"Ek Niranjan" is entertaining
Oct 30, 2009

Movie: Ek Niranjan Compliment the user
Overall Rating
Ek Niranjan” is surely one of those ventures that follow the tried and tested formula of movie making. The movie has hardly anything new to offer [in matters of content]. That however, does not prove to be the saving grace of the movie. The usually animated expressions that reflects on the countenance of the talented actress, are amiss here and she just walks through with a lack luster performance.

Even then, the movie somehow manages to up the entertainment quotient that it is meant to deliver, all credits to the lead actor of the film- Prabhas! He proves once again just how much he has grown in terms of his acting skills. Prabhas ushers in a breath of freshness in the otherwise mundane story of “Ek Niranjan“.

Ek Niranjan” is clearly divided in to two halves. The first that focuses on the lighter aspects like the introduction of the lead pairs as well as all the other characters of the movie, to the audience. The second half of the movie follows a different note all together. It portrays action and oodles of violence.

Puri Jagannath has done a commendable job as a director. Known for his stylish ventures, he chose not to let down his target audience in terms of expectations. In previous cases too, the Puri- Prabhas combo has proved to be quite a hit and this time, from all the positive airs surrounding it, it is easy to say that the film would score well with the audience. Certainly Kangana Ranaut will be an added attraction for “Ek Niranjan“. She does good in some parts and she is really pretty

"Vaada Raha" is good

Movie: Vaada raha... i promise Compliment the user
Overall Rating

I thought the movie was okay, but the only problem was the script. The jodi of Samir Karnik and Bobby Deol has returned after Nanhe Jaisalmar’ and ‘Heroes’. The jodi really doesn't work as both films failed. But "Vaada Raha" isn't that bad like people are saying. The story is touching. It is about  Duke Chawla (Bobby Deol) who is a successful doctor. Duke is doing well in both his professional as well as personal life. He is in deep love with Nalini (Kangna Ranaut) whom he is to marry soon. He has a pet dog whom he loves and cares like his family member. As preconceived, misfortune awaits the protagonist and he meets with an accident. Though he narrowly escapes death, he could not stand to the blow of destiny which leaves him paralyzed from neck down.  He could have at least fought with his condition if Nalini had stood by his side. To his shock, he finds that his dream girl ditches him in time of need and goes away from him. This part of the movie fails to convince the audience as it seems highly unacceptable that someone who loved so deeply walks off one’s life so abruptly.  Anger and frustration overcome the best part of Duke and he starts wishing to die rather than living this type of life. It is at this point that the child Roshan (Dwij Yadav) walks into his life. Despite initial resentment, Duke begins to grow close to the boy. Roshan acts as the moral booster for Duke and he regains his hope and interest to live. Gradually, his condition improves and he gains sensation in his hands and legs. Another misery befalls him when one day the doctor tries to make him walk with the help of clutches. Watch the movie to find out what is the other misfortune for this tragic hero, Duke.

The film is a little bit too unbelievable. Kangana's character leaves him and in the end marries him despite betrayal. How can you marry somebody who left you when they needed you most? The kids talks like a guru. How can a child talk so like a big adult? He is only 10! The music is okay while the script is faulty, but it works.  Coming to the star cast, Bobby Deol and Dwij are perhaps the only actors in the movie whom the audience will appreciate. Kangna is a wonderful actress but her talent is not exploited properly in the movie. Samir Karnik should have used Kangana's talented to his advantage. Mohnish Behl has also done a good job, though he could have done a better job provided the script and direction was apt to mark.

Overall, the film is okay.  The audience may like it, they may not

Movie: Aa Dekhen Zara Compliment the user
Overall Rating

Aa Dekhen Zara is such a nice thriller just like Johnny Gaddar. Like it has a lot of action and it is just the movie. The movie is about The out-of-work, freelance wild-life photographer hero of the film, Ray ( Neil Nitin Mukesh ), inherits such a magical, antique-looking camera from his granddad and puts it to good use.

