Being a big(read very BIG) bollywood fan, I was beginning to feel restless after Mid February. No major release at all. I m used
to my staple diet of Hindi films regularly.Jodhaa Akbar was the last biggie and it took almost more than a month for the next one!!(of course there were some forgettable ones in between).
So when the advance booking opened for RACE, I booked the tickets for the first day..
Tips Films got the right kind of buzz for the film..Music rocking the charts, excellent publicity, awesome promos and moreover the presence of current heartthrob, Chhote Nawaab, in the film.
So what is Race all about ....
Race is the story of two Step brothers Ranveer(Saif) and Rajeev(Akshaye)..Ranveer is a shrewd, calculative and practical guy. His only weakness is his unconditional love for Rajeev. Whereas Rajeev is a laid back ,casual guy. Rajeev?s weakness - alcohol They own a Stud farm in Durban, they breed horses and are one of the biggest bookies..The whole business is taken care by Ranveer alone. Rajeev is always drunk and has no interest in the going-ons of their business. Ranveer is ably assisted by his secretary Sophia(Katrina) in his work. Sophia adores Ranveer, but Ranveer looks unaware of her feelings.. Sonia(Bipasha) is an upcoming model and has befriended Ranveer. Ranveer and Sonia are very close and its only a matter of time when Ranveer is gonna "pop the question"! But fate has something else in store for them. At a party, Rajeev sees Sonia and falls for her. He promises Ranveer, that, if Sonia comes in his life, he would mend his ways.. Ranveer being the good and responsible brother, sacrifies his love. He distances himself from Sonia. Sonia finds comfort and new love in charming Rajeev..Rajeev and Sonia get close and just when Sonia thinks, Rajeev is gonna propose her. Rajeev startles her(and audience as well) with some of the documents/facts of Sonia?s life, which are obviously not portraying anything good about Sonia. Some crisp dialogues are mouthed and a deal is struck between them !! And it is very clear, they both care a damn about LOVE..All that matters is MONEY.. They hatch a plan. A trap is laid for Ranveer!!
But still nothing is what it looks..Every character is having his own sinister plans..Loyalities keep changing..No one can trust the other!!Everything for Money!!
A murder is committed and an Indian cop RD(Anil Kapoor), along with his assistant Mini(Sameera Reddy), is called upon for investigation. RD is a wierd guy , a la Karamchand. He has his own ways and ofcourse his own moralities.
A lot more twists in the tale, some more secrets unveiled - leading to the final RACE!!
First things first , Race scores bigtime in following departments - Starcast, Music, action sequences, a feverish pace throughout....
The story is nothing great, but it does have its moments..Race is outstanding in Style department, but somewhere you feel it lacks enough substance. The execution could have been a lot better..
Abbas - Mastan and their writer Shiraz Ahmed should have worked more on the execution. The sequences could have been interwoven much better. Too many twists, too many surprises may cause the viewer confused..In short, the story could have been told in a better way, still not giving away the thrills!!
If not for the spirited starcast, Race could have been a below average product..
Starting with Akshaye - He easily slips into the chameleon act and gives a winning performance. He gets some of the best lines in the 1st half of the film and he clearly doesnt miss the opportunity..Anil is like old wine. His performances and versatility are getting better day by day. He still can give the younger lot a run for their money..He is laced with the corniest lines in 2nd half and brings a smile whenever he comes on screen!
The ladies - Bipasha looks sexy, performs and delivers her dialogues with sincerity..Katrina is adequate, however she gets good scope in 2nd half and doesnt disappoint. Sameera, as the dumb assistant to Anil, compliments him well.
Johny Lever in the one scene he has, manages to do well!!
But its Saif?s character, which has your focus all the time. He doesnt have the best lines. Its his sheer confidence and the way he has carried the role, that makes him stand out!! His look , his expressions and his dialogue delivery are superb!! Surely, he would be the most benefitted from this film!! Kudos Saif, definitely you have come a long long way since your Aashiq Aawara days :)
Director Duo Abbas Mastan have done better than their previous two ventures(Naqaab and 36 China town). But surely, Race is not one of their best works!! We expected more from you guys!!
