takes the suitcase out of its hiding place and gets out of the bus with it when the bus has stopped at a traffic signal. Just when the signal turns green, the bomb goes off along with Aamir, thus carrying on the time-honoured notion of "Qurbani", "Tyaag", and "Balidaan" that is so prevalent in Indian films. Fortunately they've not gone overboard with it. Generally this film falls into the villian-makes-the-hero-run-around-via-remote-control-thriller category of films a la "Die Hard With A Vengeance", "Speed" and "Phone Booth". But unlike these films where the protagonist fights back and eventually outsmarts his opponent, Aamir does nothing of the kind. He just keeps follwing orders meekly. If I'd have written this film, I'd like to have my protagonist show a bit of spunk and fight back. Overall, the screenplay is tight enough, but loses its grip on a few occasions. Aamir is dazed and bewildered and slow to respond many times. He often answers the phone after many rings and the relentless rings of the phone start irritating you after a while. You start thinking, "Hey buddy, get a move on, here!". Anybody who's been told that his family has been kidnapped would be on edge, jumpy and impatient, and likely to answer the phone the second it starts ringing. The look and feel of the film is very much influenced by Anurag Kashyap's "No Smoking", including the dinghy lanes and quirky characters, the costumes and the background score. Rajiv Khandelwal gives a very competent, sincere performance as the harried Aamir Ali. You do feel for him at times, he looks so vulnerable. Photography by Alphonse Roy is good. After all, what is worth showing in Mumbai has been seen on screen a million times before, so there's nothing new or spectacular about it. The score by Amit Trivedi is interesting. His job was probably made easier because there is only one emotion running throughout the film and that is tension. A lot of the score is primarily synth-based, with a few orchestral flourishes during the second half. A couple of songs are quite good. A qawwali type song comes on during the scene when Aamir is fighting with the bag snatchers, but it feels a bit out of place. Probably the director wanted a feel similar to "No Smoking" when the song "Kash Laga" comes on suddenly when you least expect it. So overall, Aamir is a well-written, well-shot film, but the problem is that these kinds of films have been made in the early '90s in the west so the plot is not new to the discerning movie watcher. Worth a look once, if not more.
