Perfect blend of music, story, dialogues, serious performances and humor. This movie is a sure watch for all; and for all anurag kashyap fans out there, its time to celebrate :-). Carrying out a  project like 'Gulaal' in bollywood is no doubt a very daunting task.. and, in my opinion, this movie has succeeded in all dimensions - music and lyrics were superb, the actors - the ones we know ( Kay Kay ) and the new faces (esp. Abhimanyu Rai ) have put  a superb performance all the way - the background of Rajasthan, the culture, pride, tone and sentiments of people blended so well with the story. I don't want to put down a spoiler here.. You should simply buy yourself a ticket and enjoy the real cinema - that you'll remember for a long time.

yet another great one from Anurag Sir. i think he is in this tremendous process of taking Hindi movie making to the next level. a lot of us have been waiting to see pure unexplored emotions being portrayed on screen , from every nook and corner of India ...from pan shop in the corner of a chwak , in a joint family , in hostels , highway hotels , in brothels , in covert activism , in the doodh wala's mind , in a prostitute's love , in the actions of a crazy literati , in the eyes of a "idiot"(for the earthly world) ...... to be very frank , i watch a movie to see characters ..both original and imaginary ... and Gulaal has offered distinct characters in plenty ... a lot of witty comic situation and wonderful lyrical approach in dialogs made the movie close to my heart .my favorite character is Prithvi Singh , played by Piyush Mistra ....i can watch this movie again again to watch Prithvi Singh ....

So the election fever is on, and how can our movies be far behind in depicting it? Come the election season and there ckmes one of the best movies ever made on student politics. I liked other ones as well like hasil and mere apne, but this one takes the crown.

Every character in the movie seemed so real, Kay Kay's acting as Dukey bana was mindblowing and so was Raja Singh Chaudhary's acting as Ransa, Raja's role was a very small one, biut leaves a great impact. But I dont think that the movie will do good on the box office, as this is one movie which is made out of sheer passion and not for the masses. Anurag Kashyap has become the master story teller lately with his two new flicks Dev D and now Gulaal.

I particularly liked Piyush Misra's role, his jokes, his sarcastic poem, and last but not the least the music and the lyrics of the movie are simply great. It has been a long time since I heard such good Hindi poetry anywhere. New comerAyesha Mohan and Jesse Randhawa has done a great job as well. Each and every actor's role is mind blowing in the movie. AK has proved again, that it is the eyes with which an actor connects with the viewers....

Overall a must watch for all the "movie buffs"

Was listening to Gulaal's music for a month now. Music was best I have listened in past 4-5 years, lyrics was totally different. "ranaji" was perfect song about whats happening in the world.

Coming back to movie. Its a serious political drama based on wanna be separatist revolutionaries wanting to establish  a separate Rajputana. Being tired of current political situation in the country. But their actions a not different from whats happening right now.

Student politics as the base for starting the political career is used heavily.

Democracy beer, Constitution Whiskey and Republic Brandy conveys how current politicians think about these concepts.

Some of the symbolism like 'Ardhanareshwar' along with Piyush Chavla described as the opponent inside. Only sane people who understood really whats happening.

Try to watch. First half is bit disconnected so wait for second half too if you go.

"...and Kings are left to serve coffee to the foreigners" a dialogue from the movie, made me instantly related to it. Cause recently I had been there, before 10 days, in Rajasthan, where this thing has happened. I have seen angst on their faces, how they must be feeling, people are roaming in their palaces, houses which are now museums or Hotels. And this is the storyline of Gulaal. Another installment of dark movie by the master of the genre: Anurag Kashyap. I absolutely have started loving his work, that now I can easily put him on top list of my fav directors.

Gulaal, is so much difficult movie. Difficult to understand, difficult to instantly accept or to relate even. And that's the way Anurag is tend to make his movie. And that's why I always liked his movies. He carries such a brilliant star cast in this, all little known faces but all Fabulous acts are being put together here. Kay Kay Menon, in the opening scene itself, gets us stuck like hell. He has just so powerful screen presence, I couldn't take my eyes off the screen. The way he speaks is just superb. He has the authority in his voice. Raja Singh Chaudhary, who plays a law student, turning into a monster [not really, but that's the word I want to use] is also well executed, casted character. Why not? He is the writer of the film itself, and only he can do such justice.

While Piyush Mishra, gets into multi faceted role here as brother of Dukkey Bana - Music, Lyrics and Acting. His act is fabulous. He sings short songs and recites best dialogues to push the movie forward. And I loved that. Pankaj Jha as Jadhwal, a hostel warden, was also good. The winner to me, is Abhimanyu Singh who plays Rananjay Singh. A son of erstwhile King of a Princely State. He is a modern day Rajput, more a kind of Rajasthani cowboy. I sincerely wish his role could be much longer.

Anurag Kashyap’s Gulaal finally made it to the theaters after a long hold – very little love and lots of power plays and violence. And if you look really hard in between corpses and gulaal, there is a revolution brewing too.

It has it’s high points but the movie is paced too slow and is too loosely woven to be absorbing.

On the upside, the music, the audacious dialogues, locales and the performance by particularly Deepak Dobriyal, Piyush Mishra and Kay Kay Menon, is brilliant. Kashyap uses stage actors and non mainstream actors which makes them more relatable.

Jesse Randhwa plays Anuja, a marijuana smoking teacher who is ragged (?) while Mahi Gill as Madhuri has two songs and a handful of scenes as Duki Banna’s mistress who lets him kick her around.

It kicks off well with the opening scene, with Duki Banna calling for a separate state of Rajputana, powerful and violent and shows the madness of extremism. But some scenes don’t add up, like when Dilip falls apart as his relationship with Kiran is a sham.

Dilip (Raj Singh Choudhary) leaves home to study law and moves in with Ransa (Abhimanyu Shekhar Singh) who goes out of his way to help Dilip when he is ragged. Duki Banna convinces Ransa to stand for the election opposite Kiran (Ayesha Mohan) and then ugly gets uglier. Ransa is killed and Dilip gets caught up in the political machinations. The election is rigged and Dilip becomes the General Secretary.

Kiran with her brother Karan’s encouragement goes out with Dilip and turns him against Duki Banna and she ends up taking over as General Secretary after which she starts working on seducing Duki Banna, who for a powerful revolutionary leader is quite easily seduced, by tears no less.

People shoot each other left, right and center and it becomes a question of who is playing who. In the end, the madness continues.
