Fashion Week

Overall Rating
Bangalore Fashion Week is running full steam ahead as planned with apparently 32 designers having confirmed participation. Now do not ask us the names because just as the rest of the world, we are as clueless about the names of the '32 minus 8' designers. Ask about the names of the remaining 24 designers, and no one seems to be willing to be giving in. The four-day extravaganza will apparently be a host to some of the country's top-notch designers, several upcoming designers, leading buyers, and some of the country's best known models.

We spoke to Gouri Kapur one of the board members of BFW, "We have gotten a lot of entries but have yet to shortlist the final designers who will be showcasing at the event. We will be concentrating on quality. We will also be giving a platform to young designers."The members on the BFW board who will be excising this quality control include Rahul Dev Shetty, Sheetal Sharma (last minute entry as the choreographer of the show), Sanchitta Ajjampur, Gouri Kapur, Mirza L Baig, Siddharth Mahajan and Feroze Khan.

Manovi raj Khosla, who is a participating member, has done a turnabout from his stand where he earlier thought that the idea of having BFW was 'non starter' in the first place! Now he changes sides and says, "Hey it's Bangalore so how can I not do it! I have confirmed to the organizers verbally about an hour ago (relatively speaking) but have not signed on the dotted line yet. I will be showcasing my own collection comprising of both menswear and womens wear. As of now I do not have any showstopper in mind. Commenting on the line-up of designers at Bangalore Fashion Week, Feroz Khan - Creative Director, Dream Merchants said, "Designers are the soul of any fashion event, and we are indeed glad to host some of the country's leading names." Apparently the ramp will have no stars as according to some board members, the stars take away the limelight from the designer. The star of every show will be the designer.

The participating designers at BFW are also being promised exposure and access to a selection of Indian and international buyers from South Africa, Japan, Europe amongst other parts of the fashion world. Well, it's a sponsored event and 'talks still on for the main sponsor', even though there are exactly 12 days left for the gala event! Well, we sincerely wish them the very best, even though the need of yet another fashion week in India is yet to be justified! Oh yeah, by the way all eight participating designers have been invited to showcase and as such do not have to pay any fee. On the contrary, it's an all expense paid trip ahem platform for them. The eight confirmed names are.
1. Rocky
2. Manoviraj Khosla
3. Abdul Halder
4. Jatin Kochhar
5. Samant Chauhan
6. Abhi Rahul
7. Raj and Neetu Shroff
8. Jason and Anshu Arora Sen

Some of the worlds most beautiful fashion icons emerged in the 1960s, one of which was Audrey Hepburn. Her most iconic looks have inspired Fashion Designers Leena Taneja for her SS'10 collection showcased yesterday at KFW. The audience couldn't resist applauding when the show incepted with lovely music from 'My Fair Lady' unveiling beautiful elegant tunics and embellished dresses in acrylics, knitted cottons, metallic foilings of silver, copper and gold; all accompanied with various cloche hats and stilettos perfectly working to mimic Miss Hepburns iconic look.

Actor Paoli Dam in a copper metallic tunic, bouffant hairstyle with the long Hepburn style cigarette just stopped the show. Followed by Zubair Kirmani the next show witnessed his signature line, quite structured and geometric prints with simple cuts and silhouettes. Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Amaan Ali Bangash and Ayaan Ali Banga shacted as shows toppers, carrying off sherwan is with churidaars. The evening came to an end with directional designs by Wendell Rodricksas accustomed. His simple, chic and light collection created out of purely cotton and shear cotton wooed the audience. Knitted cottons in pastels, beige, brown, grey and purple in various combinations were the palette of the season. Leading to a modern chic direction, the designer unveiled the geometric cuts converting into drapes inspired from sarees, and wrap arounds had truly international appeal. Sheath dresses, cowl neck poncho dress and long tunics with side cuts were few predominant silhouettes by Rod ricks this time.

Some French audience members said, "We were really expecting a good show and I am happy after witnessing the collections. From Ritu, Rocky to Wendell, all of them were at par." Except the little lack in management which caused little delay in each show, first day of KFW SS’10went all well with fabulous collections showcases by leading designers of the industry. Log on tomorrow for more in Kolkata Fashion Week. Paying a tribute to Indian crafts, especially those from Kolkata, the legendry designer of Indian textiles 'Ritu Kumar' opened 'Kolkata Fashion Week' (KFW) on 9th of Sep at ITC Sonar Bangla. Ms. Kumar's show commenced with a recital of morning raga, which magically set the mood.

