One of the cities which have remained untapped by the fashion industry is Chennai. Come December, the city is going to witness the largest fashion week of the country, or so they claim! Chennai International Fashion Week (CIFW) will see the participation of more than 10 international designers from 12 countries across the globe along with a hoard of our talented Indian designers. With the vision of providing an international platform to the Indian designers to showcase and market their collections to the global fashion world, the gala event is scheduled for December 14-20, 2009 at the luxurious Le Royal Meridian in Chennai. It is also aimed at showcasing India as an important fashion destination for foreign buyers and designers’ who want to make it big in the South-east Asian markets. So why Chennai as the venue? Gaurav Sharma, the head of Storm Fashion Company, the organizers and the producers of the event said on a lighter note, “The city has been always known for its hot weather so we thought of making it haute! The first edition has been strategically placed in Chennai for its proximity to Tirupur; one of the largest garment export hubs in India. 30 Indian fashion designers, 10 international guest designers, 35 fashion shows, 60 models from India and abroad – all will be clubbed together in this event. The designers will present the latest fashion trends that will dominate the Spring/Summer 2010-11. The show will also have 10 international beauty Pageant Winners from various countries walking the runway! The event is being backed by a very strong and accomplished board of professionals. Headed by marketing and services professional Gaurav Sharma, the team's advisors include Chennai’s very own Shakthi Girsh, Pratap Pothen , Arun Mammen, Girish Ramdass and Meera Chopra. Some of the Indian designers who will be participating include Pria Kataaria Puri, Shane & Falguni Peacock, Vikram Phadnis, Sanchita Ajjampur, Aslam Khan, Satya Paul, Jason & Anshu, Nishka Lulla and Neeta Lulla. Designer Anshu of the label Small Shop shared, Since we are based in Chennai and already have stores, we thought it would be good to be a part of such a huge event. We will be showcasing our Spring-Summer collection called- Na Ati. Pria Kataaria Puri is scheduled to open the show with Bollywood actress Neetu Chandra as her show stopper. The grand finale will be by designer Neeta Lulla and this event will also offer a platform for 10 new designers to present their talent. Talking about the sponsors of the event, Gaurav revealed, Kingfisher is the main partner. In addition to it, Arvind Mills is one of the associates and we are looking for more associations. Steadily moving towards the main event, the organizers have planned out an All India Model Auditions in Bangalore on November 8, 2009 and the models will be critically valued by a panel of judges comprising of Anupama Verma (Super Model, Actress & Fashion Producer), Mehar Bhasin (Fashion Choreographer/Grooming Expert), Pravin Talan (Celebrated International Photographer) Atul Kelkar (Consultant), Rahul Dev Shetty (Fashion Model/Choreographer). Says Mehar Bhasin, show director CIFW – It’s been my dream to perform at Chennai and CIFW has come as a unique platform with the concept of global fashion. Out of the 35 shows, I’ll be choreographing ten main shows. We are looking to have fresh faces with good catwalk styles. Plus it is an opportunity to present modelling world with debut faces. One of the jury members, Rahul Dev Shetty added, During model auditions, I am looking for someone who is, fresh, vibrant, young and confident. The model need not be pretty but must have attitude, good height and proportionate attractive body, he signs off. One simple question to start with……In the current scenario, are we always supposed to see a Bollywood Comedy leaving our thinking brains at home?......Really fed up with this phrase often used to praise mindless comedies, I was completely taken back by the treatment given by Priyadarshan to his latest script-less movie called “De Dana Dan”. Once again taking his inspirations from the English flicks, “Blame It on The Bellboy” (1992) & “The Towering Inferno” (1974), the director delivers a completely over the top and loud movie which miserably fails to impress the viewers in any of its department.
