Agyaat? is bounded with cheap thrills and proves to be a lousy flick letting down the ardent buffs, who eagerly expected it. To begin with, it?s a good attempt by this scrapper who hardly believes in his film?s results. A horror-adventure, somewhat like ?Predator? had really knocked a high-shot on our adrenalines. Perhaps, scenarios are different once you?re before the screens.
You?ve nothing such horripilations that strike your unconditioned reflex. But, RGV offers a perfect tutorial to wannabe filmmakers penning scripts based on horrors. Firstly, get an outstanding cinematographer who aimlessly focuses on weird objects randomly. As you all know, the other one, get the best sound-effects? plug-ins from abroad. That?s all, you?re done with your job of making a horror pic.
Well, we aren?t blaming Ram Gopal Varma as his flicks remain best on the stands of horror genre. Who can eclipse his spellbinding ?Bhoot?? Of course, his previous flick ?Phoonk? had some interesting parts. Looks like, He?s keen on the pattern of making couple of flops-and-hits on the row.
?Agyaat? has nothing exceptional with all the characters skittering and yelling with scariness. It?s centered on a film crew heading to thick forests for shooting few sequences. All is well and good, until they decide to take off for a break. They spend their time chilling out and things turn out to be topsy-turvy with mysterious killings on one by one in crew. What unfolds next is the entire team running for their lives.
First things first: praise RGV for his knack of directing cinematography. He delivers perfect spell on establishing the pictorials with top-notching depth and innovative placements of camera angles. The auteur has exactly replicated the formulas of dozen-Hollywood flicks where the first half has nothing related-to ?Thrill? factors. Obviously, in the latter half, the proceedings have been middlingly done with few spine-tingling quotients? One would really wonder why there were so many songs. But you?ve got to praise the background score and sound engineer for embellishing screens with prodigious effects.
Telugu actor Nithin does come up with earnest efforts of emoting stupendously to the moment. But Priyanka Kothari seems to overact in many scenes, especially where she expands her eyes and squalls of highest decibels.
Putting ?Agyaat? on whole, it?s a simple film with some interesting parts. With producers investing small money, they?re sure to get their pocket brimmed with profit-sum as it would witness good business till next week. But Ramu disappoints us a lot.
Verdict: Watch it once

Ram Gopal Verma has now mellowed down in not only in terms of realizing that the Karan Johar?s so called mushy, formula based cinema works, but also somewhere, unknowingly uses some of the age old techniques in his latest Agyaat, but alas, it also doesn?t works for him. The innovative Ramu who gave us an absolute edge of the seat thrillers like Kaun, Bhoot and Raat has taken the route of depicting six pack abs ?hero?, (infact, one of the character from the film, ironically, mouths the dialogue also about the six pack abs hero formula), two useless item songs and unnecessary skin show on pretext of ?heroine?s? work out near the pond or even while getting rid of the leeches from her body and the old experiment of hero saving the heroine in the end. But alas, doesn?t work. And if the series of killings were supposed to be done by the ?Agyaat?, then why 2 of your 9 characters commit suicide and 1 is murdered? Why did you hesitate to show their gruesome dead bodies? Agyaat truly gave you platform to show some very cruel death sequences and some ghoulish act and corpses. You could have shown all what you have in mind, massacred dead bodies, severed limbs, broken skulls but you missed that. What works for the film are the sound effects and some good cinematography. But is that all to make his film work? The answer is No. No Mr. Ramu, the audience spending 200 bucks wanted to know more about your ?Agyaat? but the poor audience leaves the theatre grinning their teeth, somewhat feeling cheated and probably cursing themselves, (literally, I heard that), for believing you again after the debacles like RGV Ke Sholay, Darling etc, etc, falling trap to their curiosity arising from your aggressive ?dead body hanging from the hoarding advertising gimmick?, and curious to know about your Agyaat. Will they return to Agyaat 2? May be Yes, may be No. Yes, if in case Recession times are over and their spending power increases. No, because, they are losing hope in you and your RGV brand cinema. But one thing is for sure. They will never return this time because of their curiosity to find out who in the name of God was or is your ?Agyaat?. RGV, we love you and your experimenting techniques and to be very honest, I personally find you and Vishal Bhardwaj as one of the most innovative directors of Indian Cinema. So please, give us thrillers like Raat, Bhoot and Kaun. You are a true master in that. You have changed the concept of horror for Bollywood, breaking the age old shackles of Ramsays and their permanent ghost Anirudh Agarwal. I will definitely go for Agyaat 2, Agyaat 3 or should I call Agyaat series provided you promise me a Raat, Bhoot or even a Kaun. |

