When I heard they were a making a movie on the book "One Night at the Call Centre", I knew I had to watch this movie. Come on, isn't it about time our Bollywood looked other than foreign movies for inspiration? Moreover, it is one of my fav books.Honestly, I had mixed expectations from the movie. On one hand Atul Agnihotri ( A not so great director with acting skills best left unsaid)was on the helm of things and on the other hand the screenplay and dialogues were being written by Chetan Bhagat( the author of the original book). Hello... is a tale about the events that happen one night at a call center. Told through the views of the protagonist, Shyam, it is a story of almost lost love, thwarted ambitions, absence of family affection, pressures of a patriarchal set up, and the work environment of a globalized office.Shyam is losing his girl friend because his career is going nowhere as he trudges his way around in a call center. His girl friend, Priyanka, is also an agent like him at the call canter who is about to be snatched by an NRI techno geek. There is also the aspiring model, Esha, who is hopping for the break that seems to be always already eluding her and the man about town, Vroom, who is into well, things. The housewife, Radhika, who is constantly at the receiving end of her mother-in-law and a beleaguered grandfather, Military Uncle, who has been barred from interacting with his grandchild make up the rest of the call agents who see their worlds crumbling around them as the decisions of right sizing are conveyed by Bakshi, the boss.It is a night when dreams will finally crumble. Or will it? For there is that call from God. Narrated as a tale within a tale as a beautiful woman meets the auteur narrator and promises him a story on the condition that he has to narrate it further. And boy did the movie disappoint. In fact, it sucks from first 10 minutes itself. The way Salman and Katrina interact makes you wonder ?yeh kya ho raha hai??.The whole thing seems so farce and forced. And that?s the problem, often things seem so in the movie. Hardly anything seemed real or you could relate with(one of the main plus points of the book). The problem seemed in both direction and writing.(I expected better from Mr.Bhagat) In fact there are one corny dialogues after the other. Just check this ? When Priyanka reveals her marriage plans and Shyam walks away disappointed, Esha exclaims ?Great news.?.To which Vroom responds ?Great news aur breaking news mein fark hota hai.?Man! When Katrina switches on her laptop, Sallu asks( without checking the laptop)? You are checking your mails, huh??(err ? is that the only purpose people use their laptops for?)She looks up,smiles and after few seconds says ?emails?(Wow, the most intelligent answer I have ever heard). The movies gets better in the latter portions as the story catches up and things begin to happen. But still direction leaves a lot desired in these parts too. Quite a few scenes could have been handle better. Shyam?s evil conscience, revealing boss? real plans, Esha takling about her life, etc either don?t convince or seem too sudden. Comong to performances, Sohail,Sharmaan and Esha do a decent job. Gul doesn?t convince and could have given a little more life in her potrayal(or maybe it was just bad direction). And seriously I cant believe anyone actually thought of Amrita as an ideal Indian bahu. The sets with red and orange walls look quite out of place. This movie is a perfect example of a good story handled amatuerishly. |

What happens when a good material is given in the hands of an incompetent filmmaker? To find an answer to this question watch Hello adapted from Chetan Bhagats 2nd bestseller novel ‘One night at the call centre’ & directed by Atul Agnihotri. this movie is completely a waste of good story. I hade read One night….a few years back & found it extremely fast paced & character ridden script with some superb humour , I thought that this story of 6 call centre agents facing different problems & finally finding a solution via a telephone from God is an interesting concept & can be transformed into a good popcorn entertainment movie by even a half decent filmmaker. Sadly Atul Agnihotri doesn’t even get the half decent position as he makes a tasteless khichdi in the name of a movie . all the humour & sophistication that the novel had was changed into a B-grade melodramatic movie like the humorous altercations between Vroom & an American client is changed into an unnecessary & forced patriotic one which looks completely fake. There are so many untied & unexplained stuff in the movie that one who might not have read the novel will suddenly get confused &one who has read & adored it like me will sulk at the removal of some important moments & the tackiness of the movie . Moments like Shyams intro which is supposed to be in a wedding & shows his position in the family as a loser is replaced by a filmy maa & a meddling kid . this doesn’t give the necessary graph to the character as also is the case with Military uncle who is shown as a friendly guy from the beginning as opposed to being grumpy towards the new generation in the novel Priyanka as some important scenes like the flashback in the restaurant where she gives a mouthful to a family cribbing about having daughters is removed , Vrooms love for biking is evident only in the climax , the same is the case with esha & Radhika . none of the characters are properly explained in the movie as if the screenplay writers were in a hurry to finish the movie in a specified time . add to this is the tacky direction of Atul .the very beginning is an example of that as he fails to create an aura of mystery round Katrinas character which should have set the movie in the right direction.add to that is the sloppy editng as none of the flashback scenes are properly integrated in the movie Yes there are a couple of good things here & there , the bathroom scene between Sharman & Sohail as well as the antar aatma of Sharman are superbly done with & should have been added more of. but these moments are few & far between . add to this are the choie of actors in some roles . Ishhha & Amrita are miscast , dalip tahil overacts as if he is acting in a play & there is Suresh Menon who should take away the most irritating performance award for sure . Dialouges are bad in the emotional scenes & why does god sound like B.R.Chopras maharabata s god . the songs come at the wrong time except for the daler one which is quiet peppy & the Salman one which is quite popular. Inspite of all this if there is one thing that saves this tacky movie and turn it into a movie that deserves a Rammies award is one actor Sharman Joshi . he is a great talent who carries the movie entirely on his shoulder , just look at the scene where he is posing as the evil antaraatma & u know u r watching an exceptional talent . he is well aided by Sohail khan & gul panag . but sadly this cannot save the movie as the movie is a complete disappointment from what one expected . maybe Mr Bhagat u should have stayed on with rohan sipppy . please don’t make the same mistake with 3 mistakes…… At the end of it one cane say that hello is an opportunity lost to make a movie that could have been so much more from what it has turned out to be thanks to poor direction. |

