Serious Cinema with a heavy dose of entertainment

Movie: Gulaal Compliment the user
Overall Rating
Perfect blend of music, story, dialogues, serious performances and humor. This movie is a sure watch for all; and for all anurag kashyap fans out there, its time to celebrate :-). Carrying out a  project like 'Gulaal' in bollywood is no doubt a very daunting task.. and, in my opinion, this movie has succeeded in all dimensions - music and lyrics were superb, the actors - the ones we know ( Kay Kay ) and the new faces (esp. Abhimanyu Rai ) have put  a superb performance all the way - the background of Rajasthan, the culture, pride, tone and sentiments of people blended so well with the story. I don't want to put down a spoiler here.. You should simply buy yourself a ticket and enjoy the real cinema - that you'll remember for a long time.

Adlabs - dull moment begins
Aug 4, 2007

Movie: Cash Compliment the user
Overall Rating

If you want a review on this movie.. every ounce of what Avinash ( author of first review) has been witnessed, and all that's true. Its a jackshit movie, like many more other.

This might not be the appropriate place but i want to point out to you guys, Adlabs is going junk. They used to bring decent cinemas to people, although they lacked the originality - Guru was a good movie overall, Bheja Fry was hilarious ( although a remake of a french movie), spiderman-3. I wow them for bringing Black Friday to screen after so much of hassles. But these guys probably want more money(which is alright) by cutting down on production quality. What came next was Aap Ka Suroor and this wholesome comedic thriller Cash. Thanks god they didn't try to make this a re-make of Blood Diamond (when i heard the movie being shot in Africa i feared this for a moment).

To add to my personal sadness, adlabs has shut down IMAX theatre in mumbai - makes me feel rather sad - i always wanted to watch a screening in IMAX but i couldn't make it so far - and now its gone.

Something about the movie - i dunno who drew those 2D animation and who built those hypernoisy background music to go along with - it was not COOL. Its the worst of all animations. I heard Adlabs are investing big in animations and they are going to release a 3D movie on Rajnikanth. If what i saw today is a prelude of what to come, i am guaranteed not to check out any of your animations stuffs.

The slogan 'Never a dull moment' no more fits with these guys - unfortunately for them and more unfortunately for us, the viewers.

Movie: Bow Barracks Forever Compliment the user
Overall Rating

Afer a long time i saw a bollywood flick and i quite enjoyed the show. I had the facilities to understand bengali ( 25% of the dialogues are in bengali) so it didn't come as surprise to find the hall halfe-empty. Story of the movie is pretty straightforward, its about the lifes of people living in a very old heritage building where several generations of anglo indian families ( nearly 140 families) lived and still living there, descendents of american and british soldiers who resided in this garrison and established there since the world war II. This movie is a story about these people, who grew up in a mixed culture, all very much indian but still holding on to their anglo cultural heritage.

Although the story is not about any serious social issues or had any message left for people, it was quite the different than usual bollywood. Lillete and Neha dubey will remind you of Monsoon wedding. Lillete dubey did a good job on this. There were familiar faces for bengali audiences, Victor banerjee (peter the cheater), MoonMoon Sen, Avijit Dutt, Sabyasachi Chakravarty. Victor banerjee, unlike his role in Jogger's Park, played a very colorful character in this movie.

Direction is quite good and the story goes on a fast track, good enough for enjoying an evening.