Agyaat borrows from Predator, the TV serial Lost and a bunch of other B movies. A film unit, shooting in a forest, goes on a camping trip when their camera breaks down. Setu (Joy Fernandez), the guy who knows the way out of the jungle gets killed and the rest of them do not know the way out. Meanwhile each member of the unit keeps getting killed by some unknown predator. Will they be able to safely escape the forest is what the rest of the movie is about. For a horror/thriller movie there is not a single scene in the movie that scares you or gives you any adrenaline rush. The characters are loud and annoying. Gautam, the hero, is arrogance personified. The action director always wants to fight and Ashaji (Priyanka Kothari) is a gentle lady who does some Yoga so that the camera can voyeuristically capture every part of her body. The Kanjoos producer is an "Aiyoo Aiyoo" South Indian. The director thinks too highly of himself. Almost everyone is eccentric except for the leading pair. The characters are so annoying that the viewers would not mind their getting bumped off. To top it there are cheesy lines like "Tum Apne liye na sahi, Apni Maa like koshish karo" and deliberate mention of "Agyaat" a few times to justify the title. Ram Gopal Verma returns with a new spooky venture minus any publicity gimmick as used in his last movie “Phoonk”. But the expectation level from an RGV film, still remains high as usual, with his fans waiting for something new, each time he returns to the screen. However, after his last few movies, RGV fans are now divided into two sections. One, who are the die-hard fans and would watch his movies irrespective of the content or subject. And second, who love RGV but still don’t go for his new release at once and prefer waiting for the general response. “Agyaat” will be a disappointment to both these sections as the original Ram Gopal Verma is completely missing from the scene, this time.
The movie can be reviewed in just a few lines as it gives you nothing much to write about in details. First of all it is neither a scary horror movie nor a fast paced exciting thriller as shown in its publicity campaigns. It only revolves around an idea of merciless killings made by an unidentified power, roaming in the forests. The victims are the people of a film unit, shooting on location in the dense forest, led by a local villager, who knows the area in details. Now how they all meet with their deadly ends is the only theme for this new disappointing venture from Ram Gopal Verma.
“Agyaat” straight away starts off with a song, which was really surprising coming from the master film-maker. And then it tests your patience till the next 60 minutes since nothing happens on the screen as expected. It picks up in the second half but by then you already know what is going to happen till the end. Throughout the movie, you keep on feeling that there is something strange going on, not at par with the style and standards of the brand, Ram Gopal Verma. RGV only seems to be there in the experimental climax, where once again he surprises with a bizarre kind of ending, used so daringly. The climax makes you wonder, the level of confidence this man has, who doesn’t even care about the success or failure of his projects.
The acting department has only one name you will remember after going through this so called horror thriller, and that is Priyanka Kothari. She shows great improvement with her controlled performance and sensual looks. But rest all, are just fine in their routine kind of roles having nothing great in store for any particular character.
The movie hugely depends upon the Sound Effects, Background score and Cinematography. But in my opinion it’s high time we have to move ahead from only relying upon the Sound Design and Camerawork in a horror or thriller film. Along with these essential ingredients, the story and content also has to be looked upon as a major contributor in this genre. Sadly, the latest offering from “The Maestro” scores the minimum in this department and has only got the virgin locations showcasing the beautiful Sri Lankan forest as its best part.
In few words “Agyaat” is just another project from the RGV factory which even raises doubts on being directed by the Master himself. May be he looked after the project as the caretaker and only gave his inputs towards the climax. Anyway, Ram Gopal Verma once again disappoints in a big way and wastes our hard earned money and time. The low cost of the project may rope in some returns but RGV desperately needs to reinvent himself for the sake of all his fans. (by Bobby Sing at www.bobbytalkscinema.com) |