Music by Pritam is very good. The tunes are racy and melodious.. But, again, the placement of songs is poor(except for the Pehli nazar mein track). Technically too the film is great- Cinematography by Ravi Yadav is superb(captures beautiful locales of South Africa very well)! Action by Allan Amin is good and is one of the plusses!!Special mention about the class styling by Anahita Shroff Adjania.
Kuch hazam nahi hua:-
One of the protagonist falls from the terrace of a high-storeyed building. The other two, who are present there, dont even bother to come down and check what happend to him..Strange!!
A line which kept me in splits for a while:- Anil has a sugarcane and asks Akshay - "Aap Khayenge?"..Akshay looks quizically.. Anil retorts - "Ganna hai.. Chusenge kya kehna?? theek nahi lagta..Isliye poocha khaayenge kya"...
All in all - Race is very high on style quotient!!! Watch it for Saif, the other performances and a few well-executed scenes!! Dont expect too much and you will not be disappointed!!
My rating - **1/2(just above average)

No... seriously... what in the name of the good lord were the so called director duo of Abbas-Mustan actually thinking.. Had they seriously planned on an all out action thriller, or was taking the movie from a breath taking, fast paced introduction to an absolute nonsensical, sloppy and dilapidated central plot and then wrapping in all up with a superbly choreographed but simply unnecessary race sequence a twist in itself.... anyways, me and my friends went to the multiplex hoping to be treated to a typical bollywood masala action thriller, and we cant blame Abbas-Mustan for giving us exactly what we expected. in the end it was the simple case of a thriller inevitebly transforming itself into a comedy... me and my buddies had an absolute laugh riot. and to top it all up, we had the three actresses to drool over. saif's performance stood out from the rest. the least said about akshay the better i guess. all in all, if you've had a bad day at the office and are really pissed off at your boss, take some time out and watch this movie. i promise you, by the time you are out of the multiplex, you'll be heading straight to your boss' house with a sledg hammer in your in your hands.... |

The movie is housefull from the morning shos in multiplexes. No tickets are available at the booking counter. This shows the hype surrounded around “Race”. The are festivities around with long extended weekend. The hype is working its magic and opening is fabulous. Why there shall not be hype? It has gorgeous babes, hot male actors, foot tapping music, slick promos and the name promises an edge of the seat thriller. Apart from that its from thriller expert Abbas-Mustan. What if their last 2 movies failed due to week scripts….. the duo still commend a lot of cradibility for their entertaining thrillers like Gupt, Ajnabi, Soldier, etc. But can they spell their magic on the silverscreen this time? Does the film work? And the good news is….. YES! It works BIG TIME! ***** please visit www.bollywoodreviews.net for detailed review. --- Prashen H Kyawal www.bollywoodreviews.net |

There is one thing common in all recent Abbas-Mustan movies, all the characters in the movies have their defined game plan. All of them are scheming against each other. I think now I know how Abbas-Mustan make their movies. They are two brothers with clearly distinct way of thinking. They first discuss one idea and write their individual scripts and in the end they club each others script and the result is a movie like Race, where everyone is conspiring against each other. I am not against unpredictability but, the way these movies are made it's more confusing and sometimes even director seem to forget, what exactly they want to show.
Race is a movie about two brothers Ranveer (Saif) and Rajiv (Akshaye). Sonia (Bipasha) is an upcoming model, who is falling for Ranveer and Sofia (Katrina) is Ranveer secretary, who secretly loves him. At least that is what we are told by Anil Kapoor's voice in the beginning. But after watching the entire movie, it seems that Anil was trying to confuse the audience by giving them irrelevant and incorrect information. Soon after we are shown some scenes involving Saif and Dileep Tahil, which we later come to know had nothing to do with the basic plot of the film. Finally we are told about Rajiv's master plan to earn 100 million from Ranveer's insurance policy by killing him with the help of Sonia (confused? you thought Bipasha was in love with Ranveer. Hold your breath may be she also has her own master plan. May be she actually loves Ranveer and is just double crossing Rajiv). By interval Ranveer is dead and RD (Anil Kapoor) is the investigating officer of the case. In second half we are told that Sofia also has her own plan of claiming the 100 million insurance money. We see confused faces of Rajiv and Sonia, but to your utter surprise Sofia and Rajiv are together in this plan. Confused again? me too.
