Shortkut ? The Con is On is an entertaining tale of con, deceit, super stardom and the subsequent fall. It is a story of the trials and tribulations of two con artists, a struggling director and actor, and the wacky situations they face in the pursuit of their tinsel town dreams. Shekhar (Akshaye Khanna), an aspiring assistant director and Chandu (Arshad Warsi), a wannabe junior artiste meet each other while struggling to make it in the film industry. While Shekhar is supremely talented and confident, Chandu is a buffoon and a non actor who thinks he is God?s gift to Bollywood! Chandu manages to steal Shekhar?s prized script and is catapulted to super stardom. Following this incident, Shekhar plunges into a phase of self pity and dejection, which results in his wife Mansi (Amrita Rao) leaving him. Shattered, Shekhar is now looking for that golden chance to get even with Chandu. Shot in picturesque Thailand, Shortkut comes with a generous dose of laughter and emotions that tug at your heartstrings. It comes from the production house of veteran actor, Anil Kapoor (Slumdog Millionaire) and director Neeraj Vora (Phir Hera Pheri).

ShortKut - Not What You Expect

Short Kut - The Con is On is copied from the Malayalam movie Udayananu Thaaram which itself was copied from the movies Bowfinger and Big Fat Liar and ironically the movie is about plagiarism. Raju (Arshad Warsi), a bad actor makes it big as a superstar after stealing a script from Shekhar (Akshaye Khanna), a struggling assistant director who becomes depressed after this. He gets married to actress Mansi (Amrita Arora) but they get separated because of his ego problems. He finally gets a chance to direct but has to work with Raju who only wants to stall the movie.

The movie is a big torture and has so many characters that one feels claustrophobic while watching the movie. Even the few funny scenes from the previews do not look funny in the movie. The previews advertised it as some comic movie and instead the movie is filled with rona dhona and looks like the makers were trying to con the audience. The movie has all the clichés - the actress's family who are just interested in her money, the actress who is in love with this poor struggler (they even meet in parks), the ego problems between the husband and the wife ala Abhimaan, the chawl filled with poor people ala Nukkad who are always happy and making fun of each other and ready to contribute lots of money.

There is no short cut also for this film to be hit

There are number of hindi comedy movies are coming compare to any other genre of film as it is giving at least invested amount to the customer. But it doesn't mean that anyone can make a movie, anyone can make any kind of movie. Same thing has happened with "Short cut".  The movie is not good at all to watch.

The movie is publicited as a comedy movie. From trailers on TV we guessed that its would be a huge laugh riot. But in  real it is not. It was shown that the movie is about Arshad Warsi. But Arshad has very less importance in this film.

Director Neeraj Vora has directed his movi like Phir Herapheri and has written scripts for hits like "Herapheri", "Golmaal". But he is still not a director. He again fails here to take a short cut.

There is a law of nature "Change is inevitable". So Hindi film indutry needs a change form this tyoical comedy to a serious black comedy like "Andaz Apna Apna", "Golmaal".

Never take a shortcut to achieve succes

Never take a shortcut in life as life do not gives u the second chance; the authentic moral in the film is not actually disclosed. As it never seems to be a comedy, it could only be considered as a drama. Anil Kapoor's production was a poor end comedy, where it emphasized nothing. It was neither a comedy nor a love story, it had lot of Drama & no original comedy sequences. It is all about a struggling writer of a bollywood movie, Akshaye Khanna (Shekar) who is very innovative in his writings & his ‘chawl’ people considers him as their own family member and help him to direct his movie later.

The entire location seems to be very showcased type in the movie. The movie seem to be with no kind of feelings indulged in its songs as the lyrics considered no meaning at all. Arshad warsi (Raju) one of the finest in his comedic timing is not to be seen in his prime form in this movie, as he played the role of a successful actor who prefers to take a shortcut always in his life and finds lot of gain and fame at the beginning but could find no shortcut at the end.

