"Agar kuchh accha karne me daag lag jate hain, to daag acche hain." (borrowed from "Daag Acche Hain" campaign of Surf Excel) should have been the concluding line of the movie. That was the only conclusion after watching 3 hour long ad campaign, unfortunately the product YRF chose to endorse was Lux , not Surf. I am not sure how many women across India will buy Lux, if they come to know that they will look like Konkana SenSharma (no offense, she is a great actor, but that's not the face someone would choose to model for a beauty soap) after using this beauty soap.
Oops, I dragged a bit from the objective. Well, the movie is about two young girls Vibhavari (Rani) and Shubhavari (Konkana), living in Banaras with their parents (Anupam Kher and Jaya Bacchan). The movie starts with introducing the two sisters with a song "hum to aise hain bhaiya". What am I doing? Doesn't everyone already know the story. Will summarize for the ignorant ones. To financially support her family the elder sister becomes a high profile escort serving to 5 star clients staying in 5 star hotels in Mumbai. (is entering this highly competitive business that easy?)
I learned one thing about female oriented films, i.e. all the male characters in such movies are either losers (Anupam Kher), haramkhor (Sushant Singh, Tinu Anand, Harsh Chhaya) or not important (Abhishek Bacchan, Kunal Kapoor). Konkana has acted beautifully in a role, which is suffering from a decease called weak characterization. Her character is so dumb that she is never aware of the financial condition of the family, even though she was living in the same home. (yaar kisi hostel me hi rakh dete use) This in not the only thing, there are so many weak spots in the movie and the biggest one is the story. The story has been used so many times in our movies and in so many forms that everyone knew about the next scene before it even played on screen. Couldn't understand the blackmailing angle. Why have irrelevant scenes in the movie just to enhance the plight of the lead character? (ek ladki ke galat decision ko justify karne ke liye kitne logon ko bura dikhaoge) Some props are so out of place that you start wondering, what was in director's mind when he decided to use such props. Like the telephone booth in front of CST station, the phone in that telephone booth (it was not one rupee coin one, may be Indian Telcos have decided to provide free calling facility for girls under distress), the old phone with round dialer in a Mumbai flat (who uses those, unless someone is interested in antiques).
This time Sarkar fails big time in telling the story or is that YashRaj effect. You can see the parineeta director only when the story stays in Banaras, once it reaches Mumbai, the director is lost. Except for the first and last songs all other are forced into the story. In the end, don't watch this film and apni chunari me daag lagne se bacha lo (mere kapdon me to itne daag lag gaye hain ki ab log ise naya fashion samajh ke maf kar dete hain). |

Laaga Chunri main daag Cons: A movie promoting temporary ‘whoredom’ to girls in order to rope in rich & handsome grooms !It’s a fairy tale come true – like Cinderella or Rapunzel meeting their handsome Prince after a whole lot of ordeals in life ! Pros: Women residing in Mumbai (Maharashtra) must be very good, sober, chaste and decent – thus they have the biggest slum - Dharvi – and are readily living under the most unhygienic and deplorable conditions but are happy with their dignified life style. For according to this movie , a whorish woman can earn up to Rs.30,000 in two hours if she just agrees to part with her modesty !! Points to ponder : Father is an honest employee who refuses to sign false documents and thus is deprived of his pension – the sole source of income for the family. Family consists of one wife and two daughters. Mother takes over and makes both ends meet by sewing petticoats. Father, in the mean time, buys lottery tickets ..and wastes money basically – this kind of gambling was I guess alright for the otherwise honest man – this means he was a loser as a man and as a husband – for he was of no help to his wife. Elder daughter- Rani- knew stitching and embroidery(as she herself mentioned in the Bio-data) but never came forward to help her mother and even grow their small time business by doing embroidery work on blouses etc. Younger daughter , Konkona was shown as an utterly dumb girl who is blissfully unaware of the status of home front – since she is young so the family members censor all the gory details of their mundane life from her – and are even successful in doing so !! Rani decides to go to Mumbai to fetch some financial support for her family. She tries her luck in Beauty parlors – leaves it for maybe she found it below her dignity to sweep floors and do pedicure for customers, joins a departmental store but is ousted for she could not understand or speak English !Tries to become a movie assistant but one has to move ones butt real fast – so she was kicked out from there as well. At last she reaches a Call Center and happens to met a debauch married male who promises to give her the job if she agrees to sleep with him ! She rings up her mother – who was very busy running helter-skelter collecting money to attend to her hubby’s sudden heart attack. His heart was attacked upon hearing that they will have to vacate the house btw. Rani tells her mother that she wants to come back for the people here in Mumbai are very cheap – but her mother denies and says that she better not come back and ask her for money instead. She decides to sleep with the debauch dog after all. The debauch dog devours her cherry and then denies her any job but offers her Rs.10,000/- for 2 hours of quicky session !(so you see now folks? Rickshaw pullers, taxi drivers, salesmen, other unemployed men – are men who stand in scorching sun for customers and earn maybe less than Rs.200/- per day but remember they also get to see such movies and know that females make money by just spreading their legs in an AC room and draw Rs.10,000/- per 2 hours ! thus in their frustration they rape anyone they see on the streets and are branded as criminals..no one is born a criminal – they are made so by this contradictory society!!) Later with the help of a bold female, she becomes a kept of a rich Industrialist – who introduces her among his clients as Event Manager – but her job was to actually manage the libido of his clients. Thus she makes a whole lot of money and starts sending it to her parents – only her mother knew what she was doing, her father and sister were blissfully unaware of her business. Only an absolute dumb idiot will not realize this – which her father – played by Anupam Kher- probably was - for its not possible for a non-english speaking, unsmart and uncouth paan chewing girl from Banaras to earn such exorbitantly high amount of money in a matter of a couple of months ! She meets Abhishek Bachchan – another rich Industrialist – who falls for her. In the mean time Konkona comes to Mumbai as a Mgmt trainee in an advt. Company. She falls in love with a complete bloke – a rich creative Director – who is actually Abhishek’s brother. In the last scene , Abhishek proposes Rani but she tells him that she is a Prostitute. He said that he knew it from day one but it did not really matter to him. They also tie the knot !! FAQ: How come the rich Industrialist did not mind accepting a ‘whore’ as his legally wedded wife? Ans. There are mostly 2 kinds of males (irrespective of poor or rich or middle class)- one is utterly dumb and the other is utterly shrewd and clever. Dumb males can marry just anyone – they don’t realize what they are going for- any female who gives them a wee bit of importance or feeds their ego or initiates him into the world of sex..he falls at her feet and start licking it and continues doing so for the rest of his life! Shrewd ones are those who purposely accept such whorish females as their life partners so that they can lead a ‘ You are not okay, I am not okay’ life – both will happily hump outside wedlock and no one will interfere in each others’ sex life ! Thus in future when -lets say Rani becomes fat and ugly after delivering 2-3 kids, Abhi can easily and merrily hump other Event Managers or private Secretaries without Rani raising her voice – for she will always be a subservient maid to Abhi for having accepted her in the first place – in spite of her stained Chunari….. So folks – soon we’ll see many girls jumping to stain their ‘chunaris’ for after all at the end they will manage a good looking and rich husband …the reason of their birth- as taught to them through so many fairy tales and cheap silhouette romance chic lits… |

