comedy of 2009 is here and definitely not the one to be missed, if you have seen the likes of golmaal and dhamaal and liked them then this is the continuation of the madness, masti and mazza, go for it and have fun...

story is simple, with a friend like ajay devgun, fardeen does not need any enemies, he would encourage him to do all wrong things, tell all kind of lies... and the fun continues...

first things first, the movie really does not offer anything new that one should feel good about, i find that it was mili-bhagat of KJo and his gang along with some of the movie critics, to give a positive spin about the movie and then the ball keeps rolling... i mean movie is okay, strictly okay, nothing great that everyone is going ga-ga about (though sufficient feel-good factors in movie, that one feels happy after watching the movie)...

here are some points from my side

1. we have seen lakshya, that was much better

2. why does konkana fall in love with ranbir, we have one scene where kashmira shah is suggesting to hit on ranbir and so she starts getting attracted, i thought the intent was purely sexual when kashmira suggested it! or was it one outing with rahul khanna that made the choice by rejection (of rahul)... same way why does ranbir fall in love with konkana, was it the ohh-so-frank rejection in first placeby konkaka?

3. supriya pathak kapoor can surely do better than that, her character was just over the board, just not real to feel for, and we have seen enough of characters who cannot speak english, it was not funny at all!

4. the scene where ranbir is clicking pics of his neighbour and her son, that was supposed to realization point for ranbir, but it just lacked the depth to feel for...

5. the movie was predictable, you could make out whats going to happen

overall, save your money if you havent wasted it yet! i am sure there are better movies to come this year...

Movie: New York Compliment the user
Overall Rating
Story

the movie is pretty decent watch, its a story of 3 friends who have studied together, with the tinge of love triangle they separate from each other. now 7-8 years after that they are destined to meet, but its no co-incidence, its all planned and has the thrill factor in it. i wont go into details as it will be spoiling the story. it involves one friend trying to uncover the truth for himself and everyone else.

some good things about movie

1. good performances by neil, john, katrina (dude, she acted this time!) and irrfaan.

2. decent music, not great but good, khwam-khaah, bevajah is pretty good.

3. good storyline

though, i found the storyline not so convincing at times and conveniently assumed at others. especially the way things move so fast after the friends unite, end was reasonably filmy also. but still would recommend the movie for everyone. worth the money, its clean and can be watched with family :-).

99 is the flavor of the month

Movie: 99 Compliment the user
Overall Rating
Story
Cast Performance

first things first, 99 is the flavor of the month and given the current situation in b'wood for many more months to come, its a must watch, no actually its a MUST WATCH!... its crispy, twisty, smart dialogues and storyline and has very good performances...

i wont go into details of the story, but here are some fine points about the movie

1. its fun, real good comic dialogues and one liners

2. its crisp in storyline, dialogues, and creates butterflies in stomach with its twists, good narration in the background

3. real good performance from kunal, he looks too natural, cyrus did a great job, then boman and mahesh manjrekar did well, soha ali is okay, vinod khanna did look like filthy rich

4. its from the makes of flavors, the #1 american desi kind a story and its worth it!

5. the movie has its inspirations - partly from waisa bhi hota hai part - 2, and the pair of kunal and cyrus looks inspired by kung-fu hustle pair

6. captures some essence of delhi really well - you can smell it and say, yeah it does taste like delhi.

7. not a lot of music to cause distraction

8. very interesting casting in the beginning

9. you dont have much of choice, do you? with no new releases anywayz, you really dont want to miss this exceptionally well made movie ;-)

Movie: Ghajini Compliment the user
Overall Rating
Story
Cast Performance
Soundtrack
Cinematography

here are some reasons my side why you should watch ghajini

1. aamir khan, if anyone 'khan' do it, i 'khan' do it better :-). srk came up with 6 pack abs, sallu had them for long time so aamir goes 2 steps ahead and we have 8 pack abs now. the bod is joy to watch

2. aamir khan, fall for him yet again, he is looking so handsome in the jacket attire that its almost a fashion rage now, he is looking younger and really smart, he is just raising the bar for everyone :-).

