Left in the care of an alcoholic Gangu Ganpat (Shreeram Lagoo), young Heera, who named himself after a stray dog, wrestles with life in his young age.He was born as the illegitimate son of an industrialist (Amjad Khan) and a professional singer (Rakhee).
Years later, now a young man (Amitabh Bachchan), he works for Mahendar Singh (Ranjeet) to work in his estate .Mahendra Singh is none other then his own step brother but Heera is completely unaware of this fact.
There, he meets his father and the industrialist's legally wedded wife. In due course, Vijay wins everyone's admiration. Meanwhile he falls in love with a pretty girl named Mohini.
Heera is now determined to find out who his parents are, and the only one who can help him is the elusive, alcohol-induced and incoherent Gangu Ganpat.
What will be the consequence when he finds out who his father is?