Through photographs taken by the cam, Ray takes a peek into the future and bets on horses, lotteries and stock market. Soon his cupboard is stashed with wads of cash. Penury days well behind him, Ray buys a new house, a swanky car, and everything else that easy-earned money can buy. But there’s trouble. Money can’t buy love. Ray's girlfriend Simi (Bipasha Basu) feels neglected and  even as Ray tries to win Simi’s love, there are other people who come to know about the camera and want it at any cost. And then, to Ray’s horror, the camera predicts his doom. The music is so great!!!!!!!!

I love Gazab and Mohabbat Aapse. Bipasha Basu is so sexy and she can dance. Sophie Chaudhary looks beauty, but she is only an eye-candy. Neil Mukesh owns the film. The performance by all the cast is great. The director, Jehangir Surti tries a lot with this film and plz, plz go and see it.

Movie: Jai Veeru Compliment the user
Overall Rating

Without dragging it for long, let me put things simple and straight. There is no story in Jai Veeru. Few senseless sequences are knitted along with few songs, some horrible action and some twists. The two main characters (Jai Veeru) are highly disappointing and there is hardly any scope for us to bond with the two.  The first thirty minutes of the movie is just spent in jumping from one track to another, while a strong friendship blooms between the two main characters over just four scenes. Veeru (Kunal) hits on a girl at a club and in attempts to impress her he falls in trouble with her four brothers. Jai (Fardeen) saves him from the hefty men. And soon they become best friends over a silly fight and a can of beer. Then we are introduced to a gangster Tejpal (Arbaaz Khan) who is on the hit list of criminals of the Police Force. We hardly see him doing any brutal killing or a big illegal dealing except for a scene of some fake currency business, and he is considered a cold-blooded criminal. And his side kicks who look like ill-nutritioned grown ups just cant get one shot right.

In attempts to stuff in comedy, action, emotions, romance et al…  Puneeth Sira fails as a director. With a mindless story and a pace that picks up and drops periodically, Jai Veeru is a complete dud.   Dialogues are lame and don’t seem to have any spark in them. Action sequences are dull. Music by Bappi Lahiri that comprises most part of the runtime is average. Although the tracks are not very refreshing, ‘Tenu Leke’ and ‘Sufi’ stand out. Cinematography too is mere average.

Performances in Jai Veeru are a let down too.  Fardeen as Jai and Kunal as Veeru are a scorn to the legendry characters. Fardeen just as usual hams throughout the movie. Kunal is equally competent in putting across a poor performance. Arbaaz Khan sleep walks through the role. Dia Mirza and Anjana Sukhani are just eye candies and have nothing much to do.

Although, I like style and Kunal Khemu, Dia Mirza, it isn't all that bad.

Okay, but Not So Well

Movie: Delhi 6 Compliment the user
Overall Rating

This movie is okay! I don't say bad. But it is not as good as Sonam Kapoor has been saying. Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra thinks out of the box and it's more than evident now. First AKS, then RANG DE BASANTI, now DELHI 6. A two-liner of the story may give you an impression that it's similar to UTV's earlier outing SWADES, directed by Ashutosh Gowariker: An American of Indian origin returns to his roots and decides to stay back in India. But DELHI 6 bites more than it can chew. DELHI 6 tells the story of a young American boy Roshan [Abhishek Bachchan] of Indian origin, who comes to India for the first time, to drop his ailing grandmother [Waheeda Rehman]. She wants to retire and spend the last leg of her life back home; dissolving into the soil she was born in.

In America, having led a very western lifestyle, Roshan is not familiar with the sites and smells, the food and culture, the religion and beliefs, this huge melting pot that India is. He believes that Dadi had left her family and loved ones back in America, only to realize that how wrong he was.
The warmth and affection of the neighbourhood embraces him with open arms. Amidst all this he meets the beautiful Bittu [Sonam Kapoor], who wants to break free from the typical Indian social structure, to whom Roshan is destined to lose his heart. That Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra is an accomplished storyteller is evident in several individualistic scenes. Note the scene when Vijay Raaz slaps Abhishek and Abhishek slaps him back. Also, portions in the second hour, when a Baba [Akhilendra Mishra] triggers off the Mandir-Masjid talk and divides the two communities, is very well structured. The sequences are disturbing and the writers and director succeed in exposing the fickle-minded people residing in the locality.