Amrita Arora (Maansi) is looking stunning in the movie with her perfect figure and sexy look. She played the role of a successful actress in the movie who loves Shekhar (Akshaye) and soon marries him but as every common love story, they could not live happily together. To help these characters Chunky Pandey played the role of a teacher, who guides all on various aspects of acting and later becomes an assistant to Arshad warsi.

The first half of the movie is all about the success of Arshad warsi, who takes a direct shortcut in his life to become an actor by ruining his own friends life Akshaye Khanna and the second half is all about Raju's success and Shekar's broken marriage and failure.

The movie seems to be not that great but ok, audience can go and watch it once. The first half could be interesting but later the second half of the movie drags & is a bit dull. But considering the entire package of the Movie it could be one time entertainment show.

A poor comedy which discloses its humor plot after two hours.

Anil Kapoor Production comes up with a poorly executed, so called comedy, which doesn’t even a single comic sequence to talk about. In fact it simply should not be called a comedy at all, since the main plot with the actual fun element unbelievably comes after 2 long hours in the film. And before that you are enforced to see all the boring, predictable and badly written scenes which completely fail to generate any kind of interest in the viewers.

The first half talks about friends betraying each other and a stolen script which makes the career of Arshad Warsi and ruins the future of Akshay Khanna. Along with this, the love angle has Amrita Rao playing a well known actress and Chunky Pandey playing the acting guru, who manages Arshad Warsi’s filmi career. In spite of having a bollywood based concept, the movie doesn’t excite you at all and even makes you feel uneasy watching the dull and unentertaining portrayal of the movie world. Moreover it was quite weird to see Amrita Rao dancing with veterans, Anil Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt in a routine item song. Amrita just looked like a tiny young girl caught between two huge grown up giants on the dancing floor.

Director Neeraj Vora, who is known for some worth mentioning associations in his career, delivers a very childish kind of product having nothing to offer in the name of comedy. Aneez Bazmee, the writer, seems to have written the project in his extra time without any special efforts put in for entertainment. And due to this lack of spirit in the project, all the actors simply fail to deliver any noticeable performance in the movie, acting simply as their routine job.

Arshad Warsi, tends to go overboard this time and is not able to entertain. Akshay Khanna is again loud as seen in some of his earlier performances. Chunky Pandey opts for more hamming in his scenes and that too without any comedy. Amrita Rao, finally decides to shed a few clothes and agrees to become the glamour element in the movie (though she signs only few good projects?). The rest of the cast is just there as needed with only one sweet performance by Tiku Talsania, who plays the soft hearted movie producer helping Akshay. Cinematography and Music department has got nothing more than the usual stuff to offer. So a good song needed to push a big project now a days, was surely missing.

Story wise, the plot did have the required punch for a comedy, but it was not incorporated properly as expected from Neeraj. The movie keeps on swinging between various genres as a pendulum. And in the first half it more looks like an emotional drama than a comedy. Actually, the main comic part of the movie starts just before the climax when Akshay decides to complete his movie in an unusual style. But till then it becomes too late to cover up the mess.

However, may be this main comedy plot in the story, was pushed deliberately towards the end, as it is highly inspired from the movie “Bowfinger” released in 1999. Even the tag line “The Con is on” is also borrowed as it is from the English Comedy featuring Steve Martin & Eddie Murphy.

With “Global Awareness” regarding Indian Movies, growing stronger than ever before, the producers may have decided to use less of the inspired plot and therefore added more angles into the story other than that. In any case, the main point is that the most entertaining part of the story, which could have resulted in a good comedy, has been strangely used only towards the climax. And due to this, the movie cannot be tagged as a Bollywood Comedy from any angle.

Though, officially “Shortkut” is said to be the remake of a Malayalam movie “Udayananu Tharam”, but that too was released in 2005, much later than “Bowfinger” in 1999. So here’s another movie from a big production house with a stamp of “Inspired One”. If asked for a recommendation, I would simply request to opt something else for an entertaining weekend.
