The large joint family of Shivnath Sharma (Harindranath Chattopadhyay) has its share of misunderstandings and discord. With grown up sons and their families living under one roof, differences of opinion threaten to split up the family. Krishna (Jaya Bhaduri) is the daughter of the house who lost her parents in an accident. When a new cook (Rajesh Khanna) takes up a job in the house, the family members discover that he is much more than a mere chef. He sings, dances and writes poetry and soon becomes everyone's confidante. He solves every problem they come to him with and sorts out their misunderstandings, teaching them patience and understanding. Gradually the family bonds become stronger. Then one day, the cook vanishes...! Was this man a superb confidence trickster or is there some other explanation? Hrishikesh Mukherjee's sensitive portrayal of the dynamics within a family and how they affect relationships, has a brilliant performance from Rajesh Khanna and a strong supporting cast consisting of A.K. Hangal, Durga Khote and Harindranath Chattopodhyay.