But the screenplay isn't foolproof. The romantic track is the weakest link in the enterprise. The love story falls flat. Also, the ending is so abstract that an average moviegoer would find it difficult to comprehend what the actual culmination is. The sequence in the end, when Amitabh and Abhishek have a conversation, looks weird. In fact, ridiculous. What was the need to have this sequence? It makes no sense. Even the Ram Leela sequences, interspersed at regular intervals, are forced in the screenplay. The music is okay, but I do not like "Masakali" or "Rehna Tu", but I like "Dilli 6".

On the whole, DELHI 6 has a terribly boring beginning [first hour], an absorbing middle [second half] and a weak end [climax]. Sonam tries, Abhishek owns the film and the ret of them ain't so special.

P.S

COULDN'T GET PICS, SO EXCLUDE THIS ONE!!

Movie: Billu Barber Compliment the user
Overall Rating

Wow, after watching this, I feel like I have seen a whole new world. The weather was so cold, but watching this made my body even warmer. The movie is so excellent and don't say because it is a Shahrukh Khan  film, it is beautiful because of the nice performances. Priyadarshan also did a great job transforming his mind point into such a great movie - You can tell he has visualized the movie before filming it.

Billu Barber tells the story of a simple ordinary man, Bilas Rao Pardesi [Irrfan Khan], living in a small town with his wife Bindiya [Lara Dutta] and two kids. His life undergoes a drastic change as superstar Sahir Khan [Shah Rukh Khan] visits the village for a film shoot. Everything changes. Things go from good to bad to worse to good again. The story takes an interesting turn when Billu's life collides with the superstar's. And the assorted characters -- right from an aspiring poet/lyricist [Rajpal Yadav], to a stingy money lender [Om Puri], to the principal of the school [Rasika Joshi] -- everyone wants favours from Billu. These characters only make Billu more interesting.

Priyadarshan is adept at handling relationships and with Billu Barber, he proves he can handle emotions with as much flourish as comedy. To tell a simple, uncomplicated story, without the usual frills, is an arduous task indeed and Priyadarshan tackles the material with remarkable ease. The humour here is subtle, not loud, and a constant smile remains on your face all through. The screenplay is gripping and the cinematography was carefully done making a wonderful job.

The music is the best part of this review. I am in love with "You Get Me Rocking and Reeling", then I love "Mar Jaani" and "Love Mera Hit Hit". The music is so energetic and all the item numbers sparkle. My personal favorite is Deepika Padukone because she looks so sexy, but I love Kareena Kapoor's too because she shines and also Priyanka because she glows with finesse. "Ae Aa O" is also a great track. The entire album is memoriable.

Irfan Khan is so real in his character and we all know Shahrukh did great. In fact, it is better than "Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi". Lara Dutta springs a pleasant surprise. She goes through her part with complete understanding. Om Puri is excellent. Rasika Joshi is too good. Rajpal Yadav is really funny in the penultimate scene, when he recites a film song of an shahrukh film.

Overall, the movie is fabulous, energetic, great performances and it is recommended highly as a family movie. It will make you smile. Just like me while writing this review. WATCH IT!

Movie: Dev D Compliment the user
Overall Rating

This movie is nothing like Devdas. This movie is rubbish,  but it is not so bad. The movie is dark. Anurag Kashyap does try to give out a message, but this movie makes Devdas look bad. In Kashyap's DEV D, Dev is into drugs and vodka. Paro sends her nude pic to Dev via email and later, wants Dev to have sex with her in the fields. Chanda, a hooker, indulges in phone sex mainly. Clearly, Kashyap's Dev, Paro and Chanda are audacious and rebellious.

