To know my take on other bollywood masala flicks, visit http://blogs.ibibo.com/bollyfatka The Plot: Aftermath of another illfated day of Mumbai – the day was 11th July 2006 when 7 bomb blast shattered the life line of Mumbai local trains. Plot is sensitive and genuine it traces the life of five individual. Thomas: A South Indian ‘Chaiwala’ is ill-treated by riches. He has urge of vengeance which he fulfills by unusual manner. Nikhil: Established software engineer, travels by local train to help the environment who witnesses the blast which changes his entire belief and doubts his patriotism. Rupali: A well-known TV reporter who goes all out of the way to catch the grief of people to make sensational news for her channel. But 11th July makes herself sensational news to increase the TRP of the channel. Suresh: Hard code Hindu who thinks each and every Muslim is terrorist including France footballer Zinedine Zidane Kadam: Young fierce constable and his journey with old and retiring constable Tukaram Patil. Ratings: **** (4 star) { One is missing as few questions are unanswered in the story telling } Screenplays: Natural. Each scene directed by Nishikant Kamat witnessed the real Mumbaikar. Looks like Mumbai is in his veins. He used first 25 minutes effectively to depict the each character. He is brilliant in establishing each of them just in 5 minutes. I do not want to mention any particular screenplay here as each scene is so important to unfold the five various stories. I want all of you to watch it and understand the meaning of each screenplay because its expressions that speaks and not the actors. Whether its Hollywood or Bollywood I did not find any movie where various stories are told in such effortless manner. You do not loose any link when one story jumps to another. Hats off to Director! Ratings: **** (4 Star) {One is missing as its bit slow after the intermission } Casts: PERFECT. I am sure that Director must have given a lot of thought before signing them. Irafaan Khan does not need proving that he is one of the finest actor happen to Bollywood. He may be having just 2-3 dialogues but he conveys immensely through his facial expressions. Key Key is in his natural self. Watch him when Yusuf offers Shirdi SaiBaba Prasad, or when Tukaram Patil gives him word of wisdom. Madhavan, I am happy that you are getting role of your caliber finally. Audience will remember you for this character. Good show. Soha, good to know that you are concentrating more on your script and role unlike your brother. You had done full justice to your role but you have way to go. All credit goes to director who could extract best in Soha. Looks like director picked Vijay Maurya from theaters. You tend to forget its movie whenever Vijay Maurya comes on screen as loyal but disturbed constable. He is so natural that you don’t mind believing that he is real constable. And here comes award winning performance by Paresh Rawal. His body language, his facial expression, his dialogue delivery is flawless. After watching his performance the only thing that came to my mind is why he is underestimated so long. I will be disappointed if he won’t win National Award. I would like to mention other supporting characters as well. There are many but each one is just too good. Ratings: ****(4 Star) { One is missing as I felt Konkana Sharama Sen would have done better job than Soha} Others: This movie has only one background song which has excellent lyrics about ‘Jeevan.’. Recreated scenes of bomb blast makes you cry. Lighting is used effectively. If expressions are soul of the movie then dialogues are the life of the movie. Do not miss the dialogues by Tukaram Patil about communal rights and his last retirement speech. Rahul’s friend talk about 9/11 and un-secure life in America. Direction is superb and I don’t mind comparing Nishikant Kamat with Madhur Bhandarkar. Mr. Nihikant Kamat, we prefer to watch such meaningful cinema rather than mindless drama. So gear up for next release.!!! We are waiting. Ratings: ****(4 Star) Suv’s Verdict: If you are craving for meaningful cinema then this is NO NO MISS. Don’t go with the intension of entertainment. This is serious movie which has hard hitting message at the end. If there are budding terrorist then they must watch it, at least they will realize that path adopted by them is so wrong. I spent most important six struggling years of my life in Mumbai and I could instantly connect to spirit of Mumbai. If you are Mumbaikar then it will surely give you strength to tackle the situation. Its must watch for its soul stirring experience. MUMBAI IS JAAN OF INDIA – Aey dil hain aasan jeena yaha… Ratings: ****(4 Star) |

After the razzmatazz created by Singh is king, Jaane tus and God tussi great hos, here comes a movie that redefines the art of filmmaking. A film that captures the essence of life when something tragic hits you hard. A film that portrays a real life incident and its aftermath and sensitively send you a message that united, we can fight any thing. The film in question is Mumbai Meri Jaan.
