'Hazaaron Khwahishein Aisi'- thousand desires as such !

'Hazaaron Khwahishein Aisi'

Set in the 1970’s - around 20 years after Indian Independence – ie.1947.

Have seen the movie from middle – but could make out what it wanted to convey.

There is this woman – pretty attractive to look at and has – as usual - many secret admirers. The scene where I have seen from is – YES the ‘locha’ scene – when this dame , as a young girl is exploring the world of Sex …outside wedlock!! ( Hey ! excuse me readers ! now don’t start saying things like ‘I have got a one track mind – only talking of sex, whores and pimps..’ – its not my fault that I started to watch the movie from this point onwards huh !)

Well, well – I understand that during the early 19th century – till, lets say 1947 or 1950 – when people had more or less decided to achieve ‘freedom’ or else die – they could / might have indulged in ‘sex’ out of wedlock. With women and men knowing that tomorrow might be their last day on earth – they probably thought ‘what harm can happen if they indulge in sex’ – so under such circumstances – it is understood that men and women indulged in such activities out of wedlock – for they had grown in utterly chaotic conditions.

But this is after – much after independence. Why did Indians fight for independence in the first place? To keep alive its rich and varied heritage, culture – which was speedily becoming ‘extinct’ and India was losing its USP – esp. Indian women – who were known for their chastity, dignity, loyalty etc. So the first thing that should have been done was to revive the moral and ethical values. One of the values is certainly ‘not to have ‘sex’ outside wedlock’ – applicable to both men and women equally.

But here we see a completely confused western plus eastern mix woman - Geeta! She is in love with Siddharth (hereinafter - Sid) – a revolutionist at heart who joins the naxalite movement and yearns to bring peace in Bihar. Vikram is the son of a poor man following Gandhian ideology. He secretly loves Geeta but Geeta does not respond. There is a party going on – probably the farewell party and Vikram sees Geeta having ‘sex’ with Sid in the Library …or somewhere which is not a bedroom at least and nor a hotel (remember I saw it from the middle) .

They part ways and Geeta gets married to a Civil Servant while she was in UK for further studies in Oxford. She meets her old flame again when she comes back to India and goes ahead – shamelessly - to continue her sexual escapades with Sid ! Vikram comes to know of it and has nothing to do about it. Vikram is now a successful ‘Manager’ kinda thing in the Govt. corridors and has got good connections in politics. He aims to become rich by hook or by crook since he had had a poor family background.

Geeta divorces her husband and joins Sid in his revolution in Bihar. She also produces a child ! gosh!! Under such circumstances how women went ahead for child birth is really amazing !! In one scene its shown that she goes to show Sid the baby but Sid was more interested in sex – so she keeps the baby on the dry grass and quenches his..her sexual thirst !! how sick !! I always thought that once you become parents – your priorities in life change….but I saw a completely different way of handling a baby !! She then sends away the baby so that she can focus on the revolution. Police raids occur and orders are passed to shoot Sid at sight ! Both Sid and Geeta are caught and they are put behind the bars where Geeta is gang raped – with Sid witnessing the scene – his hands tied !! Whether she was raped by the police or the local political fellas is not very clear in the movie – but its shown how corrupt the Police were…are still ?!One strange thing that I noticed about her reaction was that she was the least ‘unnerved’ by the gang rape episode that took place in front of her lover !…unlike in movies nowadays where girls are seen becoming insane – even reaching ‘mental asylums’ because of rape !Is it that she was used to sex…outside or inside wed lock … that it really did not matter to her who is doing what to her ?!

Vikram comes to know that Geeta is in jail and is being tortured. He tells it to her ex-husband and since he was in power – he goes and gets Geeta released.  But Geeta was more keen on spending her life with Sid. She meets Vikram and asks him to help her find Sid.  News comes that Sid tried to escape the jail and is dead. She is heart broken and leaves Vikram and goes away. Just then the news arrives that Sid is alive in some local hospital. Vikram goes to help him. But as luck would have it – Sid escapes with the help of his naxalite friends and poor Vikram gets beaten black and blue – basically the police had the plan to destroy his face beyond recognition so that he could be passed off as Sid and thus escape the wrath of their seniors!!  But help arrives at the nick of time and Vikram is saved but he loses his mental balance and becomes insane. Sid goes abroad to study medicine leaving Geeta and his child to fend for themselves – basically he couldn’t careless – Geeta had just been wasting her time on him !

In the last scene Geeta and Vikram are shown living in some ashram in a calm and peaceful place . This is the story of thousands desires as such !Basically all failed – no one could bring peace, tranquility, equality among fellow Indian citizens. We all live sadly ever after !!Life is definitely very harsh for 'bold' girls...sleeping out of wed lock i must say !!