With more than 20 characters in the script, played by all well known actors of the Industry, the project has too many things to deal with on its platter. It really remains a questionable decision that even after the presence of the famous “Hera Pheri” comic trio, what was the need of roping in almost everyone related to comedy genre in the industry ranging from the veterans Asrani & Shakti Kapoor to the currently famous Johny Lever & Rajpal Yadav. Priyadarshan may have successfully dealt with them all in few of his previous projects but this time he simply slips disastrously.
Storyline has never been the major highlight of a Priyadarshan project. But in “De Dana Dan”, he very daringly treats the story requirement of a movie in the most careless manner. Starting with few good scenes moving around a Kidnapping plot, the movie starts going into various opposite directions with a desperate plea to make you laugh. Post interval it looks like the director and the whole unit somehow lost their original script in the transit and just went on with the shooting as per their outdoor schedule. After an hour the movie has nothing related to a story and it just has all its characters confusingly following each other with mistaken identities. Collectively living in the same five star hotel, everyone keeps barging into unknown rooms trying to create some hilarious scenes for the viewers. And the most surprising part is that post intermission the biggest star of the movie, Akshay Kumar simply vanishes from the screen for more than half an hour. According to the proceedings he gets locked in a closet and remains there for a good amount of time. But what was the use of locking your most sellable star like that. Anyone else could have been easily locked with a little change in the one page script.
“De Dana Dan” has loads of absurdities in its narration, which fail to convince even if you take them as a part of a brainless comedy flick. For instance, a full grown man (Akshay Kumar) has been kidnapped but the whole Indian community (in Singapore) and the entire media is searching for a kid instead, because that is the only photograph available of the kidnapped person. In the climax the top floor water reservoir of a more than 30 story hotel gets exploded due to a bomb. And that shockingly brings a major flood like situation in the entire multistory building with everything floating in the heavy water flow. In fact the silly watery sequence hilariously resembled the one recently seen in “Tum Mile”.
Performance wise this is a perfect example of a film with the most numbers of stars, where not even one makes his presence felt in the end. For the first time ever, I found Paresh Rawal, hamming with his intentional Punjabi accent. The viewers are sure going to miss the cult Paresh Rawal act of his previous hit comedies. Akshay Kumar is not entirely there in the movie. He starts off with some good scenes with Archna Puran Singh, but later gets lost in the overcrowded star-cast. Not using him as per his much applauded comic timing is entirely the fault of his director. Suniel Shetty does his act with an unconcerned ease and he seems to be included only to complete the famous comedy trio.
Both Katrina Kaif & Sameera Reddy can count their major scenes on one hand. They only contribute in the film as its female lead and nothing else. In comparison, Neha Dhupia makes a better impact in her few moments on the screen. Archana Puran Singh shouts more and acts less. Aditi Gowariker once again proves that she is better model. Shakti Kapoor repeats his sex maniac act. Asrani, Tinnu Anand & Manoj Joshi are routine, but Chunkey Pandey, Rajpal Yadav and Johny Lever are simply wasted in their unimportant roles. Sharat Saxena & Vikram Ghokhle are miscast as they simply do not belong to the comedy genre.
Pritam’s music is not outstanding as expected. But the RDB track “Paisa Paisa” is a major hit which also has its own history in the Punjabi Music Industry. The track was the opening song of the Debut Album of Manak-E released few years back, which had music by RDB and was also promoted well with a music video on the leading Punjabi channels. It was indeed quite thoughtful of both RDB and Akshay to use the song with the same singer in the promotional campaign of the movie. But as usual, all the songs are inserted in the script without any specific need. Background score by Salim-Suleman is energetic and Cinematography is fine as per the requirement of the subject.
On the whole, it’s just another instance of better promotion and poor content. Few weeks before, I could understand the success of “Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani” (though I personally rated it quite low) as it had a worth praising act by Ranbir Kapoor and some hilarious scenes with mass appeal, but if “De Dana Dan” goes on to become a big Hit then I really fear what kind of projects we are going to get in the near future.