May be some day Abbas-Mustan will learn that not everyone in this world is scheming against each other, there are actually some normal characters who react to the situation instead of having everything planned in advance. May be we can someday get to watch something like Bazigar or Khiladi from the director duo. I am certainly not expecting another Naqaab or Race.
This movie promises to be full of sex, lies and style, and that is what it delivers, with overdose of confusion. The movie is a visual treat with several good looking faces and beautiful locales of South Africa. I think in action movies don't require great acting, so wont talk about acting performances except mentioning Anil Kapoor, who is good in an underdeveloped role, speaking double meaning dialogs. None of the songs have anything to do with the story and could have been avoided. Minus the songs and some other irrelevant scenes, the movie could have been a better watch.
I would rate this as 5 out of 10. If you have Johnny Gaddaar's DVD, watch that instead of Race, if you are looking to watch a good thriller. Else you know what to expect from Race.
PS: If Anil Kapoor knew everything from the beginning, why he took all the trouble of investigating the case. Specially going to Capetown and meeting the real estate agent, he could have easily asked Ranveer, what happened there. |

Looks like there is a six-cornered tussle or “Race” between all the actors of this film. For everyone one seems to be busy garnering a meaty screen presence by cutting moral corners or nudging each other off the sleeves. The beauties turn up in the slinkiest bib n tucker, each vying for your attention. And if that is not enough, you have Saif’s stubble to catch your eyeballs and Anil’s lovable quirks. The only problem is that the course of this “Race” gives you sudden jerks and sharp turns, and leaves you overtly out-of-breath. For in an attempt to bring on the “twist n turns”, the director swerves the film off the track completely.
If you still want to hear an account of this film, here it is ....in my shytle…
The two brothers - Ranvir (Saif) and Rajeev (Akshay) are in the horse-racing biz (see, that’s the first thread of the RACE connection). The second is the fact that Rajeev is perpetually racing with his brother….trying to unsuccessfully outdo him till he decides to bump him off forever. One such attempt pitchforks Saif into the hospital, and he is pronounced not dead yet. Lo and behold, he bungee jumps out of the hospital to shake a leg or two with his girl friend, Shaina (Bipasha Basu). And there is not even a single bruise mark on his body after an earth-shattering accident. That’s Unbreakable Part 2!
Anyways, Ranvir learns that Rajeev is in love with our sexy siren, and decides to sacrifice his love for bro’s sake. And Rajeev promises to have Complan instead of hard drink as his breakfast menu everyday, after his marriage to Shaina. So the marriage happens and then another story unfolds. Shaina and Ranvir plot to kill the Unbreakable, the second time. But not before he gets to sleep with Bips and groove to a Touch-Me-Touch Me Not number (with Katrina Kaif in tow).
And as part of another convoluted twist, we learn that Shaina is actually on Ranvir’s side. Or not? Because she pushes the latter off a building after bidding a short farewell. And just when the partners in crime are about to pounce on the dead man’s insurance money, Sophiya (Katrina) surfaces claiming to be Ranvir’s wife.
Around the same time, Robert Decosta (Anil Kapoor) and his assistant (Sameera Reddy) enter the fray to investigate into the murder. Because Anil gets all his crime fundas right by munching fruits, his secretary strives to supply a generous amount of all kinda seasonal exotics (bananas, berries, melons, grapes). He names it and she gets it! OK..now coming back to the story….already gone awry…Sophiya recounts how she got married to Ranvir amid all the hip-swinging and shaking in a queer little Cape Town.