The film revolves around the July 11 2006 blasts that ripped trains across Mumbai?s suburban network and how it transforms the lives of people. The films protagonists are individuals from various walks of life. You have a fanatic Hindu cum computer engineer (Kay Kay Menon), a rustic tea vendor (Irrfan Khan), a 9 to 5 kind office executive (R. Madhavan), an always on the move TV journalist (Soha Ali Khan), an on the verge of retirement police constable (Paresh Rawal). It depicts how the train blasts derailed their perception towards rational thinking. It portrays the anger and emotion of insulting the minority community, who become the targets instantly. It delves into the subconscious and how unknowingly you become suspicious of the other person and objects. It brings about a bond in tackling such crimes. It absorbs you with its touching moments. It portrays the sheer nakedness of a system for which there?s no system of control.
Mumbai Meri Jaan is not any ordinary film. It?s extraordinary. In 2 hours 26 minutes, it canvases everything that a person may go through in such crisis. It instills in us that come what may, life goes on; we need to be sensitive to other people?s issues, we should not take anybody for granted; we should shoulder responsibility and put an end to this menace called terrorism. It conveys the fact that it?s within us to put an end to this hatred between communities, political parties and bring back the glory of Amchi Mumbai. A Mumbai that was so peaceful, so much fun to live in circa?20 or say 30 years ago. In fact the whole country.
Mumbai Meri Jaan has some heart-warming moments that will make any filmmaker sit up in awe. Take for instance the scene where Kay Kay befriends a local Muslim youth, when he initially suspected him to be a terrorist; the realization of Irrfan's foolishness with his hoax call pranks and when he feels apologetic towards an old man who gets an heart attack while rushing out of the mall; the sensational retirement speech by Paresh Rawal; the blow-on the face of Soha Ali Khan, when she herself becomes the news, the observing of the 2-minute silence as a mark of respect to the bomb blast victims, Madhavans dreaded look scene when he finds himself on the tracks- realising how death missed him in the form of an angel friend who forced him to travel second class, the suicide attempt by the beat constable Vijay Maurya. These are some of the finest moments that's well written and exceptionally canned. I can't forget the superb visual special effects of the train blast and the passengers being blown out of the train and the aftermath of the devastation. The impact of the scene was such that I prayed silently for those people who lost their lives or got injured.
The films narrative is such that it does not provide us with any ready answers to end such terror acts and, I believe, that was the best thing. Because it's up to us. By living in harmony with each other. By respecting the law of the land. By respecting the values & culture of each religion and community. By not segregating ourselves in to North Indians, South Indians. By shunning ruthless politicians & leaders who crave behind the pallus of communalism and by living in unison as Indians.
Mumbai Meri Jaan is truly a thought provoking film and I salute the director Nishikant Kamat for giving us such a wonderful film and for award winning performances by everyone in the cast. They looked real.
Don't miss this masterpiece. Because masterpieces happen only once in a blue moon. So, what are you waiting for?

Mumbai meri jaan is a neat film made with a beautifully scripted story and a highly creative screenplay. THe top notch direction adds to the creation and the entire film flows like a mesmerizing symphony. The film has purposes, it has varied subjects and it touches them with such precision that I can not but marvel at the craft. This story touches the chords for those who are away from home..not just Mumbai, mind you. Those who have left their homes in search for better life meet the other side of the argument in the character of a young executive of can very well settle abroad for better money and facilities but will not. He's standing like a rock in the current where everyone finds a reason to leave Mumbai, rahter India. A part of his spirit breaks down with the Mumbai train blasts and his well placed decision of staying put, starts to tear apart. Media is often known to blind people. People outside the media and people in it. People in the media often forget that what is news to one, may be life to another. A beautiful depiction of a media personnel's life is part of this story. A hot-shot upcoming (and blinded) journo finds that she could not relate to a sensitive and emotional part of her life, as a prime time story. The well known Hindu-Muslim racist opinions are beautifully encrypted in this story. With the stubbornness broken - not with an intent to break it to pieces, but at least add a well placed crack in it. The way this particular subject has been handled speaks volumes about the story's authenticity and honesty with the different genres of people. The Mumbai police, another significant segment of this story has filled any possible vaccume. And like a jingle in a song, a cherry on the cake, is the little compilation of pieces of a tea-seller's life, which spreads across this story. This film is like musical symphony. A beautiful song, that touched a cord. But, it is not for you if you're out for serious fun and dhammal. This would touch that level where fun transforms into happiness and it's calm. Often this level comes with evolvement of the soul. So if you miss the calm, you might be missing the level ;) |

director : Nishikant Kamat. Well i choose to mention his name since he deserves all the hoopla and honor for the movie he's conceptualised.
