Deepa Mehta, with the movie Komagata Maru, is bringing to the big screen a real life incident about immigrants.
In 1914, the steamship Komagata Maru sailed from Hong Kong to Vancouver, with 354 passengers on board. Their attempts to immigrate to Canada were unsuccessful and the ship returned to India where some of the passengers died following an encounter with the police.
Akshay Kumar essays the role of a Sardarji who was one of the immigrants on the ship.