There was not a single colour untouched by the designer for this couture line, including the non-colours, 'white & black'. The assortment consisted of pastels, stark red, emerald green, coral red, maroon, and many more from the palette. Bringing out the exotic essence; gowns, lehengas, sarees, and kalidar suits well teamed up with flared trousers and zouaves set the ramp on fire. Zardozi, kantha, brocade work, mokaish work, precious stones and diamonds embedded in net, georgette, shear cotton and silk were used to achieve the royal Indian look. The surprise element of the show interprets the Indian aesthetic but this time in coats, trench and bomber jackets, all trimmed with leather and worn with tights and boots. You would be surprised to know designer Ritu Kumar has printed motifs from a few of her paintings on the silk that was used to construct these coats. The stream also consisted of peshwaz painstakingly printed in the hand block areas of sanganer, gararas and khara dupattas from the home of Nizams.

On the similar track, designer Rocky Scarried forward the soiree with his contemporary Indian collection. The range started from pastels, baby pinks, red, emerald green, orange, citrus yellow and beige. Fusion bridal wear including lehengas, kalidar suits and sarees in net, georgette and chiffon weaved a beautiful story of elegance and glamour together. Special brocade stole, embroidery, and sequined work added on to the look. Cotton sherwan is with crinkled stoles and embellishments stole everyone's heart. Oozing panache cricketer Virendra Sehwag walked the runway carrying luxurious Sherwani which most likely lead hearts to skip a beat! By and large a good opening to the 2nd season of KFW, stylekandy.com is provide you to fashion and beauty related information if you want to get more information you visit our site.

Best of Bobby's

Overall Rating

Bobby, with Nanhe Jaisalmer has already proved that his best expressions and consummate acting skills are explicit and commendable when he is with a child.

Surprisingly it is the same supporting characters around him in his latest YEH VADA RAHA also.  With Dwij boy around, Bobby is at his very best once again!  It's a very touching story adopted from a Russian story theme but director Samir has done a good job.

Bobby is a doctor who meets with an accident and is paralysed neck below.  He loses all hope of recuperation, refuses food and medicine and gives up on existence.  fortunately there is this child, who descends on him like a saviour with his bubbly talk, cheerful smiles and makes live a sporty make believe outside world with his chirpy reports looking out a window.  The bed ridden doctor finally breaks through his misery, submits for treatment and is on his way back to normalcy just when his child friend has excused himself for a short break saying that he has to attend his school exam.  This is moving denouement of the story.  Watch it and you'll be in tears!!!

Bobby, you're at your very best!  Kudos to you...........

"Vaada Raha" is good

Overall Rating

I thought the movie was okay, but the only problem was the script. The jodi of Samir Karnik and Bobby Deol has returned after Nanhe Jaisalmar’ and ‘Heroes’. The jodi really doesn't work as both films failed. But "Vaada Raha" isn't that bad like people are saying. The story is touching. It is about  Duke Chawla (Bobby Deol) who is a successful doctor. Duke is doing well in both his professional as well as personal life. He is in deep love with Nalini (Kangna Ranaut) whom he is to marry soon. He has a pet dog whom he loves and cares like his family member. As preconceived, misfortune awaits the protagonist and he meets with an accident. Though he narrowly escapes death, he could not stand to the blow of destiny which leaves him paralyzed from neck down.  He could have at least fought with his condition if Nalini had stood by his side. To his shock, he finds that his dream girl ditches him in time of need and goes away from him. This part of the movie fails to convince the audience as it seems highly unacceptable that someone who loved so deeply walks off one’s life so abruptly.  Anger and frustration overcome the best part of Duke and he starts wishing to die rather than living this type of life. It is at this point that the child Roshan (Dwij Yadav) walks into his life. Despite initial resentment, Duke begins to grow close to the boy. Roshan acts as the moral booster for Duke and he regains his hope and interest to live. Gradually, his condition improves and he gains sensation in his hands and legs. Another misery befalls him when one day the doctor tries to make him walk with the help of clutches. Watch the movie to find out what is the other misfortune for this tragic hero, Duke.

