‘The music within’ is an apt tag line for ‘Jashnn’ for it effectively showcases the inner struggle of an aspirant who grapples with the demons of his personal life as he struggles along the thorny path to fame. The film revolves around Akash Verma, a struggling musician who wants to have the world applauding his talent. He and his sister live in their parent’s house, but the money to run it comes from a rich businessman Aman Bajaj, who ‘keeps’ his sister. Unhappy as he is with the treatment meted out to his sister, he incurs the wrath of Aman when it is discovered that Akash is dating Aman’s sister. A stubborn Akash refuses to let go of his love despite a warning given to both siblings. A vengeful Aman decides to do whatever he can to snuff out Akash’s career aspirations. The plot revolves around the effect of these changes in the lives of the principal characters and on whether Akash can fulfill his aspirations. ‘Jashnn’ is an emotionally intense film. Directors Raksha Mistry and Hasnain Hyderabadwala have given it a stark feel to the extent that a section of the audience may even feel disturbed by the goings on. It does have its ‘Escape to Bollywood’ moments from time to time, but overall it comes across as a film that sincerely explores the psyche of the protagonist as he goes through his struggles. It does have story writer Mahesh Bhatt’s recurring theme of the protagonist being linked to an ‘other woman’. Earlier it was a son. This time it is a brother. A word of appreciation for Adhyayan Suman. He is a talented actor with raw intensity combined with sensitivity that can help him switch to any genre of film. With some work on his diction and posture, he can become a top notch actor. He could also have prepared for the role better by not sticking to playing G major even when he is supposed to be playing a lead riff. Shahana Goswami as the sister delivers another strong performance post ‘Rock On!’ in a role that is a departure from the ‘pure’/’impure’ treatment that Hindi movies tend to give to the female characters. She is real. Humayun Saeed as the vengeful rich man is all subdued menace. A commendable performance. The weak link is Anjana Sukhani. She is very awkward and uncomfortable on screen and seems to stand out for the wrong reasons in an otherwise talented cast. A better casting effort could have helped the film further. One does feel that towards the end, the story tries to make up for all the darkness and drudgery of the principal characters with the redemption theme whereas a more realistic ending would have been in keeping with the core of the film. Nevertheless ‘Jashnn’ is worth watching for people who want to see a sincere attempt at narrating a good story with substance. It does not disappoint. |

Vishesh Films and Bhatt brothers are known for their successful track record of intense and musical love stories. But their latest movie "Jashnn" does not have the content to impress, as expected from the reputed production house. The movie, which falls in the same genre of "Rock On", has got a very routine & uninspiring treatment given by the director duo Hasnain-Raksha. And therefore has nothing new or surprising in the offering for the viewers.
From the first scene itself, you can sense that this is a story of a not so rich, wannabe singer who will fall in love with a wealthy girl. But still, since the movie comes from the Bhatt banner, one keeps waiting for some unpredictable sub plots to unfold on the screen. Sadly, nothing happens, and the movie goes on & on with many lifeless sequences, shot in a usual way. In other words, the film lacks the high excitement level, required for an intense musical love story (especially if coming from the Bhatts).
In real terms, apart from some well acted emotional scenes, the movie fails to hold your interest both in pre and post interval segments. The first half is the same, as seen in several love stories before, where the love blossoms between a rich girl and a struggling boy. And the second half, is even more tiring with many unwanted and lengthy scenes asking for a better edit. Unlike their (Vishesh Films) previous hits, "Jashnn" also has a completely uninspiring climax showing a lackluster contest being won by the hero in a very jaded style. So, content wise, the movie scores too low at its entertainment quotient and has no unique special point to mention.
However, performance wise it has a brighter side, with a few well written and brilliantly acted scenes between Adhyayan Suman & Shahana Goswami playing brother and sister in the movie. Their powerful confrontation dialogues make you remember the great intensity seen in the old & famous masterpieces from Mahesh Bhatt. And this is the only worth mentioning point of an otherwise unentertaining movie coming from the Bhatt camp. Adhyayan Suman shows the spark, but only in a few particular scenes. Hence, he still has to work hard to score a perfect 10. Anjana Sukhani looks cute and fresh, giving her best to a routine role. Humayun Saeed is a complete surprise delivering an unexpectedly fine act. But the best one again comes from Shahana Goswami, who is simply superb and growing better with every new film of her.
In the music department too, "Jashnn" fails to make a stronger impact as expected. With only one or two worth listening songs, it does not have the right tracks required for a musical love story. And the same can be said about its cinematography, which is just fine and normal. But here I will surely like to mention a major flaw in the script and direction, observed towards the climax. Throughout the movie, Adhyayan is shown to be having a musical band with 3 more friends. But strangely, in the climax contest, he decides to perform a solo song, keeping all his three band members aside. Even if he arrived late in the contest, how could he perform a solo number simply ignoring his other 3 members of the band, selfishly? That was indeed a great thought by the writer and director for their climax.
Summing up, if you go by the reputation of "Vishesh Films", then "Jashnn" is surely a disappointment, with only one silver lining in the black clouds and that's Shahana Goswami's performance.