3.  off course aamir khan for his acting, some of the expressions on his face are just too good for the moment.

4. innocent effervescense of asin, you might actually fall for her

5. songs and music, behka has aamir in 6 shades of spectrum, bachhu has 4 shades of asin and lattu has black and white look of jiah. guzarish is amazing, and other songs are beautiful as well, rahman rocks yet again!

6. story is reasonably exciting and hooking, though it has number of "bollywoodish" movie moments, e.g. the way aamir sees asin for first time, some others are spoilers so go watch them yourself.

7. jiah khan does a decent role

8. overall story is strong mix of a love story which is very cute and action thriller

9. the love story is partly inspired by an old hindi movie though, that was also cute.

10. in a shameless display of narcissism, watch it coz i am saying it :-).

i think it will be the biggest blockbuster of the year 2008, so 2008 ends with a bang, i think chandini chowk to china might open the year 2009 with a bang

Movie: Kidnap Compliment the user
Overall Rating
Story

first things first, the movie is a piece of trash and strictly avoidable... my take, save your 100-250 bucks on this one, u have better ways to spend it for sure...

i wont go into details of the story, would just dissect the movie...

the movie is supposed to be a thriller but it fails to deliver, at times sequences are childish and at times you just cant make out why is this happening... too many disturbances in between in form of songs and random action sequences and some emotional melodrama here and there... the movie just falls flat...

acting wise, imraan just fails big time... he has no expression on his face, no variation in his dialogue delivery... just keeps one frying pan expression and all dialogues in a straight same pitch sound, you just cant appreciate him or symphatize with the character... even the premise of why he is doing all this is so bad that you just dont see yourself with him... dude, you have a long way to go...

minissha and vidya are there for glamour, barely managing their roles... most of their role is actually skin show...

sanjay dutt is okay kinds, he is the guy who can do much better but stuck with a grade c director in a grade d plot executed with a grade f...

songs pop up anywhere and everywhere... mostly out of place... only one song is good but even for that the timing and sequence is so wierd that you wonder what is happening...

overall bad product and waste of time...

Movie: Singh Is Kinng Compliment the user
Overall Rating
Story
Cast Performance

Cinematography

ek color ke terah patte, lekin sab main bas ek kinng...

enjoy the main course of akki with tadka of katrina and other singhs... that is what this movie offers you... if u want to be in awe of akshay and wish to relish his screen presence, this one is for you...

the story starts off with a decent premise, a "do-gooder", "good for nothing" happy singh (akshay) has heart of gold, so he has to help everyone and anyone in his pind at any cost and the cost is generally higher than what his help offers... then u have a singh clan from the same village which is placed in australia and ruling the underworld... so far so good... some events lead akshay to go to australia and get the underworld gang back to village... so he goes and what follows is a partly "no-brainer", partly "high-on-emotion" and partly "namastey-london-hangover" movie... you can enjoy it in parts...

overall pretty decent movie, first half is good and entertaining, second half slackens a bit... music is good... akki clearly is in command through out the movie... rest of the cast does good (except ranvir shorey who is wasted utterly)... watchable from my side...

Movie: Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na Compliment the user
Overall Rating
Story
Cast Performance
Soundtrack
Cinematography

first things first, the storyline is bit cliched, you would have seen it in parts here and there... the treatment and some of the side-stories are diferent, which makes it light-hearted and more fun... overall a fun-filled film, bit romantic comedy, bit of frndship, some no-brainer stuff... can be watched once for sure... and if u fall for imraan then "baar, baar dekho" :-)...