Son of a rich industrialist, who is sent away to London when he was 12, Dev [Abhay Deol] returns to his hometown and to Paro [Mahi Gill], his childhood sweetheart. Inseparable as they seem, a misunderstanding puts their lives in a tizzy; Paro is married off to someone else and Dev goes into severe depression. Not one to take on responsibilities for his acts, Dev digs deep into drugs and alcohol for salvation. He stays away from home, but his finances still come from a doting father.
Lenny [Kalki] likes to live her life on the edge -- a rich student with a penchant for adventure. After a devastating MMS scandal, she's abandoned by her family and is forced into isolation. As a runaway, she finds shelter with Chunni, a pimp. With great determination and inner strength she adopts an alter ego -- Chanda. As Chanda, she gets to be a high profile escort by night, while Lenny remains a college student by day. At this juncture, Dev enters her life…

Despite the fact that you know the basic plotline of DEV D even before the reels begin to unfold, what you're keen to know is, how has Kashyap executed the subject? The sequences between Dev and Paro at the start are captivating and the volatile relationship they share makes you realize that Kashyap is on the right track. Note the altercation between Dev and Paro, which prompts Paro to marry Bhuvan, who's much older to her, besides being a father of two.

Amit Trivedi's music sounds good to the ears. 'Emosanal Attyachaar' is already popular, besides a couple of other songs ['Nayan Tarse' and 'Pardesi']. But there're too many songs in the narrative. Rajeev Ravi's cinematography captures the rustic look of North India well.
Abhay Deol is natural. Mahi is decent, while Kalki shows sparks in a few scenes only. The balance cast, including the actor playing Chunni, are strictly okay. I give credit to Kalki though, she tried!

BORING!

Movie: Victory Compliment the user
Overall Rating

I had thought that by promoting this movie very well, it would do good, but it already started terrible. The movie is just not that good. "Victory" may not be a true-life account of any one person, but you can't help but draw parallels with people who led a wild life off the field. Also, any sports-based film works if it arouses the right emotions and VICTORY does so towards the final moments. But there's a hitch. The film could've done with a shorter running time [instead of approx. 2.35 hours] and a tight script. More on that later! VICTORY tells the story of Vijay Shekhawat [Harman Baweja], who hails from Jaisalmer. Soon, he becomes India's latest world-class batting sensation and is catapulted to superstardom.

However, the glam and glitter makes the young, vulnerable Vijay stray from his true vocation of cricket. Unfortunately, this leads to a loss of focus and to a miserable drop in his performance. But by the time Vijay realizes his mistake, he finds himself thrown out of the Indian cricket team. Suddenly, the hero becomes a villain in everyone's eyes. His father [Anupam Kher] suffers a paralytic stroke. This tragedy awakens Vijay's conscience. He wants to redeem himself in the eyes of his father and every Indian. Against great odds, he once again makes it back to the Indian team and gets to play in the finals of the Champion's Trophy against Australia, where he plays a stellar role in enabling India to win the Trophy.

Towards the end, it tended to get better, but it still boring. I just was so disappointed because I invested all my time believing in it. Harman Baweja improved. His debut was terrible and this one is terrible, but he looks much better. Amrita Rao did excellent, although she isn't the main star. Anupam Kher does good too.

The music is average. I love "Balla Utha Chaka Laga", but the rest is just okay. The movie is sour boring. Don't waste your money on it!

Great Movie

Movie: Luck by Chance Compliment the user
Overall Rating

After "Raaz - The Mystery Continues" did great the box-office, the box-office now awaits for "Luck By Chance" to dominate the box-office. The film is good and I MEAN GOOD! "Luck By Chance" taps almost every important facet of Bollywood and presents assorted characters you've encountered some time in life: An over-ambitious aspirant who knows to make the right moves; an actress trying hard to get that big break, even if she has to compromise; an icon of the 1970s who desperately wants her daughter to be a star; a producer who looks at riding on big names, script be damned; a failed actor now looking at direction to redeem his career.

One of the prime reasons why "Luck By Chance" works is because the writing which is by Zoya Akhtar is simply wonderful. Right from the characters, to the individualistic scenes, to the way Zoya puts them in a sequence, it is easily one of the most cohesive scripts this side of the Atlantic. The movie is about Sona (Konkona Sen Sharma) who dreams of becoming a Bollywood star and she meets Vikram (Farhan Akhtar) who also wants to be a star and they get together. It then explains about a filmmaker called Rolly (Rishi Kapoor) who is making a movie with a superstar called Zaffar Khan (Hrithik Roshan), but soon Zaffar opts out of the film and now Rolly has to find a new star. Vikram auditions and now the rest is for you to watch.