And lastly one sincere request for the director, who gave us the cult “Hera Pheri”……..Please take a break and re-invent yourself on priority basis....! Rating : 1.5 / 5 |

De Dana Dan story line is very thin- it's all about money. She has, he does not. And the song and lyrics reflect this in the whisper/chorus of ?paisa, paisa?????.And it's effect on both individuals, and their lives. Archana has all the money, and plays the spoilt, capitalistic, loud mouth, brat woman to the core. I would say she is sometimes effective. (There is much scope for her to come out of the western copy mould and come into her own style. She has yet to develop that I think.)She has a helper man, Akshay Kumar, who together with Suniel Shetty work their butts ( and many things off) trying to make some quick buck. Mulchandji gives an added twist to the tale.(literally).
The style is of particular note, as it is a mix of slapstick, quick lines, dialogue and situational. I would say it is a very good first attempt by Priyadarshan at action comedy. It has some slick editing, excellent photography(appropriate convex images, shots to make legs look sleeker, etc)
The co-ordinated work of the whole team of stars, administrative and technical team makes this laugh every 15 mins, and sometimes five minutes non stop a worthwhile film to watch and well worth the money spent on it. I particularly appreciated the effective use of digital manipulations.
I would however expect a more realistic, day to day, ordinary comedy the next time which would show this teams' real technical expertise effectively. Now it is upto the people to view to rake in the moolah for them, as apt encouragement for comedy without offending.Definitely a film you can watch with daddy, mummy and grandma.Check for yourself.

This so called comedy flick by Priyadarshan had a sad presentation with a lot of confusion. The first half of the movie was very boring but had some interesting scenes in the later half. There were many characters in the movie so it lacks clarity. After watching the trailer one would feel that it will be full of humor but it rather sounded meaningless at times. It cannot be compared to the directors other hilarious films like Hulchul, Hungama and Chupchup ke. Katrina Kaif and Sameera Reddy do not have many good scenes. Driver Nitin Bankar (Akshay Kumar) and courier boy Ram Mishra (Sunil Shetty) are under debt and therefore try to Kidnap there owners dog. The poor guys want to marry their girlfriends Anjali Kakkad (Katrina Kaif) and Manpreet Oberoi (Sameera Reddy) respectively. Manpreet's father is getting her married to Chadda's son played by Chunky Pandey. All their relatives and friends are collected in a hotel for the wedding. And even Nitin and Ram come and hide in the sane hotel. During this time duration many misconception and fights take place. The last scene of the movie where the whole hotel is flooded is worth watching. And there is a couple of other comedy scenes too. But there was nothing extra ordinary in the film, it continued with the same old boring sequence. And Akshay and Katrina also could not set a good mark with their performances. Music by Pritam also lacked the uniqueness and only Paisa Paisa was the only good song. Rajpal Yadav, Archana Puran Singh and Paresh Rawal created good humor. Neha Dhupia looked hot and Johnny Lever's acting was worth acknowledging. If you want to have some time pass then go and give it a try, but if you are seriously looking for something good then don’t break your head by going for this film. |

De Dana Dan delivers exactly what it promises. It takes the Hera Pheri genre, or more generally, the mindless comic caper category and introduces the "speed" element in it. Literally, De Dana Dan is comic events happening at dan, dan - breakneck speed. On the positive side, the movie is fun to watch, and does not deviate from the formula. Each actor, each character, and there are at least 20 characters (with significant roles) in the movie, play their part well. Of all actors, Johny Lever, and Asrani are probably the best in their parts. Paresh Rawal has done well too. Akshay is now a regular at this theme, dont expect anything new from him, but he does excellently well in his role. The story line is thin overall, but given the complexity (it is really complex) of the 20+ characters - one really finds it difficult to follow the happenings in the movie. the immediate part (about 60 minutes) after the interval is simply mindblowing. the climax is shoddy. Overall good watch, paisa wasool. |