I didn’t like the ending of this film, it wasn’t anywhere near relaity. Not all bad beginnings end in a fairytale story but this film did. How many families do you know who would accept the fact that their daughter is a prostitute and be acceptable? How many men from respectable families have you known who are not bothered about a prostitutes past, present or future and willing to accept them into their family with open arms? Does our society accept a prostitue with open arms and allow her to live with her head held high in society? Also I think that this film sends out the wrong message to young vulnerable girls showing them that when times get hard you can use you body to your advantage and that it is acceptable by family and society. Is this really how the real world views it? There are other means to earn a living, what about the women who cook, clean, wash, iron, etc in peoples households to feed their families are they not managing without selling their bodies? |

If they were trying to emphsise on some kind of women empowerment by depicting rani as doing what sons cant do ,that is flesh trade and trade flesh for living; they failed miserably. The movie smells of moth balls. It is really like an exorbitantly priced, beautiful but old and unwearable banarsi saree among the clouds of chiffons and whispers of georgette. The plot is ancient and very predictable. The treatment is a good effort on part of director and cinematographer. The cast was a dream cast yet it was not exploited properly . Jaya is an avatar of nirupa roy and anupam kher is A K hangal next gen. The moth balled parents who push daughter to become ravishing call girl. Heroes r not heroes in true sense but merely there for its sake..... Rani as usual is brilliant cant comment about abhishek. Kunal tried to prove himself in this star studded film. Watch this movie only for Konkana , she is delightfully wonderful.Emote well and doesnt look out of place in the movie which was really meant for rani.Pradeep sarkars movie is a delight to eyes but cant say about logic department. |

This is a movie about a lower middle class, less educated girl gets dragged into flash trade to get her family out of terrible financial problems. After seeing financial problem in her home back in beautiful city of Banaras, Rani deicides to go to the "Dream city" for most "Aamchi Mumbai". Because of her not so good educational background and her need, some guy takes her advantage by making a false promise of job. This breaks Rani but one her friend gives her the strength to see her need and get into becoming an escort. Movie dragged a bit here. Conditions at Rani's home improves and movies proceeds ,.. I was waiting for usual twists in the movie but none came ... Music was ok ( It actually means not impressive ... ) Sets and locations were realastic and Yash Chopra takes you for a ride to Switzarland. I think Mujra by Hema Malini set the tone of the movie. Overall movie was ok. |

Laaga chunari mei daag is story of two sisters ( rani & konkana) in banaras, how rani goes to bbay because of financial problems, and then cuz of circumstances she has to be become a call girl. Neaty showcases the sentimental sides of such a cicumstance .. Pretty simple story, - I liked it. The only twist was there was no twist in it Acting wise - movie has seasoned actors - rani, konkana, anupam kher, jaya - so as expected good acting.. kunal kapoor's acting was little lousy though. Movie gets little slow in between - especially in the beginning whey they are showing the financial problems of rani and her family .. Hema malini's mujra dance was unwarranted.. final take - its watchable once .. |