Akash Verma (Adhyayan Suman), a wannabe singer lives off his elder sister Nisha (Shahana Goswami), the mistress of a rich businessman Aman Bajaj (Humayun Saeed). He falls in love with Sara (Anjana Sukhani), Aman's sister and this leads to some confrontations between Akash, Aman and Nisha. Akash leaves Nisha's home to prove himself. The rest of the movie is about his trials and tribulations in trying to do that. The movie has one of the worst screenplays ever and is filled with horrible scenes like the one where Aman makes Akash write 'I am Sorry' on a post it note and you wonder if he should have made him write that 100 times. The characters behave ridiculously and there is no logic. Sara's friend just turns up with a gun asking Akash to leave her, Akash's friends ask him to choose Sara or them when they just created a demo Cd thanks to her. Seeing the struggle the guy goes through you wonder if it is set in present times when you have so many singing shows on TV. He does get on a TV show in the end but why could his friends not try to get on a TV show before. The movie has such inane dialogues like 'Zillat ki itni baarish huvi hai ke hum kuch dhul chuke hain'. The music is the only good thing in the movie and it’s sad that the songs have been wasted in a ridiculous movie like this.

A badly overcooked dish of the same recipe that has been used unceremoniously over the last two decades is how one can describe this movie. There’s the boy (Adhyayan Suman) with a dream of becoming a musician, who doesn’t actually work towards achieving it, till half the movie is over; and not until he’s so emotionally strung by his sister’s (Shahana Goswami) never ending, abusive relationship with a rich married businessman (Humayun Saeed). This man pays all their bills and just so happens to be the elder brother of the boy’s love interest (Anjana Sukhani). To see for yourself, whether this stereotypical plot has changed even a miniscule amount over the last few generations, the movie is worth a watch. Jashn comes to an end when our sad but brave, love-sick hero wins the ‘Great Indian Music Competition’ and brings the villain and many others to tears with his moving song. The movie manages to brush many sides of unrealism in addition to bad acting. Only in a movie such as this can one get to see a flat broke couple convert a garage to a beautifully furnished home with all the modern amenities, and then sell jewellery to make a demo cd. Also how a person is always seen in fresh clothes the morning after storming out of one’s house the night before, fails to surprise the viewer after half the movie. The romantic scenes between Adhyayan Suman and Anjana Sukhani have been portrayed in a less than mediocre fashion. The cast compliments the poor story line. Adhyayan Suman plays a rather unconvincing role of a distraught brother/failing musician in love. Whereas Anjana Sukhani leaves the audience confused; whether she is rich, spoilt and two-timing or humble, single and deeply in love remains a mystery till the latter half of the movie. Shahana Goswami plays her character well, for the most part. Humayun Saeed, the villain of our tale, is despicable in his role as a good villain should be, till he cries like a baby in the end. The directors Raksha Mistry, Hasnain Hyderabadwala could’ve definitely done a better job. If your tolerance to bad movies is high and if you can’t find absolutely anything else to do with your time, Jashn is the movie for you, else I would really suggest you not watch it. |

READ FULL REVIEW AT MY BLOG : CLICK HERE. Album starts with a soft note later turning into crooning of KK. Yeah, he's here. So get ready for a fabulous track. 'Nazarein Karam' is a trademark KK song, with some fast beats and background vocals by Shreya. An instantly likable song with equally addictive words. Nice to humm around. Lyrics are by Kumaar which has some really good lines.
Next up is 'Aaya Re' which starts off with one can easily identify as a concert song. A song which reminds most of 'star launches' from past. Again, KK in his own style, and some funky beats makes this track fun. And with some electric guitar sprinkled over, I would say Just Go For It - play it loud. Both of this tracks are composed by Sharib-Toshi, the new guys has given instant hit tracks in their debut album. Good going.
Music stays for a while, when 'Dard-e-tanhai' takes over the album. Written-Composed and Sung (!!!) by Nouman Javaid. A lonesome track which has some typical yet effective words. The track goes at high pitch with Guitar strings and the track concludes fantastically.
After such different tracks, here comes a traditional 'love song' by Shaan and Shreya Ghoshal. 'Tere Bin' reminds me of Teri iss baat ne [Kalyug]. Which has similar cute, love all over the track. The duo sings is so smoothly and makes a very nice guest track by Sandesh Shandilya. [such an underrated guy!!] Words are by Neelesh Misra.
I was really surprised at next track. 'Main Chala'. After listening to it, I got up and checked CD cover, if there is anything wrong. But no,'it is' composed-written-SUNG by Nouman Javaid. Because the track is so much 'LUCKY ALI' kinda. I can identify each string, each thehrav in Nouman's voice so so similar to Lucky. And that actually is a complement for Nouman. In his debut, he sounds so mature. The track is an Unplugged one. With beautiful strings, talking about rise and fall of self. Making me expecting something outta movie.
The only glitch in the album is 'Aish Karle'. Composed and sung by Sharib-Toshi. Its all about doing fun, about youth and partying. A peppy track but not 'in line' with all other tracks listed earlier. But thats okay with me, cause after all, its a fun one. From Lyrics, I can see it must be fun on screen.
Next two tracks are remix of Dard-E-Tanhai and Nazarein Karam, which keeps fun going. And a different version of Dard-E-Tanhai as 'Meri Tanhai', yet another unplugged version. Again a good listen. |