However, it turns that Sophiya has been acting on Rajeev’s orders! And that Anil is in cahoots with Rajeev…leaving our poor Bips all alone! But hey wait, Ranvir nows emerges from the ashes and becomes the Dead Man Walking. He jumps, rolls, and pirouettes to save his damsel-in-distress (But wait ..wait…was she not the one who ditched him earlier on?)
Whatever, Ranvir now returns back to bro’s den and challenges him to a race (NO…NOT AGAIN). At this point, some of the deadly secrets are revealed….And bet…you won’t find them half as engrossing as the full-on race that we all started off with.
After the film credits start to roll, a semblance of normalcy comes back to you…you thanks stars for being able to order your brain to go on a roller-coaster ride with no bumps guarantee!!!
PS: And RACE wins the race for being the most disappointing thriller of the year. |

Director Duo Abbas Mastan is back on their track with well made thriller Race. First 25 minutes are not so impressive and the first song pictureise on Saif, Bipasha, Akshay & Katrina is damb squib it was better if it was edited on the table. But after 25 minutes movie pace shoot up and with excellent twist and thrill. Pritam music is not so good as only 3 songs are good in the movie. Some songs squences were similiar to welcome as they have copied it. Shot in South Africa & Dubai, well 55 percent of the scene are shot in Dubai, No matter director showed them that's it is South Africa. Akshay & Bipasha have done their negative character as per their standard. Just before the interval their is huge twist when saif ali khan dies. and wait yaar picture abhi baaki hain mere dost. Their is new life on the screen Anil Kapoor comes in for the investigation with his PA Sameera. And then the investigation starts. Anil Kapoor as RD Means Inspector Robert D'costa is terrific and he is never empty handed eating different fruit thru out the film is very well acted. In terms of Anil Kapoor presence he steal the show. Yes he is the best part in the film. And Anil Starts investigation and finding out that there is 100 million dollars insurance is behind the murder. and then again their is a new twist that Saif Pa Katrina as sophia tells Anil thats she is the wife of Saif, its shocks Bipasha & Akshay that when they married. But again their is a new twist that Saif Ali Pa predicting Wife is Involved with AKSHAY yes This comes to shock that Katrina is behind all these things with Partner AKSHAY. and Anil Ask Katrina to show him the marriage certificate to find out the authentication of the certificate and he find thats there is something fishy in the signature as normal people who are going for marriage at the registrar will use the same pen. But in this case then both signature are signed with different pens. And Anil then goes to Durban to find the thruth that Saif and Katrina married or not. Here is entry comedy king Jhony Lever as the head of marriage registrar is brilliant doing only 4 minute scene is teriific, and then jhony reveals that Saif never came to marriage office and then who was with Katrina it was non other than Akshay. After this their is one more twist, which is better not to reveal as Race is worth a Watch. 75% of the movie i have revealed it but rest watch it by ur self. It is a good movie. Saif Ali Is in Terrific form. Rest all are good. Anil is the show stealer. Katrina as usual can't act as she is always having her voiced dub by the proffesional. Over All Paisa Vasool Movie. |

Suspense by definition is something which is uncertain. However, unfortunately Abbas Mastan never read this probably. Result, I knew after the first twist in the movie, what is going to happen next. They were all predictable and there is no surprise. It seemed that the directors were trying to punish a cat by twisting the tail to the max no. of times. Hopeless is the word for the direction. Believe me it is random, aimless, needless and directionless. And yes, do watch the movie if your IQ has been letting you down for sometime. This guessing will certainly help. There is style in the movie. There are decent dialogues in the movie. There is good cinematography. The characters did justice to their roles. Music is as everyone knows - Cool. You can watch it, but the story may frustrate you to the core. So, if you like intelligent storyline - Johnny Gaddar, Manorama 6 feet under ----- Skip the show for this movie. Cheers |