the story is abt a grp of frnds and our leads are part of that... jai (imran) and aditi (genelia), they have been thickest of pals during college time for 5 yrs... they cant stay without each other but dont realize that its their love... they start off to find soul mate for each other and separate for a while but eventually realize their love... they have frnds like bombs, rotlu, jiggy etc for company in the story... the love interests they find for themselves initially are easy to dump kinds (another bollywood cliche)... you have sushant who you can dislike easily, you have meghna who does not want to see the reality... the interesting parts are some of the side stories... the "legends of ranjhod ke rathod", the three conditions to be part of the legend, naseer in an excellent cameo (partly inspired from hum-paanch), the lost brothers from rathore family, inspector waghmore... they all make film more fun and enjoyable and different from the regular cliche...

though one thing i felt was that more was "said" abt the jai and aditi's frndship that was shown on-screen...

talking abt the music, its awesome, rahman does exceptional job and all songs are good...

acting wise, imraan is good, he looks very chocolatee kinds... genelia is also good though i find trouble with her accent when she delivers dialogues in hindi, there is something missing... one guy who makes his mark is genelia's brother in the movie... he is soothingly cool whenever he speaks, i think he is smita patil and raj babbar's son and boy he is going to live upto the name... rest of the cast is good and does justice to their role...

the movie is set in UP and takes a dig on how crime became organized to run business of real estate, railway constructions, kidnappings etc etc... then how a single incident led to formation of special task force and how ajay (arshad) leads the team of cops to take on the organized crime syndicate and primarily gajraj singh (sushant singh)... apparently its based on reality in UP...

overall awesome performance by arshad as a cop, the guy shows his potential and i really wonder why bollywood does not offer arshad roles like these... and arshad is equally matched by sushant singh... then you have awesome narration by pankaj kapur, he plays a very important role as well in the movie... movie's story moves fast and is exciting thruout, slick narration... watch it to enjoy what bollywood has to offer...

Overall Rating
Story
Cast Performance

the story is about a young and careless boy sanjay lal sharma (aamir)... its set in dehradun where there are lots of colleges, rajput college being the most high end and model being the most low end... queen's college is girl's college and every boy is interested in it... aamir studies in model college along with his elder brother ratan (mamik), his father runs a canteen in the down town kind of area... these colleges compete with each other in sports events and most important being the cycle race in the valley... aamir is careless, liar, bad in studies and does not take responsibilities... the story evolves as aamir manages to make frnds with devika (pooja bedi) in whom shekhar (deepak tijori) from rajput is interested... this conflict in interest leads them to take head on with each other... ayesha jhulka plays love interest of aamir...

overall very good performance by aamir, ayesha, mamik... music is very good... story is fun and emotional... the nail biting cycle race towards the end is too good... if you havent seen it yet, you are missing something from bollywood...

Movie: Sunday Compliment the user
Overall Rating

first things first, this movie makes my start of 2008 :-)... overall very much enjoyable and mast timepass... the story is reasonably connected although has elements of (enjoyable) skits... awesome performance by arshad, that guy is one man army... give him good script and crisp dialogues and he can steal the show... very well complimented by irfan khan, with his typical ishtyle of dialogue delivery they make a terrific pair... ajay devgan has done pretty good and so has his assistant... ayesha has done decent job...  overall movie is comic thriller, very good comedy, decent thrill as the pieces connect but a bit okayish end... songs and music is okay... dialogues are crisp, fresh and funny...

the story is abt ayesha who works as a dubbing artist and one fine weekend her sunday goes missing... she does not remember what she did... ajay is a acp and starts investigating the case... as the pieces connect its fun... with laugh riot by arshad and irrfan coming on and off... the thrill factor is also okayish but take the movie more as comedy with some thrill...

if you like skittish comedies, this one is for u...

Movie: Bombay To Bangkok Compliment the user
Overall Rating

my rating would be 2.5*, more fit a case of skipping but if u dont have anything better to do u might as well catch up with it (thats what i did :-)...

when the credits of a movie names nagesh kukunoor as its director and writer, expectations are higher... perhaps this is the thing which has gone against this movie... its a regular bollywood masala movie with 3-4 subplots in it, some crude sex jokes, some okayish jokes and some thai masala... bole to, kahani main emotion hai, drama hai, comedy hai, love story hai, suspense hai, thoda sa action bhi hai... perhaps u dont want that from nagesh...  music is okayish, acting is okayish... the movie says, "same same but different" but its "shame shame no different" (shamelessly modified copy from a song in the movie :-)...

overall, missing the midas touch of nagesh and the subtle sense of humor...