LUCK BY CHANCE picks up characters straight out of life and that's the beauty of this script. The interesting part is that each of these characters has a story running parallel to the main story. Although the writing is foolproof, this review would be incomplete if one failed to acknowledge a number of scenes that are the hallmark of this enterprise...

  • Note the sequence when Rishi Kapoor breaking down after Hrithik has walked out of his movie. It moves you!
  • On the lighter side, Farhan strikes a conversation with Dimple at a movie premiere and extols lavish praises on her.
  • Much later, an angry Dimple instructs Isha to patch up with Farhan, soon after Farhan and Isha's debut film has been declared a success. Watch the moments when Dimple recalls her early years.
  • The sequence featuring SRK.
  • Farhan Akhtar does excellent! I have to give it to him. He is a talented director and he is  doing better as an actor. Konkona Sen Sharma is so believable and so dramatic, what an actress. Rishi Kapoor is great. Isha Sharvani does her part well. Hrithik Roshan is so handsome and did so well. Hrithik Roshan is truly wonderful. Note the sequence when he strikes a conversation with Karan Johar, only to realize that he himself had paved the way for Farhan in the industry. Only an accomplished actor could've handled this sequence with aplomb. Amongst the A-listers who make fleeting appearances in the film, the one who registers the maximum impact is Shah Rukh Khan.

    Movie: Raaz Compliment the user
    Overall Rating
    Story
    Cast Performance
    Soundtrack
    Cinematography

At first, I thought that maybe this movie won't be good, but after hearing "Maahi" and "Soniyo" and "Kaisa Yeh Raaz Hai" then seeing the promos, I knew I was wrong. The movie is excellent! Kangana Ranaut did a great job! She owned the film. Her look was thrilling and her expressions were great. Emraan Hashmi has improved on his acting and he really gave off a performance. Adhyayan did terrible in "Haal-E-Dil", but in this film, he proved he has a spot in Bollywood. A brooding artist Prithvi (Emraan), experiences mysterious & distressing visions about Nandita (Kangana), a woman he has never met, while he paints on canvas. Intrigued by these visions, Prithvi tracks her down and warns her that these are not merely paintings of her, but accidents that are waiting to happen! At first, Nandita refuses to believe him and dismisses him as an eccentric stalker. However, the striking resemblance between Prithvi's paintings and the near - death incidents in her life is hard to ignore. Haunted by a series of deathly and paranormal experiences, her reason crumbles in the face of fear. Now, one of Prithvi's paintings has revealed her as dead! The only way she can change her fate, is to unravel this mystery with his help, at the risk of alienating herself from her boyfriend, Yash, who is a rational and logical man. But he refuses to believe in Prithvi's premonitions. Will Nandita risk her love and her life to unravel this mystery? Is there no escape at all?

Mohit smartly builds up the atmosphere. Sample these: Emraan and Kangna's first encounter at a mall and minutes later, inside an elevator; the New Year bash when Kangna is 'attacked' by spirits; Kangna's experience in her bathtub and also when she looks at the mirror; Kangna almost jumping off a cliff; the highpoint sequence, when angry bulls attack Emraan and Kangna. Incredible sequences all! Mohit has handled the most difficult portions with panache. Horrifying? Certainly, in places, especially when an ATM turns nasty, a bunch of bisons turn murderous, Kangana gets transformed into an abusive man or has her wrists slit in the bath tub. The film however gets wrapped up in a clumsy climax, as most horror films do and does tend to drag in places. Although it is still a great movie, the clumsy climax does not effect the film that much. Kangana Ranaut and Adhyayan Suman in Raaz- The Mystery Continues

Kangana looks so fabulous in the film and her acting skills...lets not discuss that. She brings full power into her character. The movie is a must-watch. I don't care if the movie does bad at the box-office, it is good. The songs in the movie that really stand out are "Maahi Ve" which has already set the charts straight and "Soniyo" which is a romantic track that creates a new dimention in Bollywood filmi music. Another flaw is the ending, but that doesn't affect it either. To sum it all up, the movie is great and those simple flaws does not make the movie not get a 5 out of 5. Mohit deserves this as he has taken his time to make the horror genre stand out and it is one of the best Bollywood horror film since "Bhoot". Now after this, many directors will start making horror films. WATCH IT!