Shaina (Bipasha Basu) is an Indian Model and shares a beautiful relationship with Ranvir. But fate has some other plans for her. Rajeev is still addicted to alcohol although he promised his elder brother that he would leave it after marriage. In a moment of truth Ranvir and Shaina come close to each other and an affair begins. All hell is broken loose when Rajeev suspects his wife of double crossing. A Murder is committed. Enter Robert.D. Costa(Anil Kapoor), a detective who lives by his values. He is desperate to find out the truth and arrest the perpetrator. He is very clever and has a bizarre addiction to fruits. Mini (Sameera Reddy) is R.D’s personal assistant and is as dumb as sexy she is. Thus the Race begins as the story unfolds in a series of unexpected twists and turns and a nail-biting climax which is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat. With brilliantly executed action sequences and an intriguing storyline, Race is certainly a movie to watch out for. Movie with lots of twists, even at one point of time you will also start thinking what exactly the story was? But one thing for sure Director has made every actor dance with every actress, and so to fulfill his motive he has made such a twister. I developed my imagination power so much while watching the movie that I was expecting Akshaya Khanna to come back even after the movie was finished :-). So my take on the movie is not to suggest it to anybody unless, I have a big revenge to take. :-) Saif with Bipasha, then with Katrina Akshaya with Bipasha then with Katrina, Thank god the script writer was not so modern otherwise we could have seen Katrina-Bipasha and Saif-Akshaya chemistry.... Horrible... |

e two brothers - Ranvir (Saif) and Rajeev (Akshay) are in the horse-racing biz (see, that’s the first thread of the RACE connection).

Post KHILADI and BAAZIGAR, Abbas-Mustan rightfully earned the tag of being the undisputed Badshaahs of Thrillers. They made a series of films thereafter -- of varied genres -- but every time they attempted a thriller, the comparisons with KHILADI and BAAZIGAR were inevitable. That’s because Abbas-Mustan couldn’t outdo these two films ever.
The director duo’s latest offering RACE, which packs glitz, glam and style with A-listers [on and off screen], carries the baggage of tremendous expectations. The stars, the stunning locales, the breath-taking visuals, the mesmeric songs, the electrifying chase, the chic styling -- everything you see on screen resembles an international flick.
But the million dollar question is, does it live up to the humungous expectations? Does it have its heart in the right place? Thankfully, it does!
RACE is Abbas-Mustan’s most accomplished work, after BAAZIGAR. Any thriller works if and only if the story has the edge-of-the-seat moments and which catches you unawares as the reels unfold. RACE has that quality. The story moves in a serpentine manner, there’s a twist every fifteen minutes and it’s impossible to guess what the culmination would be.
In a nutshell, RACE is a first-rate product all the way. It’s not just style, but there’s substance as well. It has the merits to get catapulted to the Bests of 2008, when you reflect on the year. Bravo!
Ranvir [Saif Ali Khan] and Rajiv [Akshaye Khanna] are step-brothers who own a huge stud farm in Durban, South Africa. They breed horses on their huge ranch house and are also the biggest bookies in the horse racing circuit. Ranvir, the elder of the two, is known to be a very shrewd man. He is very aggressive and is always on the move. Rajiv, on the other hand, is very laidback and is also a chronic alcoholic.
Sophia [Katrina Kaif] is Ranvir’s personal secretary. She adores her boss and loves him. Ranvir is totally unaware of her feeling and regards her adoration as her efficiency. Sonia [Bipasha Basu] is an upcoming Indian ramp model in Durban.
Sonia loves Ranvir, but through a twist of fate gets married to Rajiv. When she discovers that Rajiv is a chronic alcoholic, her world is shattered. Ranvir too is disturbed as he has sacrificed his love for his younger brother because Rajiv had promised him that if he gets married to Sonia, he will leave alcohol forever.
After marriage, Rajiv breaks his promise and the story starts getting complicated. In a weak moment, Ranvir and Sonia come very close to each other and an affair starts between the younger brother’s wife and the elder brother. When the younger brother starts suspecting his wife, all hell breaks loose.
A murder is committed, a contract killing is issued, double crossings become the order of the day… A sharp-tongued investigative officer R.D. [Anil Kapoor] starts an investigation with his brainless assistant Mini [Sameera Reddy].