The film is a little bit too unbelievable. Kangana's character leaves him and in the end marries him despite betrayal. How can you marry somebody who left you when they needed you most? The kids talks like a guru. How can a child talk so like a big adult? He is only 10! The music is okay while the script is faulty, but it works.  Coming to the star cast, Bobby Deol and Dwij are perhaps the only actors in the movie whom the audience will appreciate. Kangna is a wonderful actress but her talent is not exploited properly in the movie. Samir Karnik should have used Kangana's talented to his advantage. Mohnish Behl has also done a good job, though he could have done a better job provided the script and direction was apt to mark.

Overall, the film is okay.  The audience may like it, they may not

VAADA RAHA : Lacks the emotional depth and logic.

Overall Rating

Samir Karnik’s latest venture “Vaada Raha” walks on the same path of partly good movies as seen in his earlier projects such as “Nanhe Jaisalmer” & “Heroes”. Selecting a fresh emotional subject for a film is as easy as reading a new story book. But transforming the same story into a worth watching movie is quite a different game altogether. This time too, Samir comes with a novel plot inspired by a Russian story based on the relationships between two patients in a hospital. But as experienced before, he again struggles in converting the emotional storyline into an equally transforming movie.

Commencing with a slow start, the main hospital plot gets into the picture after quite a while. Until then, the viewer helplessly keeps trying to guess the real catch of the story, which actually revolves around a well known doctor (Bobby Deol), who accidentally reaches the hospital bed after a deadly road mishap. Completely paralyzed after the accident, he is not able to move any part of the body other than his face and also gets dumped by his fiancée (Kangna Ranaut) due to his current dependent state. But the real plot starts later on, when a small boy (Dwij Yadav), who is also there in the hospital, becomes the new friend of the doctor and motivates him to fight with his own destiny with a newly found courage and inner strength.

The plot had a great potential for an off-beat kind of movie, close to the genre of “Anand” and “Mili”. But in order to make it commercially viable, the director goes on to add un-necessary songs into the narration and also comes up with a highly unethical climax where Bobby again reunites with her selfish fiancée who left him alone at the most inappropriate time of his life, when she was needed the most. Moreover, the main focus of the movie, moving around the relationship between Bobby & Dwij Yadav, also fails to impress the viewer completely. Dwij has a great confidence and that may be the reason why Samir keeps on repeating him in his movies. But in “Vaada Raha” he is made to act more than his age, speaking such mature dialogues, suggesting that he is more intelligent than all the other grown-ups roaming around in the hospital as doctors and nurses. Though he has acted well, but I think a more soft spoken tone in his dialogues could have connected with the audience better.

Bobby Deol, tries his level best and gives a good performance. But he gets many half-heartedly written scenes, where he suddenly starts walking after a severe paralysis attack, can easily facilitate a life saving operation dictating the doctors from T.V. monitors, reaches a quick conclusion on cancer cure after studying only a few books and goes on to marry the same girl who ditched him big time. Kangna Ranaut and her talent is simply wasted in an insignificant role. Mohnish Behl is ok and so are the other character artists playing their small parts. Cinematography is just fine but music has nothing great to offer and has only one song reaching the above average level.

With very few worth mentioning scenes (like the ones featuring the pet dog), “Vaada Raha” falters mainly in its writing department. The child factor and his trauma are not used so impressively into the script. The emotional sequences and the tragedies are unable to touch you deep inside. As a result the movie keeps on floating on the surface and fails to leave a heartwarming effect on the viewer. You can watch it only if you are tired of watching the usual love stories, underworld and murder mysteries.

Vaada Raha - I Promise
Sep 12, 2009

Duke Chawla (Bobby Deol) has a successful medical career, a doting girlfriend and dreams that are coming true until one night changes it all. A fatal car crash leaves him neck down paralyzed and puts an end to his perfect life. A man who was once an epitome of hope sees death as a better option than to live like a vegetable. The rest of the story is how Roshan (Dwij Yadav), a young boy dispels the darkness from Duke’s life by teaching him to love life.

The story is ok but the screenplay and the direction are amateurish. The movie is filled with cheesy scenes and silly comedy. The movie is basically Anand rehashed with the little kid playing Anand and Bobby playing a paralyzed Amitabh. Roshan narrates the events going on outside Duke's room window (in what clearly looks like a set). One can clearly make out that the kid is lying. There is a small twist in the end which one can probably guess from a mile.