Movie: My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves Compliment the user
Overall Rating

strictly avoidable movie, not the kind of start you would expect for 2008...

the movie is about a small time waiter who wants to be an actor, he works in a bar owned by a underworld don, after that you can predict the story so i need not go into details :-)...

overall very poor movie with bad storyline, predictable cliches and dialogues in the movie... acting wise the debutant is totally hopeless... here is my theory on why the movie was made...

rgv has mastered the art of launching hopeless new comers on the expenses paid by their parents... mohit ahlawat and prashant raj being two cases... e. niwas has it seems learnt this art from his mentor (and he duly acknowledges him as well in movie credits)... e. niwas did some decent work in form of shool and love ke liye kuchh bhi karega but has been a dud after that... so he decides to launch e. niwas productions (obviosly funded by dwivedi's father).... and launces his son, in what you can call the crappy start of 2008... the dude cannot act or dance or anything (and in fact does not even look like a conventional hero)... i dont know how did he manage to get amrita rao on board... the story is bad... the climax is pathetic... the only paisa vasool thing is amrita rao who looks all cute and sexy in the movie... songs are bad... there is an item song by hrishita bhatt but she definitely needs some lessons in dance...

after watching this one, i think halla bol is much better and watchable once :-)...

Movie: Halla Bol Compliment the user
Overall Rating

overall rating 2.5, more fit a case for skipping the movie... i found that movie made too many references to too many things here and there... sometimes they looked childish, sometimes out of place, sometimes stuffed forcefully in movie... i had a similar feeling watching traffic signal... the movie tries to be sincere but at best it could only try that...

the movie is about a nukkad natak actor ajay who wants to be a movie star... pankaj kapur is his guru... vidya balan plays his love interest... he gets a chance to work in movies and is bigtime hit... but this changes his outlook and character... pankaj kapur leaves him and so do his parents... vidya and his relations also go bad... then one fine day he witnesses a murder in a high profile party (jessica lal anyone?)... and that changes his life, it haunts him initially and then he decides to go all against the standard politicians and business tycoons... he loses the court case but wins it through halla-bol from aam janta and help from his guru... a generation awakens but this time by halla bol and not candle light marchs... and definitely not as good as RDB...

overall acting wise, pankaj kapur is just awesome...  the way he delivers dialogues and his portrayal of the character, he is just too good, but has too little screen space... ajay has done decent job, vidya and rest of the cast is okay... the politician (darshan jariwala) and business tycoon (some idiot) are irritating... the over the board digging of actors endorsing brands is childish... music is okayish at best... raj kumar santoshi has failed to deliver what makes a national award winner this time... too bad for him, even worse for his and ajay's fans :-)...

my take, reasonably avoidable :-)...

Movie: Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa Compliment the user
Overall Rating

those were the days when srk was not king khan, he could play a character normally in a movie (unlike today where the character plays srk aka self-proclaimed king khan)... THE best performance of srk, pure, unadulterated and very much enjoyable... songs are awesome, great performances by srk, naseer, anjan shrivastav, suchitra...

story goes like this, sunil (srk) is a happy go lucky guy who is not so good at studies, very good at music... good at heart but does not mind lying a bit here and there... and when he lies there is no stopping him... he is part of a music band and loves ana (suchitra krishnamurthy) but oops she loves chris (deepak tijori)... story moves with sunil goofing up big time but doing fine later...

overall movie is a must watch for any bollywood lover...

