Story of Shakespeare's Othello & Desdemona. Indian Movie Directors mapped the story written by the British Literary figure to a remote Indian village lifestyle – probably because they have not been able to forgive what the British officers did to us while they ruled over us !!
Many things to learn from the movie – esp. about the lifestyle of Indian villagers – points to ponder:
1.Missed about the first 20 mins of the movie – so I really cannot tell under what circumstances – fair & lovely - Dolly (Kareen Kapoor) fell in love with dark , ugly ,uncouth & uneducated Omkara (Ajay Devgan) who kills people in broad daylight – and that's how he makes a living – that's Indian politics ?! – kill anyone who comes on your way and poses as a threat to your power & position !
2. Dolly leaves her father's palace and Omkara hears this comment ‘ a girl who can leave her father's palace can leave anyone' ..it registers in his mind.
3.Two other characters – Keshu (Vivek Oberoi) and Langara(Saif Ali). Langra wants to become the village head ‘Bahubal' but Omkara makes Keshu the Bahubal instead – thus Langra wants to take revenge – and he takes ‘instant' revenge – unlike the good people vs. bad people scenario (old movies usually based on Mahabharata – Pandavas going to exile for 14 long years..then fight…small baby Hero sees his parents murdered, sister raped and thrown in the ditch – Heroine about to be raped – when suddenly he loses control to kill all the baddies) where the goody-goody hero goes on forgetting and forgiving…& then finally understands that its better to ‘nip the devil in the bud'…but by that time the baddies have the ‘best' of both the Worlds…like Money, power, fame, sexy dames to ‘gyrate' with etc.!
So Langra hits upon a plan – to sow seeds of ‘suspicion' in the mind of Omkara against his beautiful wife and his friend – Keshu – and he does it in a very planned way.
4.Dolly elopes with Omkara and starts to ‘live together' with him and is even seen having ‘active sex' with him – all before wedlock! – Conclusion : Indian villages are pretty bold then I must say !..or is it because Omkara kills people in broad daylight so he can get away with anything he wants ?
5. Omkara presents Dolly with a bejeweled ‘kamar-band' (waist band) made of heavy silver and is a family tradition to give it away to the daughter-in-law of the family. While running around playfully with him she drops it and the piece is stolen by Langra's wife. Under usual circumstances such a heavy piece cannot be missed by even a blind person – but maybe because she was a rich girl – it just slipped her mind to tell Omkara that she has lost the waist band . A piece of note here : the heavy metal waist band is equated to Desdemona's handkerchief – which she lost – which was the cause of her untimely death !!
Lesson : One should marry the person who more or less belongs to the same social strata – this way a lot of misunderstandings can be checked !
6. Keshu ,in the mean time is shown as an active ‘humper' – he is a flirt of the highest order and humps around available girls / ladies like ‘desperate housewives/ sisters /daughters etc. and is known for this nature of his! He finally wants to settle down with an ‘Item girl' who dances in front of the villagers (males) in tiny ‘cholies' (brassier cut blouses which somehow manages to cover the breasts) – Keshu finds in her an ideal mate! – and proposes to her.
Conclusion : Indian villagers are not all that innocent as I thought them to be after reading Munshi Prem Chand's Gowdaan – etc.- after watching the way the villagers – of all age groups – were ogling at the ‘item girl'/drinking & dancing – I think it serves them right when they have drought or floods and die amass !!Children of such ‘wasteful' fathers who are debauches, cheap and whore mongers are a burden to Mother Earth – the reason why Earthquakes & Tsunamis come often in India……and finish them off – to create a balance !
7.Langra creates a misunderstanding between Omkara and Keshu – its like this : the item girl was dancing and Langra's friend smokes in front of her….a girl whose job is to gyrate and seduce frustrated drunkard hooligans all the 24x7 hours of her life – could not tolerate the smoke and begins to cough – thus Keshu is instigated and starts battering people – Omkara sees it and gives him a dressing down. Langra suggests that Dolly should be approached who can cool down Omkara. He approaches Dolly and she asks him to teach her ‘I just called to say I love you' by Steve Wonder – so that she could sing it to Omkara ! But while Keshe was teaching her – Omkara suddenly approaches and he runs off – igniting suspicion on Omkara's mind! Keshu was known for his ‘Humping' nature and he was better looking than Omkara – thus misunderstanding was but natural !
Conclusion : Men do not understand ‘love' –since they judge women by their standards – many men – if they get half a chance to ‘hump' a ‘prettier than his wife' woman – he'll do so with the bat of an eyelid…so I guess they think that women also would do the same …infact women are doing the same nowadays since they understood after long last..having seen many permutations and combinations – that there is nothing called love after all – its just a ‘good hump session' – that's all !
7. Langra gives Keshu the waist band and urges him to give it to the ‘Item girl' so that she can help him ‘rope in' a villain who is needed to be killed. He creates such a situation that Omkara is led to believe that Dolly had slept with Keshu and after enjoying ‘sex' with him – she was so happy that she presented him the waistband ..or maybe after a good ‘hump' session – Dolly fell asleep and Keshu stole the waist band and ran away…since he probably was waiting to get paid for his ‘services' but because she fell asleep – so he ran away with the waist band !And since Item girls do not give ‘sexual services' for free so he presented her the waistband in turn !!Then Langra creates such a situation that the ‘item girl' begins to expect total ‘chastity' from Keshu and when she comes to know – falsely – that Keshu is ‘sleeping' with someone – she goes to return the waist band back to him – this scene takes place right in front of Omkara – Omkara goes home and on their very first night – he kills Dolly (suffocates her with a pillow)- they did not have a bed – a swing to sleep on ….. anyways ‘love making' would have been pretty difficult on the swing…..and moreover he had already tasted her…before wedlock – so he didn't miss much.
8. Anyways the Director could not keep Omkara alive after this crime of killing the innocent doll – Dolly – or else the International Women's Rights Group would have thrown a tantrum…..and releasing the movie would have been difficult.
So folks - Desdemona's hanky became Dolly's waistband and they both met their untimely death by the ones who loved them once !
Conclusion : Do not marry a man who is ugly looking than you are – he'll live in this constant fear of ‘promiscuous-ness ' and make your life a ‘living hell' ! also marry someone who belongs to your family standards and strata – things will be much easier that way.
PS: I just wrote it from the 'BottOM' of my heart.......I was amazed to see how Dolly was trying o seduce Omkara (Othello - name started with 'O' and Omkara too started with the letter 'O' -) by singing an English song!! A village bred uncouth, hindi speaking and gaali galochofying (abusing) in hindi will be seduced by an English song ! What a dumb thing to do really !! In fact it is the song - the teaching - learning process that led to the untimely death.... if only she sang a Hindi song...kinda 'mere piya gaye Rangoon' ....things would have been different !......a poor blind singer - Steve Wonder - is to be blamed now !!
Another thing - this Keshu was good in English - he could speak well - which means he was educated etc....so ?!after being educated and learned....you behave like this? propose an Item Girl !! See Education System in India should be totally 'terminated' !!