Director Atul Agnihotri roped in composer duos Sajid-Wajid and Salim-Suleiman to compose the music for his film, which is a screen adaptation of Chetan Bhagat's second bestseller, "One Night @ the Call Center". But the final outcome is not so impressive. The album starts with the loud number "Karle baby dance wance". The song is not appealing despite the fact that Daler Mehndi is crooning it. Accompanying him is Sunidhi Chauhan and her rendition is also average. The worst are lyrics, courtesy Jalees Sherwani.
"Rab ka banda" is completely different from "Karle baby...". The song is sung by accomplished and noteworthy singers like Sonu Nigam and Zubin and Sunidhi Chauhan. It is a philosophical track Jalees lyrics connect with the theme, but the music isn't good enough to make it a chartbuster.
A romantic piece comes in the form of "Mitwa re". In this slow and soft number, synthesizer, the flute and tambourine are used throughout and that gives it a slight rustic touch. While the lyrics are quite average, there's nothing outstanding about the rendition by Shaan, Wajid and Sadhna Sargam.
"Bang bang bang" is an out and out Wajid song. Giving it a very concert-like feel, the composers of this track have made it seem like a 'larger-than-life' composition.
"Caravan", as the title suggests, is a song about the journey of life and Jalees' meaningful lyrics make it all the more appealing. Noted Pakistani singer Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan renders it. Yet, one gets the feeling that there's still something missing in the number or, rather, there could have been an improvement somewhere.
"Hello", which is being used as a promotional song, has a host of singers on board including Wajid, Ishq Bector, Tim, Herchelle, Merlin and Suzie Q. But it is not a very happening number. The "Hello" album lacks a lot and isn't presented too well for masses to download any song, leave alone buying the entire CD or cassette.

It is a night when dreams will finally crumble. Or will it? For there is that call from God. Narrated as a tale within a tale as a beautiful woman meets the auteur narrator and promises him a story on the condition that he has to narrate it further, Hello, based on Chetan Bhaqat`s one night @ the call Center, is the one remarkable story from Tales from a Thousand and One globalizing, urban, Indian Nights. |

Chetan bhagat, who was on the verge of the pocketing another trailblazer title of a IITian-banker-turned-story writer-turned-scriptwriter has finally stumbled upon the up going graph,,,all coz of not so tight direction and also not so divine story... YEs thats true the story which makes powerful impact while reading in a cozy corner during one afternoon definately turns into a story full of some times slack and sometimes hilarious ( sarcasm intended) episodes . The story is of a wannabe team leader of the call-centre group Shyam (Sharman Joshi) who has recently broken off with colleague Priyanka (Gul Panag) who is on the verge of marrying an NRI.On the other hand second hero Varun (Sohail Khan) has a crush on ambitious Esha (Isha Koppikar) who is another wannabewho wants to make it big in the fashion world. Radhika (Amrita Arora) is a battered housewife and Military Uncle (Sharat Saxena) is estranged from his US-settled son. The common point of interest apart from dances in disc is their hatred for their boss Bakshi (Dalip Tahil) who again is in a another trouble as he has got notice to sack overstaffed office.
Then one night they meet with an accident and while dangling for life, they get a call from God, and the call starts rolling the wheels of fortune with enough divine preaching on ethics, morals, self-confidence, a la " May Samay Hoon " style . The change starts happening and all ends well. The characters of the movie are etched as common as next door BPO workers,, i was in delhi and i can identify Esha and Radhika very well ,,the music i liked !! bang bang i love when not distracted by waxed salman's chest. The dialogues are " cheatanish"and the script is week. Atul needs polishing .. cant match to Abhishek Kapoor and A. Tyrewala The star i will give is two point something.... |