Director duo Abbas-Mustan are in complete command this time around. Everything is so well synchronized that the end result leaves you awe-struck. The 2 + hours of your precious life that you’ve spent on this film are absolutely worth your while. In 36 CHINA TOWN and NAQAAB specifically, one disagreed with the climax. But the penultimate reels of RACE are foolproof.
Abbas-Mustan get it right this time. Right from the choice of subject, to the choice of actors, to the thrilling moments, music and locales, this thrill-a-minute saga works big time. The game of one-upmanship indulged by the two brothers is electrifying and easily the hallmark of the enterprise.
Writer Shiraz Ahmed’s screenplay has several moments that merit a mention. The best part is, the writing is full of energy and surprises, not once does it take the been-there-seen-that route. It would be foolhardy to single out a few sequences since the film gathers speed from its inception itself. One of its USPs is that every character is out to double cross the other, each character has grey shades and the dangerous games they indulge in make it an exhilarating cinematic experience.
Ravi Yadav’s cinematography is topnotch. The stunning locales of Durban, Dubai and India are captured lucidly by the DoP. But, most importantly, the movement of the camera at several places deserves the highest praise. Note the very start of the film [the aerial view, right till the gruesome accident] or the car chase in the climax [never seen before on the Hindi screen], the camerawork is stunning.
Pritam’s music rocks. Generally, in most thrillers, the music takes a backseat, but not here. ‘Allah Duhai Hai’ [foot-tapping], ‘Pehli Nazar Mein’ [with soulful rendition by Atif Aslam], ‘Touch Me’ [very saucy] and ‘Sexy Lady’ [the new track; trendy] are terrific compositions all and their filming and choreography are masterly. The fact that the yuppie crowd has taken to the songs in a big way, says it all. The race at the start and the chase in the climax [Allan Amin] are fantastic. You haven’t witnessed something like this ever before on the Hindi screen, that’s for sure! Hussain Burmawala’s editing is razor-sharp. It’s one of the best edited works!
Dialogues [Anuraag Prapanna, Jitendra Parmar] are excellent. Styling [Anaita Shroff Adajania] is superb. Background score [Salim-Sulaiman] has the international feel. Choreography [Bosco-Caesar and Ganesh Acharya] is top class.
Every actor in RACE puts his/her best foot forward. Saif has been coming up with sparkling portrayals and films like KAL HO NAA HO, EK HASINA THI, HUM TUM, SALAAM | NAMASTE, OMKARA and EKLAVYA – THE ROYAL GUARD portrayed the actor’s acting skills to the fullest. Now add RACE to his illustrious repertoire. He’s marvelous all through and the bearded look suits him very much.
Akshaye is so perfect. To carry off a difficult character like this is a Herculean task and the supremely talented actor handles it with aplomb. He’s like a chameleon; he slips into various roles with remarkable ease. But the fact cannot be denied that Abbas-Mustan bring out the best in Akshaye. Watch his body of work and you’d agree that Akshaye’s performances in the director duo’s films have always stood out.
Anil Kapoor comes at the interval point, but takes charge in the post-interval portions. With such serious characters in the film, Anil’s role comes as a big relief. Sure, the viewers may find some of his dialogues crass, but the masses will take to his performance in a big way.
Bipasha looks stunning and delivers her best work so far. She’s superb. Katrina is a complete surprise. The actress looks gorgeous, but most importantly, her character gives her ample opportunity to shine in the latter half. Sameera excels as the dumb girl. Actually, it’s a tough job and she does it well. Johny Lever is there for one sequence and his role is aimed at the hoi polloi.
On the whole, RACE is a superb entertainer all the way. It’s not just style, it has substance as well. At the box-office, the tremendous hype coupled with the holidays in the opening week as well as the extensive release will ensure huge numbers in the initial week. But, most importantly, the film has legs to enjoy a spirited run at the box-office. Smash Hit! Be Ready For its sequel........ |