5 lead characters. 5 parallel lives. all intertwined into one being. the city they live in - Mumbai. yeh, dat seems the rite way to start. Like a documentary, though more interestin than it, but as real as if it is one. u go in th theatre thinkin about some same old shit about terorrism et al. I mean havent v seen dat before? wel u fill find dat, but there's somethin more to it. Emotions and other issues, from the eyes of a daily road travellin mumbaikar.
its true u dont experience d real city in a/c cars or airports. Our roads r where our hearts lie unleashed and uncovered. The movie covers issues that we would want to run away from, dat if v saw these on tv, we would switch over to some other channel; as if it never happened; like gratifyingly covering the eyes with a pair of glossy glasses, that give a glossy picture. The scene where dead bodies lie scattered, right after the blast, haunts u even after its all gone; simply because we wouldnt have ever bothered to see those disturbing images in the comforts of our homes. Its not an allegation. Its the truth. Why go through the virtual trauma when it fails to even touch u in reality.
The simplicity hits so hard that u wonder y did u ever think it was simple, just a fact, jus like a statistic in the first place.. It shows how these 5 protaganists get affected by a comman incident - the 7 consecutive bomb blasts in the mumbai trains one after the other, n how they n the city deals with it.
Its about more. Its about potholes, police and their bribes and the fight they go through with their conscience if they want to fight the age-old ritual (read: the ritual of bribes, which if one policeman opposes has a harder time, than the one who is being following it since years without questions or doubts n livin a happy man.)
Its about news reporters and what ridiculously preposterous questions they can come up with seconds after a disaster hits the common man, the bizarreness of which they realise only they unfortuantely have to face one. Its about the comman mumbaikar, with an average paycheck, with no inkling of the inflation, is awed by the sudden change in the face of mumbai; the mall culture and the treatment the city gives to his likes (all in the packaging people..u dont look presentable enough? no 10 grand monthly paycheck? Oh stay away from us. u dont belong here.) The comman man u see on the road when u travel, r.k. narayan's man who wonders where he fits in with his little family in this ever growing commercial concrete cosmopolitan jungle of people ridden by dreams.
Its about us. Its about people in this city who are constantly caught between the idea of workin here or settling abroad; of 'serving' ur nation back or of thinkin of ur own comforts firsts; of the moments when we wonder is it worth the risk of taking in the stress of the long commuting hours, the roads, the bribery, the people. Its about people who still look at other people of certain religion with a doubt, which we do considering our past experiences and fears. Its about those thousand times that we have argued with our friends in favour or against our city; if it will ever improve, or whether it even has a need to improve.
In spite of everything above that sounds unpleasant, everyone flocks here. The undyin spirit n all that? yeh may b. But there was a time when i wondered if the spirit thing about the city was a hoax. That even after a major disaster, we r not scared to travel by trains or get back to work just the next day. Well i as a matter-of-factly thought that its purely because the people just dont have a choice of not goin to work or travellin by trains. Many live hand-to-mouth here and that fact ends the so-called spirit thing.
But somewhere i was wrong, n i choose not to be that cynical. I guess the fact that u will never be alone on any street, at any given time in this city, overflowing with souls, that makes u want to take that risk, knowing that someone wil always be there to lend a hand, to let u not drown in a flood, or help u not get burnt in a blast, or at least take u to the hospital if u get hit by a car.
Anything can happen here. Well anywhere for that matter u'd think. Y single out this city? U r happy at the end of the day, that u r alive, u hv clothes to wear, n ur not sleepin hungry in the nite. Wel i m. Happy. And thankful. And may b after seein this movie, u'll think all this, salute it, salute the 'spirit' of the city, and be thankful too. And u would think its not such a bad city after all.

Mumbai saw horrific day on 11th July 2006. 7 bomb blasts in local trains life line of Mumbai. Several people lost lives and Mumbai was shattered once again. This movie was based on this awful accident. This movie showed lives of several residents of Mumbai from different strata of life who got affected by this accident. The emotional, physical trauma they are going though. Police who are on duty and wants to do his duty with honor, but forced to get into the system by other police. A TV reporter who loose her fiance in bomb blast. A techie who wants to stay in India and improve his country. A computer seller who thinks certain people are responsible for the bombs. A tea vendor who plays pranks by hoax calls of bomb in shopping malls to take revenge of some insult. Story was fast paced, well told and shot excellently. Job well done by director and cameraman. A must watch. |