Movie: Jab We Met Compliment the user
Overall Rating

after watching it twice (rather late) i thought this movie deserves a review for sure... so first things first, its THE romantic comedy of 2007 and must watch from my side... and i never imagined that i would say that but i loved kareena in this movie... first movie for her which is more like her solo hit...

i guess by this time most of you have seen it so no need to tell the story again... overall exceptional characterization by the director, and carried very well by kareena, shahid, pawan malhotra, dara singh and rest of the clan... especially kareena, going by what she has done to over-enthu characters in past (remember pooh in k3g or mujhse dosti karoge) i was really not sure if she would be able to manage but director has made sure that he gets just what he needs from her.... very good music, with all kinds of numbers, a bit senti to foot tapping to much in love numbers... the story does not have a lot new to offer, you would have seen it in parts, even the lively spirit of kareena's character you have seen it before... but still the fresh treatment makes everything work... director has kept the story light and entertaining much of the time... so here is one more mushy romantic comedy from imtiaz ali after socha na tha... watch it to enjoy it!...

Movie: Return of Hanuman Compliment the user
Overall Rating

first things first, return of hanuman makes a decent watch, overall rating would be 3.5... the final product has simple aim, lets keep it entertaining by all means... so if you see a narad peeping in to see what indra and maneka are upto, its okay... u might see a rajni monkey, jai-veeru pair of monkeys, a daaku who can imitate in voices of gabbar, thakur, loin etc etc...

story goes like this, hanuman decides to take birth on earth and gets brahma to agree... after a contract he is born as maruti to a brahmin pandit family... in the village there is some mysterious place where people keep disappearing, then in his school there are some mischevous kids, then you have some imaginary extension of mythology with rahu-ketu and a curse by shukracharya (guru of asura and daanavs) and finally you have humans who are polluting earth like anything and killing nature... combine all these and you have a decent enough khichdi ready as the movie...

overall movie has okayish story, decent dialogues and situations to keep it funny and entertaining and some messages here and there for kids and humans in general... animation is fine, hanuman as young kid looks cute... i think the movie is watchable once...

Movie: Taare Zameen Par Compliment the user
Overall Rating

first things first, if you miss on TZP you are indeed missing something... its among the finest films of 2007, touches your heart, leaves you emotional, makes you cry (I think I cried 2-3 times and my throat choked at other instances :-)... exceptional performance by the kid darsheel, amply supported by aamir, tisca chopra, the guy who played darsheel's father and others... and yes the casting lists darsheel's name at the top!... music is very good, and i had not heard the "Ma" song till I saw the movie... the song is just too much with its lyrics and picturization... you could almost feel yourself crying... i could get the same feeling as with "luka chupi" from RDB... besides the movie scores in screen play/ dialogues as well, some of the scenes have amazing dialogues to match the intensity required at all fronts... watch out for the "khyaal" sequence between aamir and kid's father...

i wont go into details of the stories, i think you know it all... i would highly recommend this movie to all... its a very sensitive story about young children, although it talks about kids with dyslexia but i think the subject is very much applicable to all kids these days... its not uncommon to hear about suicides due to poor performance in studies these days... its too much pressure to perform from parents/ teachers/ peers these days... hopefully it can be our entry for oscars next year! and i want it to sweep all awards of 2007! :-)...

Movie: Welcome Compliment the user
Overall Rating

first things first, the movie is 3.5 stars worth, its another case of short skits (which are continuous at times and discontinued at other) weaved together to make a movie, chaos in between and at the end (priyadarshan ishtyle) to have some fun... though the basic story line is good enough to have a better story... so if you liked partner, dhamaal, golmaal (2006) etc etc, you might as well like this one...

the story is abt a don uday shetty (nana) who wants to get her sister (katrina) married to a nice guy and trying hard to find it... munna bhai (anil) is his right hand... on the other hand we have dr ghungroo (paresh rawal) who has a nephew (akshay) and paresh wants a match for akshay from a very neat and clean family... there is some initial match and mis-match, followed by akshay and katrina falling in love... the condition for them to get married is to make sure uday and munna leave bhaigiri... then there is big brother of both of them RDX (feroze khan)... the story moves with some fooling around and lots of fun and chaos... and has a cameo by mallika also (she looks hot and could act too!)... it has happy ending finally!

overall pretty good performances by nana, anil and feroze, they pretty much steal the show... akshay is wasted big time, he is a nice guy and does not get to display his comic skills to the fullest (man, i missed that!)... paresh is okay, katrina looks good, mallika looks hot...  the movie is a bit long so you get ample chance to laugh... music is very okayish, pops up anywhere kinds...

