Never bite more than you can chew

Some wise man said sometime back, "Never bite more than you can chew." Sudhir Mishra probably did not hear of this, otherwise his film could have been a masterpiece. It could even qualify for screenings in film academies for teaching students about film making during 50s and 60s. The film actually takes you that era with ease. The only problem with this film is that the director has tried to show too much. He has actually tried to cover entire film industry of 50s and 60s with the help of 5-6 lead characters, which I think is very difficult. He actually succeeds, but in pieces.

The story revolves around Zafar (a budding author/scriptwriter turned director), Nikhat (struggling actress turned star), Prem Kumar (super star), Khosa (producer), Ratnabala (star), Shyamal (AD turned star secretary turned producer), Noni Da (director) and Ravinder (rising star). The whole story revolves around all these characters. I actually got confused, if it was primarily the story of entire film industry or about Zafar and Nikhat. The director has shown all the possible combinations of relationships between the lead characters Zafar, Nikhat and Prem Kumar. At some point of time it starts becoming so complicated that you actually get confused that what these guys really want. The story starts with Nikhat meeting Prem Kumar, and Prem Kumar helping her in her career. During shooting of a film, Nikhat meets Jafar and both fall for each other. But for Nikhat's career it's important to stay with Prem Kumar. Finally they both decide to marry but they don't, again it's career or something else, you don't clearly understand. Nikhat is not able to do Zafar's first directorial venture, and Zafar is not able to handle this fact. He does his movie with Ratnabala and the movie is a flop. Heartbroken Zafar disappears from Mumbai. He comes back again and makes the best movie of his and Nikhat's filmy career "Khoya Khoya Chand", which is actually based on real life story of Zafar.

The movie actually takes you to the 50's thanks to the way it is shot and the set design. All the actors have done good job. Shiney Ahuja has to really learn how to act in sad scenes. Soha Ali Khan looks cute. Editor has probably done overtime for this movie, because the scenes seem to end and start abruptly some times. Some dialogs are really witty like the scene when Prem Kumar finds out about Zafar and Nikhat's relationship. The scene I liked most was where Nikhat and Zafar throw stones at the Producer's house, whom she met at the age of 14. The direction sometimes lack the old Sudhir Mishra of Is Raat Ki Subah Nahi and Hazaaron Khwahishein Aisi. The story could also have been more gripping, if they would have concentrated on one of the relationships and tried to make it less complicated for the audience. Music is really good and I liked all the songs. Shantanu Moitra-Swanand Kirkire combination does it again. Overall I would rate this movie as 6 out of 10.

"use, throw and reuse" or just being human?...

first things first, i could not decide if i liked the movie and recommend it to others :-), so perhaps go watch it for yourself and decide :-)... its a story of characters and they are humans who are bound to make some mistakes... they have desires, aspirations, greed and they can lose their integrity at times... they are down at times and need help...

the movie is set in bollywood industry of 70s, perhaps trying to showcase how it used to work but i am not sure if the focus of the movie was that... to me it appeared its trying to show lives of some people and how their relation keeps changing and story evolves... soha is a upcoming actress who is trying to get into bollywood, rajat kapur is the superstar premkumar and notices her, she gets work on his recommendation but in return she has to get physical with him and she herself is pretty aware of such practices... shiney is a writer who gets to meet rajat on recommendation of vinay pathak... things take off for shiney and he also starts getting work... now rajat's marriage is fixed with dipanita and for some strange enough reasons soha is upset (though there was never love between the two)... she finds comfort with shiney... they get physical and fall in love... now when this news is out rajat tries to show his muscle but they manage to hold their ground... soha becomes a big star herself... shiney and soha plan to marry but some family issues makes soha work more and meanwhile shiney also decides to turn director... then trouble between the two starts when shiney is not able to get dates of soha for his movie... they have clashes... shiney's film goes flop and for her next film he almost asks soha to give favor to the producer... things dont work out between the two and shiney leaves... when he comes back after some time, soha has taken to drinking, doing b-grade films, is down wrt health... soha is staying with vinay pathak... shiney has a movie script which is based on his own life and soha and rajat work in that (incidentally that movie is called khoya khoya chand and the setting is in dance industry and not bollywood, kind of confirming my belief that the movie is more about humans and power than bollywood in 70s :-)...

overall the movie is largely heavy except some dialogues here and there which manage laughs... there are couple of things which i just could not get though... shiney's father had 4 wives and had rather "rangeen" personality, shiney is upset with him and when he was about to die, he asked for forgiveness, shiney did not forgive him... apparently that thing hounds him but somehow i fail to see the connection missing from rest of the story... if the message from that episode was that shiney should have said yes and told him that he loved his father, then when he returns back even then he does not express this to soha, i.e. whatever happened is gone and i still love you and want you... its soha who says that... secondly soha expecting rajat to marry her was also not clear.. there was no love... then she herself was into such situations since she was 14...

acting wise decent performances by everyone... songs are okay, title track is good...

KKC is  story about Nikhat(Soha Ali Khan) and her entry into bollywood. The tale starts from her teens - how she has a troubled childhood, how she is cajoled by her mom to be in movies. Its pretty interesting and fast moving. There are several independent figures like Prem(Rajat,Reigning superstar); Vinay Phatak,  Khosa (a typical Film producer), Ratanbala (Reigning star actress), Zafar(shiney) - upcoming script writer. Each one of them has an interesting story. Of course the stories mingle in the character's love and work life. Portrayal of some of the aspects of life is pretty neat - how people use others to forge his/her goals, and how this is fine to everyone!!; how people move on .. . The movie continues to showcase how soha is used by others(prem, zafar, her mom/step-dad,first producer), and how she uses others. Zafar is soha's main love interest and there (obviously) tensions between them over their career paths. Lots of ups/downs in the movie - but in the end zafar makes a blockbuster with nikhat .....

The first half is interesting, but movie becomes little expected and sluggish in the second half.

Acting wise - everyone was good. rajat, soha, ratnabala, khosa(producer). Somehow I dont like shiney that much :). Film has good actors. Characterization of each individual is  good - the producer, the stars , the strugglers - all of them are potrayed in apt terms. Screenplay is nice too. Director created the era of 60s pretty nicely - Songs, Sets, Costumes, Dialogue - all of these create a different era altogether- amazing feat.

Songs are pretty neat, and fit in nicely with the movie.

Overall, I would give it 3.5 stars. its watchable once. I am not rating it too high because I find the second half of story sluggish and little inconsistent.
