The film was directed by Ramesh Sippy. This film tells the story of a widow Sheetal (Hema Malini) who is left devastated after the death of her husband Raj (Rajesh Khanna). She is left with one child to look after and teaches in a school and one of her students is the daughter of the widower Ravi (Shammi Kapoor). The children become instrumental in getting the single parents to meet and fall in love. Andaz was one of the last movies for which the great music directors duo, Shankar- Jaikishan composed music together. Jaikishan died of cirrhosis of the liver on September 12, 1971 at the young age of 42. Coincidentally, one of the most popular songs from this film - Zindagi Ek Safar Hai Suhana, Yahaan Kal Kya Ho, Kisne Jaana (Life is a beautiful journey, One never knows what's going to happen tomorrow) turned out to be the last song that Jaikishan recorded before his untimely death. SHANKAR JAIKISHAN Shankar Jaikishan was a duo of prolific music composers who worked in the Indian film industry. The team composed music for over 150 Bollywood movies. They were the highest paid music directors in their time. The team of Shankar Jaikishan consisted of Shankarsingh Raghuwanshi and Jaikishan Dayabhai Panchal. Shankar (October 15, 1922 - April 26, 1987) was born in Punjab and trained under the famous Husnlal Bhagatram. He later settled down in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India. Jaikishan (1929 - September 12, 1971) hails from Vansada, Gujarat, India. Before the duo met, Jaikishan worked as a carpenter. They got filmfare awards for the music of chori chori, Anari, Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai and Mera Naam Joker. They won first filmfare award for music for the film chori chori. They both worked as music assistant with Dattaram for Raj Kapoor's first directed film Aag. The film flopped. But soon after, when Raj Kapoor made Barsaat, he gave break to Shankar-Jaikishan. Barsaat was a musical super hit. The duo never look back. Before the era of Shankar-Jaikishan, there were the legendary musicians like Naushad, Anil Biswas, C. Ramachandra, Husnlal-Bhagatram etc. But with the arrival of Shankar-Jaikishan the new era of melodious and popular music started. Shankar-Jaikishan had a big competition with S.D.Burman, O.P. Nayyar, Roshan, Madan Mohan and Ravi. This was the first big successful musical duo in bollywood. After Shankar-Jaikishan, two more duos arose, namely Kalyanji-Anandji and Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Laxmikant was a great fan of Jaikishan. SHAILENDRA, Shankardas Kesarilal Shailendra (August 30, 1923 - December 14, 1966), popularly known as Shailendra, was a popular Indian Hindi lyricist. Shailendra was born in Rawalpindi in British India, to Kesarilal and Parvati Devi. He was eldest of their four sons. When he was a child, his family moved to Mathura. Soon after, his mother died. He also goes by the name of Akshay. Shailendra started his career as an employee with Indian Railways. His job brought him to Mumbai (then Bombay) in 1947. He started writing poetry during these days. Once, when he was reading out his poem Jalta hai Punjab at a public meeting, filmmaker Raj Kapoor noticed him. He offered to buy poems written by Shailendra and use them for his movie Aag (1948). Shailendra, a member of the left wing IPTA, was wary of mainstream Indian cinema and refused. However, after the birth of his son, Shaily, he needed money and himself approached Raj Kapoor. Shailendra's first project for Raj Kapoor was the movie Barsaat (1949). For Rs 500, he wrote two songs: Patli kamar hai and Barsaat mein. The music for Barsaat was composed by Shankar-Jaikishan. The team of Raj Kapoor, Shailendra and Shankar-Jaikishan produced many superhits. In the days when composers would recommend lyricists to producers.