Movie: Khoya Khoya Chand Compliment the user
Overall Rating

first things first, i could not decide if i liked the movie and recommend it to others :-), so perhaps go watch it for yourself and decide :-)... its a story of characters and they are humans who are bound to make some mistakes... they have desires, aspirations, greed and they can lose their integrity at times... they are down at times and need help...

the movie is set in bollywood industry of 70s, perhaps trying to showcase how it used to work but i am not sure if the focus of the movie was that... to me it appeared its trying to show lives of some people and how their relation keeps changing and story evolves... soha is a upcoming actress who is trying to get into bollywood, rajat kapur is the superstar premkumar and notices her, she gets work on his recommendation but in return she has to get physical with him and she herself is pretty aware of such practices... shiney is a writer who gets to meet rajat on recommendation of vinay pathak... things take off for shiney and he also starts getting work... now rajat's marriage is fixed with dipanita and for some strange enough reasons soha is upset (though there was never love between the two)... she finds comfort with shiney... they get physical and fall in love... now when this news is out rajat tries to show his muscle but they manage to hold their ground... soha becomes a big star herself... shiney and soha plan to marry but some family issues makes soha work more and meanwhile shiney also decides to turn director... then trouble between the two starts when shiney is not able to get dates of soha for his movie... they have clashes... shiney's film goes flop and for her next film he almost asks soha to give favor to the producer... things dont work out between the two and shiney leaves... when he comes back after some time, soha has taken to drinking, doing b-grade films, is down wrt health... soha is staying with vinay pathak... shiney has a movie script which is based on his own life and soha and rajat work in that (incidentally that movie is called khoya khoya chand and the setting is in dance industry and not bollywood, kind of confirming my belief that the movie is more about humans and power than bollywood in 70s :-)...

overall the movie is largely heavy except some dialogues here and there which manage laughs... there are couple of things which i just could not get though... shiney's father had 4 wives and had rather "rangeen" personality, shiney is upset with him and when he was about to die, he asked for forgiveness, shiney did not forgive him... apparently that thing hounds him but somehow i fail to see the connection missing from rest of the story... if the message from that episode was that shiney should have said yes and told him that he loved his father, then when he returns back even then he does not express this to soha, i.e. whatever happened is gone and i still love you and want you... its soha who says that... secondly soha expecting rajat to marry her was also not clear.. there was no love... then she herself was into such situations since she was 14...

acting wise decent performances by everyone... songs are okay, title track is good...

first things first :-), movie is watchable once, the story is bit predicatble and cliche in parts but the ROI is madhuri's smile, awesome dance and the perfect expressions to match every step... good performances by the cast and good music... now over to dissection :-)...

the movie is about madhuri who is a choreograhper in Newyork and doing well... she gets a call from her home town that her dance teacher is dying, she rushes back and in the flashback we get to see a glimpse of her life 11 years back and what made her go to america... by the time she reaches des her teacher is dead but he leaves a message that she has to save the ajanta theater from getting destroyed as there are plans to build shopping mall over there... now she has to save it by showing a musical with artists from her hometown... remaining story is about how she finds cast for her musical, the rehearsal sessions and finally the musical...

movie is a bit slow to start with, initial 30-45 mins are rather okay but it catches up afterwards... all the actors have decent character to play and have done justice to it... notable are konkana, vinay, ranveer, kunal kapoor, sushmita mukherjee (kitty)... there are 2 surprises also (and they manage to steal the show as well)... and off course madhuri!... i felt that the dance teacher of madhuri had scope for improvement in his acting as well as dialogues, i could not get emotional :-)... the movie has its lighter moments which are enjoyable, music is good, the last musical show is also pretty good... overall good watch...
